Benjamin Franklin is obviously well-known, however we don't often consider him to be a philosopher. He's contributed a lot to the political philosophy that would influence America but he also had a unique practice to cultivate a moral philosophy.
In his autobiography, Ben Franklin lists thirteen virtues that he tried to live by: temperance, silence, order resolution, frugality, industry, sincerity, justice, moderation, cleanliness, tranquility, chastity, and humility. To hone these virtues, he would record any infractions in his notebook throughout the week to keep track of his progress. He would also mainly focus on one virtue per week so he didn't get overwhelmed with all thirteen at once.
