I’ll share a little bit of history I have with Mischief Makers. My dad kind of came home one day with a new N64, as well as a few games. One of those games was Mischief Makers, however, it was a Japanese version of the game. This wasn’t too long into the N64’s lifetime and I was young. Anyway, I ended up playing the game, but being in Japanese, I didn’t understand a single word. I had to figure out all the mechanics by myself, not only that, I even made up my own story and gave every NPC a name. I took my time with the game, and I played levels over and over again, young me was really patient with her games, way more patient than I am nowadays, honestly. I actually didn’t even know the name of the game until I was about 15, and a friend I had at the time lent me his copy of the game to play. So I got to experience the game for the first time in my first language. Not an overly interesting story, but hey.

I can barely remember playing this back when I was 8, but I remember loving it so much, I even remember drawing the main character in class and the teacher asking me about what I was drawing. I’m having a bit of nostalgia watching and it’s so weird seeing how they actually look vs how I remember these games.

"Tonic Trouble" was created as a test for the Rayman 2 engine. The original plan was to release it late 2000, after Rayman 2 in 1999, but they released it around the same time instead, hence the lack of polish. Also: the popcorn machines in the European release are "Nestlé Crunch" chocolate bar dispensers!

Seeing Mischief Makers after so many years just brought up the most random of childhood memories. My cousin and I rented it for the weekend and we were trying to find all the gold gems. We were in a cave level and couldn't find it anywhere. My cousin randomly grabbed some NPC and shook him, making the gem fall out. But we spent so much time cheering about it that it just disappeared, which we had no idea it could do. We laughed for, like, 5 minutes straight.

Otaku Lord8 Because it's Treasure. They're not indie indie......maybe they're not that big either. Oh well.
@trevormcdermal
@trevormcdermal 5 жыл бұрын
Otaku Lord8 I thought about that, Treasure just seemed bigger when they were more active. In an interview with Jeremy Parish, Umihara's developer said they were very few when the Super Famicom game came out, small enough to be considered "indie" before the term existed. Even when the new Umihara came out for 3ds and Vita the team was still small. Treasure seemed somewhere in the middle, not Konami big but not indie small either. Unless they disbanded or something, I wish they come back with another game. I said "Oh well" because either way I want Marina back in some way too.
@Gantann
@Gantann 5 жыл бұрын
I don't know about the Umihara Kawase team's size, but Treasure has always been teeny-tiny. Sin and Punishment 2 was their largest project ever, and the core team was still only around 20 people. I recall reading Treasure employed only 30 people at most, and their old games were made with incredibly small teams of people taking on multiple roles, like typically two programmers and two designers, and a composer who may or may not also be filling one of those roles, etc. They way they stuck to their guns on doing stuff is crazy-OG indie, no doubt. As for what they're doing nowadays, it's a little complicated. Since Treasure was always such a small company, the brand name survives with its president Masato Maegawa. Even after all this time, all it would really take for Treasure to come back is for him to get some of the old crew on a new project, or even new hires. Actually, Maegawa finally commented on what's going on not too long ago, and it's basically that Treasure hasn't put anything out because, while they've gotten offers to develop games, they've all been for mobile or social games and he and the team vehemently refuse to make any of those! There are things in motion, though. Their twitter account has become active again, Ikaruga got new ports to PS4 and Switch this year, and Maegawa is teasing some kind of announcement for next year (though he said the same thing about this year before). I eagerly await what happens next.

I love that even in a video about Forgotten N64 platformers, KZfaq's algorithm just says this video is about Super Mario 64 :P The forgotten platformer that I'd love to do a video on one day is Rocket: Robot on Wheels. The folks who made that went on to make the Sly Cooper series, so it's really interesting to see their earlier projects.

Really many gaming videos on KZfaq have a wrong game at that place. For example videos that talk about NES bootleg games often makes KZfaq think that the video is about one of the Super Mario Bros. games. Or then the game is right but it is just the wrong version - for example some Spelunky HD videos have a picture of the original Spelunky.

You're not far off with saying Tonic Trouble feels unfinished, they only made the game to test how a Rayman styled engine would work in 3d. After they were able to get the consumer's opinion on the game, they were able to learn from their mistakes and refined Tonic's engine to the engine we got in the finished version of Rayman 2.

Back before I did my research before buying games I went to the nearest video game store (about an hour from where I lived and spent $8 on Mischief Makers. It was one of those games I regretted buying instantly. Funny thing is though, the more I played it the more I started liking it and it ended up being a weird favorite of mine.

Back in the day, I played Tonic Trouble on Windows, and it was a LOT different. The graphics were a whole lot better, for sure. But I suspect that the computer disc I used was a either a demo or a beta version, because the map seemed pretty limited, with apparent access to certain areas being blocked off, and there was literally nothing to do except walk around and explore the areas you could access.

Dude all three of these games were so precious to me. I got the n64 when I turned 4 and for whatever reason my kindergarten/preschool/daycare had one too so me and the other kids would bring our games from home. Chameleon was one we all obsessed with and would call "Lickitung" because reading and kindergarten aren't compatible. The other two I specifically remember renting from Hollywood Video and really enjoying as a little dude version of me. Thanks for the hefty dose of nostalgia man.

I remember reading about Tonic Trouble in Nintendo Power, renting and playing it, and just being confused and a little concerned about the whole thing. It seemed so disjointed and nonsensical, even for a "wacky" video game that it baffled me. It felt like a fever dream. So much so that even after watching you review it for this video, I'm still not entirely convinced it actually exists.

Dude. Mischief Makers is one of my all time favorite games. I played all of these and if I'd had the option for which one should receive a sequel, I'd drop kick Chameleon Twist in a second for Mischief Makers. The multiple ways in which they utilized the grab and shake mechanic were genius. (I admit that I actually really enjoyed mixing stuff in the clanpot.) I really enjoyed the randomness and variety. Favorite levels included clanball land playing on the rides and shaking kids off of them and making them cry. Clan war where you could cause a ton of chaos with a shaken missile launcher. I loved the first part of the battle with the combined Beastector mech when they're walking in from the background sounding super dramatic saying their silly catch phrases. I want to play this game again so bad.

Mischief Makers *is* really a gem here. its just a shame its somewhat forgotten coz this game sure should be on virtual console (or like of course). Its for sure worth playing but its actually pretty hard to finish this game 100% - and i mean even with every single gold gem (which i did back in the day without the internet). Its sure worth playing and finishing.

Yo! I just want to seriously say thank you for reminding me of these games! I have Tonic Trouble so I remember that one pretty well, but Mischief Makers and Chameleon Twist are both games I rented a whole bunch as a kid...but never bought. Now I really regret it. I wish I could have owned these games back then and made it easier on myself. But I really want to say thank you for reminding me of the names of these games so I can go look them up again. I always thought it was called "Making Mischief", but now I know the real name. I could not for the life of me remember the name of Chameleon Twist, but I remembered playing this game where you could eat up things with your long tongue and it wasn't that long or difficult of a game. Now I actually know what they are and I may just have to go get my hands on them again. :) And yes, we 90s people were, and still are, absolutely out of our minds. Still, I'd much rather see ambitious and creative crazy games than get some really boring drivel of games that won't stick in my mind and be remembered.

Man, Mischief Makers is such a cult classic. i remember playing it when i was a young kid and getting stuck near the half way point Olympics. when i was a teen I mad it a goal to finally go back and beat the game which after some time I did, which i felt really happy over. about a year or two later I went back in and beat the game 100% (besides getting the crazy hard S ranks in each level) getting all the gold gems and a overall rank of A to get the best ending. I was definitly very pround of myself for being able to get all of that done. even more so the nightmare of getting the gold gem from the Cerberus alpha fight. my goodness no hit on that fight is a nightmare.
