He wrote and published newspapers, pamphlets, and almanacs, and wrote thousands of letters which were, and were intended to be, copied and shared. It is true, that he did not waste time arguing with people, in print or in person. We could all learn something from him.

"What good have I done today? " It seems that Franklin's goals are bigger than himself and he tries to do good for his fellows as well, he is not simply going through his to do list, this surely helps get him motivated day to day ...

You're projecting your modernist ideals and vocabulary onto old words from the past. Considering Ben was well known for his skills in subterfuge and didn't even treat his own wife or kids well (except for his son who ended up siding with the British), I think it's safe to say that "What good have i done today" is in reference to how productive he was rather than "How have I helped people around me". The man was an incredible thinker, inventor, diplomat, but please don't whitewash him. It's okay for great men in history to be gray, instead of morally black & white.

This is the genuine mark of ones humanity. Self examination with the expressed intent of learning what "I have done or not done," is refreshing. With that in mind, when "events and plans" go wrong, a firm rule to keep close to the human heart would be NEVER TO CAST BLAME ON ANYONE. Semper Fi

I'm a teacher and I wake up at 3 on work days because I plan my lessons when I wake up. Gotta do before I go to work for it to be fresh in my mind. I try to go to bed as early as eight or 10 the latest.

Honestly, seeing his 4 hour chunk of work feels like a really good idea for me. I tried your hour by hour approach, even putting in a lot of fudge time, but it didn't work. For me, having a long period of time of work just feels so much easier for especially difficult work.

Happiest time of my life was as a missionary. Up at 6:30, exercise for 30 min, ready and breakfast till 8:00, personal study, then planing and goal setting for the day. At 9 I was home and reviewed my day and goals set tentative goals for the next day, then I wrote in my journal, took time doing something I enjoyed and was in bed by 10:30. I had purpose and direction. I know this can’t directly apply to my life now but finding a way to adapt it I think is the key to tapping back into that direction and purpose.

I really like how you put in at the end, how Ben Franklin himself was like any other flawed human being and couldn’t always fulfill his goals, but that by keep doing so, they diminish. So many people, including myself I had been discouraged by how many times we couldn’t follow through on our goals for the day, or longer period of time; just goals in general.

We all have different sleep schedules - yes! Thanks for mentioning this. I love being awake in the middle of the night and when I tried waking up in the early morning (because so many people online were advocating it as essential to success) I didn't feel as productive and inspired because I was asleep during my favorite hours.

That dude that lived 300 yrs ago was a GENIUS. He also worked and made his own way without being lazy and did not feel entitled like so many young do today. Great video . We can still learn from a dude that lived 300 yrs ago. The world has changed but simple things don't. We need more men like Ben Franklin today. He is still just as important today as he was then. Thomas Frank I'm sorry if this was already covered, but sometimes during mid-term you can get really burned out from in-between exams/big homeworks (a lot of them stack up at that point), which makes keeping up with new material really daunting afterwards, right before the final exams roll in. Maybe you have some nice techniques to break that wall? I'd love a video on that.

The technique that work for me from a study burn out is, my own mindfulness routine I made is: 1. I splash some cold water. 2. I brew my favorite blend of coffee. 3. I find a nice place to sit quietly, set the mood lighting for that good ambience. 4. I play some nice beautiful nature sounds, like "ocean waves" or "rain sounds" and take each sip as if it's my last. 5. Once my brain is in neutral territory (calm and flat in rhythm), I go out for a quick walk for some me time i.e. the time when you are closest to your consciousness, because it's proven, when you walk or run, you talk to yourself. 6. Once I arrive at my place, I make a phone call to my parents because in this rush of life we forgot the ones of we cherish and love the most. This last routine set the tone for me that I am not just doing this for my own, several lives are dependent on it and this is how I am back in my game!

Takeaways for me: 1) setting of intention and evaluating the day. Definitely something that I will start doing right away (while I brush- morning and night) 2) separating deep and shallow work. Something I've known about for a long time but havent put into practice. I'm going to start by keeping a list of shallow work that needs to be done so that I batch them up for later.

I can vouch for the value of "clearing to neutral" at the end of the day. It was something I always did in the lab. Another tip is to make a list at the beginning of the day of everything that you have to do - big and small and both for that day and in the future. Then you can prioritise the items, and it is so satisfying when you can cross off each item. Each morning I transfer the leftovers on the list from the day before to the next days list. This way you get to remember everything you need to do and how urgent it is and when you should really get a move on with that item that's been on your list for three weeks now!

What about inconvenients that could happen during the day? For example, you do mind for other things/events that affect your performance on your studies, so thus the concentration and your focus are lost due to these causes. What does Ben Franklin would do? However, great video Frank, I'm following you from Italy, Rome. I've started to watch some of your videos recently and in order to improve my performances in university, I've started to follow some of your tips!

That's very interesting. Unless I have a specific task I need to get done at a short period of time, I prefer to be spontaneous. When I have a strict schedule I feel caged... I do have a morning routine and I make time for important tasks, but If I don't like to make a daily schedule if I don't have to. Of course it is great for students etc. but I guess everyone has their own methods :)

I feel the same way. I make a to-do list in the morning, but allow myself to complete it anytime during the day. I'm a night owl, so around 8 pm I'll get a burst of energy and burn through most of the remaining undone tasks.

Briilliant! Franklin is worth imitating. Your analysis was super helpful. As a student of history, I've learned that guys like this managed to be incredibly successful despite incredibly difficult circumstances. My "modern day hassles" seem pretty insignificant compared to the ones Franklin and his counterparts faced. So no room for excuses (though I make them). Great job.

I really love all things Ben. The crazy part that is missing, for those who don't see the obvious....children. This entire video is extremely well produced and it is well timed with a very enjoyable pace, graphics, history, humor and it is free for us to view. Thank You Thomas. At 50, and a very hands on dad still, every day is filled with matters of the kids, and the onslaught of question/answers laundry, LOVE, and the all consuming...what to feed them. And of course work. Where there is a will there is a way, but the necessary human reproduction part of life rips half a page of the days schedule from the most determined (founding) father!

Nice vid, Thanks! One point: The Great Thinkers: DaVinci, Tesla, Edison, Einstein, Newton, Socrates developed the ability to have intense concentration for many hours without a break and get along on very little sleep. It was said that people would find Socrates 'frozen' in mid stride for hours, later he said that an idea had 'taken him'. These thinkers may have been socially inept but they produced huge volumes of work. How would you develop that ability? Thank You.

good point, but did you need to make a broad generalization of these great men by calling them socially inept, which most of them most surely were not? on the contrary, Franklin is known to have cultivated a great social intelligence, Socrates spend his days, in deep contemplation yes, but in social interactions with a plethora of different people on a daily basis, and Da Vinci was said to be a very charismatic man. Careful with the generalizations ;)

Third, Autism is now classified as a “spectrum disorder” because there are BOTH, very high-functioning (well beyond neurotypical), very low-functioning (requiring help in their everyday routine), and everything else in between. There are certain traits that will always overlap, but anyone on the autism spectrum could be anywhere on it. It’s not even a straight line, rather it could be much better understood in the context of a 2D-grid to assess severity along with individual symptoms. Fourth, I am CERTAIN that many of these great men 100% DO meet the current diagnostic criteria for a high-functioning autism diagnosis (autism runs in my family, and I’m professionally trained to spot it to help in difficult situations), and just perhaps, they would not have been so great if they weren’t! I view autism as a ‘secret sauce’ that is just part of the ‘recipe’ for a plethora of great people :) Fifth, most adults and adolescents that have a diagnosis of being on the autism spectrum (and to some, the following may shock you; and to others like myself, I totally ‘get it’) according to one very reputable study is that when asked if they could get a “do over” and restart life sans autism, the overwhelming majority of about 80% said that they are VERY HAPPY just the way they are, and would NOT change a thing. I heard this tidbit at a professional lecture, presented at the state Dept. of Health by a qualified presenter who not only has 30-years of totally relevant professional experience, but is also raising a 15-year-old son that’s on the autism spectrum. Sixth, Albert Einstein had what was until recently called Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of autism, and yes, I too would definitely include him in the group of great men that was previously mentioned. I’ve always been fascinated by Einstein, and have a great respect for the late scientist :) Seventh, and this one is a BIGGIE, “social ineptness”, including one of its most literal translations of clumsiness, is a MAJOR INDICATOR, and PRIMARY DIAGNOSTIC TOOL used to see if a person is on the autism spectrum, however many of these qualities are often misunderstood as it is very difficult to explain all of the many facets that one with autism has to deal with on a day-to-day basis. Autism aside, I don’t think that anyone would be commenting if any of the above people were more simply referred to as “introverts.” Eighth, as there is no ‘cure’ for autism, different types of therapies could help someone diagnosed live a very rewarding life. Most interestingly, usually by age 25, though sometimes older, high-functioning autistic people tend to “learn” social cues to better “fit in” as that is a desire they almost universaly share, like any other human being. Literally, learning to make eye contact, or at least make it appear believable; participating in conversations and knowing when it is the correct time to speak; etc. So, some very well-educated people including the ones mentioned in this thread would absolutely have developed these “counter-traits” to better fit in, but being very much autistic as it’s life-long, you will absolutely notice small (or sometimes particularly large) oddities that could be a ‘dead giveaway.’ Ninth, those with high-functioning autism tend to be VERY SMART, and their IQs are much higher than their so-called neurotypical peers. That said, you can highly expect to see autistic people working in certain fields. Currently technology encompasses 3 autistic employees out of every 10 in one sample group. Art-based jobs also have much-higher populations of autistic employees. Finally, doctors, especially veterinarians, are also a very popular career choice for our friends in the autistic community. They key to remember, is that they like a rigid schedule, and hate change, this matches with Ben Franklins attributes as well, and almost every other giant on the list! Generally, when someone with autism is blamed for “acting out,” it is almost always panic secondary to a trigger caused by external stimuli. Their actions are misconstrued, when all they are really doing is comforting themselves in ways that most people simply will just not understand. You will also see a level of intense focus with autism, but ONLY regarding subjects that someone with autism is genuinely interested in. If they don’t enjoy it, they will move on to something else very fast! Tenth, and probably my final piece of information that I wish to share around this is that there is an ever growing list of medical comorbidities that are attached the the autistic population! The current working theory is genetics, though we have many years to go as there is not currently a genetic test for autism, even at the level of clinical trials. Like autism itself, many of these other comorbidities relies on long-checklists administered by specialty care providers as they too have no genetic test in the works. Genetic testing is still in the “infant-years,” and though a breakthrough, it is still very much an emerging science. So, yes, there is very strong medical and research-based evidence that says when somebody has a group of signs or symptoms, that even a layperson with enough knowledge could arrive at a differential diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. Finally, my point is this, the original points were good, and it’s clear that they were based off of at least some semblance of the knowledge that I had just discussed. The writer probably didn’t have the time to put as much detail in as I did with my reply. I see inconsistencies on BOTH sides, it’s not good or bad as long as we are all willing to learn more about autism each day. Just remember that people on the spectrum HATE disagreement, it’s a trigger for many of them, so we all must be careful what we type even on social media. Social considerations are one of the strongest factors going into this contemporary diagnosis, but as I mentioned, either through self-training, or professional counseling, those traits can be learned to be controlled. Once a high functioning autistic individual breaks these barriers, life starts to become much easier for them, and so to regarding their personal and professional lives. They always had the IQ to get there, they just needed to elevate their EQ enough to support the successful, but rigid lifestyle that they dream about. They want what everybody else wants. I would also kindly ask if you could go back over the list taking my 10-points from above, and see how many of these great men now meet the criteria. One last thing, on a personal level, I am BOTH very distantly related to Ben Franklin (and Yes! I have the genetics to prove it, it’s actually quite surreal to think about :) and a family history of autism, along with a great many other rare disorders that could either be genetic, rheumatological, or whatever the next best answer will eventually be! I sincerely hope that this was informative, and helps at least one person. More would be great, but if one person reads it, I will feel like I did something positive myself today! ~ Jay ✌️💙

I have a problem though, in my work I'm ask to have a rotational schedule due business needs. I could work any time between 7 am to 1:00 am and this changes every month. Is there a kind of dynamical scheduling that helps you keep and build routines. I found that I lost the habit I had to run everyday at 7 am when my scheduled changed. I've been trying to rebuild it but it is like starting over, hard and will power consuming.

When you've got a work schedule that changes, you have to be extra diligent about planning everything that's going to happen around it. I had a changing work schedule during my freshman year of college; my schedule would be different pretty much every week, so I'd always shift things around in Google Calendar the moment I knew my hours. That way, even if breakfast or gym time changed, I was pre-committed to doing it.

Javier Vazquez I follow a generally untimed schedule. If you notice that he sometimes leaves large areas of time with several unique activities, you can use this tactic as well. I don't run every day at 7:00, personally. Instead, I run every day, usually in the PM, when it feels right to do so. I read 10 pages of a book in the morning, and play mind games with breakfast, but sometimes I run out of time, and so I read about five to seven pages and leave the rest for night, and sometimes I leave the games for night as well, which has my scores lacking. But it probably varies quite a lot from person to person, and you may need a tighter schedule than I.

Interesting look at Franklin. I would strongly recommend that all Americans read his autobiography soon. He wrote it in easygoing conversational style (i.e. not like the Constitution). You’ll discover just how interesting people were and just how much you can learn about living life fully. You’ll also overcome the mistaken notion (cough cough) that 300 years in time somehow makes a difference to a person’s essential character and cleverness. Franklin was a genius in any age.

it's 9:30 pm and i were planning to hit the bed since i have been trying to come back into regular sleeping time since summer started, but now I'm going to write about what good i did today. As a teenager who's spending her time indoors and has nothing else to do, i find that question really hard to answer. So after watching this, i am going to start reading more and learning a new subject (German) from tomorrow. but then again i say these stuff and never actually fulfill my own goal. what can i do if i don't meet my goal? what should i do?

I am soo messy like hell messy but when it comes to my study notes I organise them as neat as possible like straight lines as straight as it could be, I end up not studying ☺☺ p r o c r a s t i n a t i o n // and then bad grades, regrets, gaining motivation from failing; lasts for a very short time. in the end I don't give up though. in third year, I'll reply to myself in the end and see how far I changed, I don't want to post this I'm ashamed of myself but I hope I'll be proud of myself one day ☺

Excellent video content, presentation, and delivery. Great communication style, articulation, and insights. My current daily schedule, which I started January 1, 2018, is similarly structured, but I'm finding it difficult to maintain my main work sessions, and often diverted myself out of my schedule. Needless to say, often I didn't get much done. I think because I didn't set my intention first when I wake up, and am easily distracted. I promised myself to set my intention beginning tomorrow morning (8/06/18). Thank you for sharing your research with me and for helping me develop new routines and habits. Thank you for your insights and suggestions, and for the BF quote. I think you'll make a great Life Coach! In gratitude.

Yes thomas do one on TESLA, he work 22 out of 24 hrs a day, he was the only person to do this and he also worked for 83 straight hrs at work once. Wondering what he did and how he did it and how he managed to stay productive in just two hrs of sleep

Thomas, would you please make a video about how to acquire the will to do, the energy to act, when you are struck with lassitude and almost paralyzed (psychically speaking), as a result, fail to accomplish what you want to do, what you need to do for success. I have read that people who have their money handed to them without having to work for it will lack the drive to succeed, to work, and I fear that is my case. I am a wife of a man who makes enough money that I don't need to do hardly a thing for myself, and this is completely debilitating me. In addition, I suffer from envy of others, of their freshness, their vitality, their accomplishments and their character, and I fear that it is killing my spirit. I am putting on a front to the world, and am getting away with it, but this cannot go on forever. I must change or it is the end of me, I am going down a tunnel and how do I climb out? Does one just pull oneself up by one's own bootstraps? I don't know if you can even relate, because I think you have disciplined yourself so well that you have never fallen this low. Or is it a temperament I am born with, that I am powerless to change?

I would suggest 2 things to start. One would be to volunteer (start just a couple days per week) at a local charity, like a food bank, or place where meals are served etc and then another day or 2 at a completely different place, like an animal shelter. Even if it’s just during their crunch time (like a couple hours at dinner time). It will let you see the other side of the life and you will slowly get rid of that feeling of ennui, and be really more satisfied and grateful for your good fortune. Then I suggest learning at least 2 new things, different from each other, like a language and a musical instrument or singing, art or creative writing, etc., so you can exercise all parts of your brain and constantly expose it to new challenges. And, not enough can be said for quality exercise. (And I don’t mean that silly “just walk” mentality. I mean really challenge your body!) Like weight training or crossfit or something that will kick your butt! No sissy stuff that requires spending $$ on designer work-out gear or girly dance classes or spinning mindlessly on a bike indoors, but a real challenging sport that works out all your muscles. I would love to have time to do all of those things, but I have my own challenges with growing my small business and I have several rescue animals. I don’t have a minute to spare now, but in the past I’ve done volunteer work and it’s very rewarding (even if you come from a poor background, like I did). Just make sure the volunteer work you do is “in the trenches”. Get your hands dirty, so to speak, not “work” as merely a figure-head who answers phones during a telethon or throws a party for a fund-raiser. Just Do It! And good luck! “Full steam ahead!
