The more fuxking lore I learn about The Forgotten Realm the more I realize how bad it is honestly. Most of this shit is like they just went with their guts... "okay we need dinosaur so Chute... be cool if we had this, so just make up some bull to connect it even if we poorly explain and barebone" Comparing this to the more coherent Warhammer lore, Forgotten Realm is very bad and at its best, And NO WONDER, most people just focus on Faerun since every other lore outside of the Faerun there is just an absolute cluster fuck.

I like to think that hobgoblins are just good breeders in general. Like, if hobgoblins were less militaristic and more agrarian, they'd probably end up having the biggest cattle and the fluffiest sheep.

Enjoying the videos. One thing of note though: Dragonborn are older than 4e. While it is true that they became their own race and the whole nation transplant thing is from 4e, that was a complete re-write of their lore. in 3rd edition of dnd (and maybe older, but not sure about that) you were not born a dragonborn. Dragonborn were emissaries of Bahamut to the mortal planes. If a mortal served Bahamut well, they could undergo the rite of rebirth and be reborn as a dragonborn, forsaking your original race and previous life. One gained the long life of a dragon but also became sterile; all dragonborn were thus champions of bahamut, as each had to be individually created by him. Their counterpart were the hordes of Spawn of tiamat which were some of my favourite monsters in 3rd edition. classic few but elite good vs horde of evil trope sort of stuff.

What you're talking about there is actually a completely different race called the "Dragonborn of Bahamut", and they're not related at all to the dragonborn from Abeir.

Jim Cullen to my understanding dragonborn of bahamut were tge dragonborn until 4th edition, when abeir was introduced and dragonborn were made their own race, originating from said world.

As far as I know, they recycled the name and general concept in 4e. archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/iw/20060105b Also worth mentioning are the draconian from Dragonlance which are also modified humans...

@andrewlevin6331 2 жыл бұрын
You could also explain that away by saying something like: there were the Dragonborn that Bahamut made but when the dragonborn came in 4e people just called them Dragonborn because they looked like the Bahamut ones. After all, Dragonborn in FR don’t really call themselves Dragonborn, to my knowledge, they call themselves Vayemniri.

The two names, Asgorath and Io, are probably a question of different places uses different names. A quick look at the FR wiki says "Io" is a name common to the Outer Planes. In other points, Bahamut is known by more than two names, besides Bahamut, there is Xymor, Marduk, and Paladine of Krynn (Dragonlance) is likely an aspect of Bahamut.

It's surprising how similar a lot of this is to other properties (Warcraft, Warhammer, etc.). I have a theory that if you went back to the inception of all these derivative fantasy worlds that were created in the wake of Tolkien, before they diverged/were differentiated over time, they're similar enough they could almost be wrangled into one singular ur-fantasy setting.

Pre4e type Tieflings don't have a known origin, but the Infernal Tieflings certainly do, they were created by a specific ritual by the Brimstone Angel, who tied the preexisting Tieflings to Asmodeus, and this Tiefling race breeds true unlike old school Tieflings so they spread far faster then they did.

Crystal spheres and the Phlogiston are all on the Material Plane. Mortal clerics, who travel into the Phlogiston are unable to contact deities, as it is cut off from all other planes. The gods of the Mulhorandi Pantheon were unable to get to Toril directly, so they travelled through the Phlogiston on a Spelljamming ship, to "get in the back door".

This seems to be the most accurate rendition of Tieflings from the forgotten realms wiki In 1358 DR, a warlock coven known as the Toril thirteen performed a ritual that cursed most tiefling lineages-those of demons, devils, hags, and rakshasas, among others-with the "blood of Asmodeus", changing their original lineage with that of the archdevil himself. This was done to make Asmodeus a "racial god", ensuring him enough followers to attain godly powers. - Erin M. Evans (October 4th, 2016). The Devil You Know. (Wizards of the Coast), pp. 262-264. On the subject of dragonborn there was a template for them in 3.5 but they were very different from the 4e and 5e. You went through a ritual of rebirth and lost your original racial abilities and bonuses after they hatch from an egg. These dragonborn were devoted to Bahamut and his cause and we're viewed by the god himself as his children.

I like to think it's pronounced closer to "Toy"fling because it resembles the German word for devil - Teufel. I think this could be where inspiration for Tieflings came from. I heard from a friend that their ancestors were once humans who somehow made a pact with a demon. This pact also resulted in a curse that affected their appearance, causing them to look like devils. However they were created, Tieflings are pretty cool IMO. They're my favourite D&D race and I'm always hoping to learn more about them.

It comes from the Old English dweorgas, later dwarrow, and in Modern English dwarf. So it's basically and old-timey name for dwarves. (Dwarves/elves is the preferred plural by Tolkien instead of dwarfs/elfs, so it stuck in D&D) I'm no linguistic, but it stands to reason duergar would be pronounced more similar to the dwar- in dwarves, and not doour-gar
@khulgarulfsson8067

I usually pronounce it dvaergar. With an “eh” sound for the vowel in the first syllable as in “meh” or “let” sound and a hard v sound and g sound. In my native language the word for dwarf is dværg. Duergar looks a lot like putting a Swedish ar plural ending on an English phonetic spelling of dværg. 🤷‍♂️

Didn't humans come from Earth, back when Earth and Toril were connected by some link? So you could pass between Toril and Earth, which is why the cultures on Toril mimic that of Earth (Faerun mimics Europe and is inspired by European cultures, Kara-Tur mimics Asia and has many Asian cultures, mainly Japanese, etc.) Then the tie between the worlds were severed, leaving humans on Toril, thus making Toril a *Forgotten Realm* to Earth and Earth a forgotten realm to Toril, and thats also why we have mythologies, the mythological beasts and creatures were from Toril.

Well, that has always been the hint; that the slaves brought over to Toril by the Imaskari came from the early nations of another "sphere" and had the gods of the Egyptian and Sumerian /Akkadian Pantheons. So basically bronze-age Mesopotamia and Egypt. The Mulan became a general term for the ethnic group that comprised the Untherites (mesopotamians) and the Mulhorandi (egyptians). Most likely because the Molhorandi were said to have been more numerous and their pantheon came out more unscathed from the conflict with the imaskari. So yeah, the Mulan are essentially descendants of terran humans, or extremely heavily hinted out to be.

When I revamp the universe, we will have Goblins, Orcs, Gnomes, Elves, Drows, Dwarfs, Trolls and various others with enough variation to reflect not just Forgotten Realms but also Warcraft and Elder Scrolls. The origin of these races are different. All of the humanoid races are related to humans are descended from the same ancestors prior to humans millions of years ago. Not all elves are related to each other in the same sense that all elves have the same elf progenitors. The Mer Elves are much closer related to humans while the Tel Elves are distantly related but still hominids, while the Dorei Elves of Warcraft are somewhere in the middle but are much closer related to the same Trolls found in the same medium.

But I think the feywild (or AD&D Realm of Faerie) wasn't a terribly safe place either. Later in -25400 DR the Gold elves came to Toril fleeing the destruction of their kingdom Tintageer. It was magically being flooded and only about 50 elves made it through a portal to start a new life on Toril. forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Tintageer

So did the Dwarves decimate the Giants or did they destroy more than 1/10th of the population? Just being a troll, but words have meaning dammit!

Alex Porter I would say destroying more 9/10th of the population would be decimation but not 1/10. That would just be really bad and unfortunate.

The idea that Yondalla/Chauntea bred Halflings out of humans sounds a lot like what is said about Hobbits in Tolkien - that they are likely a sub-class of Men. If you know anything about D&D Halflings, you may be aware that way back in the very first version of D&D, they used to be "Hobbits", but Tolkien challenged that and forced D&D to change the name as "Hobbit" is copyrighted. But then Tolkien is the grandfather of D&D, as the most basic races can be seen as equivalents of LotR races.

A couple notes. (1) Tieflings descend from a devil, most commonly Asmodeus. I suppose it's theoretically possible to establish a humanoid line from demons, but this is extremely unlikely because of the extreme chaotic evil nature of demons. They just kill and destroy without purpose and don't really procreate sexually, although I bet they have the capacity to do so. (2) Asgorath and Io are considered different aspects of the same deity. It is not uncommon for real-world deities to have multiple names as well, such as Pallas Athena. Gods also commonly have nicknames like Odin the One-eyed Wanderer.

I'm not sure about the Dragonborn being created by Bahamut bit, I seem to recall reading that there are a few myths behind how they are created (the reasons why vary) and the only piece that lines up between all of them is that they are created by (or from) Io, before (or during) the split. This seems small but it's key because it explains why their colours are not representative of their moral alignment in the way they are for chromatic/metallic dragon lineages. I think the the Goblinoids creation being obscure might be somewhat purposeful, due to both the pantheons of Hobgoblins and Goblins being almost wiped out completely by Maglubiyet "so long ago they do not remember the names of the fallen [gods]". I doubt any of their creator deities were left standing and they certainly lost much of their history. Though I think it's fair to say that Goblins likely came from Hobgoblin selective breeding, Bugbears similarly might represent a more basal form of the Goblinoids but there is nothing but conjecture to go on. Interesting listen btw. If I could suggest without offending, a little bit of (light/quiet) background music under your voice could make these videos a little smoother to listen to (just my opinion though, I tend to listen minimised while browsing and just tab in if the speaker is talking about an image specifically, so I miss any visual ques that smooth transitions.)

Fair enough, there are a fair few things by Kevin Macleod (incompetech.com/wordpress/) Things like the "Gregorian Chant" he has, or some of his lute or fantasy pieces can make for a calm backdrop depending on what kind of atmosphere you're trying to set. It's worth taking a look at if you haven't already. =)

I am loving these videos because I just got in DnD myself, but one thing I’d like to note, from something I’ve read, is that your right about tieflings being plane-touched, but if your grandpa is a full demon, that means you’re not a tiefling. They are humans who long ago were given power by demons and devils. The horns and other features were given rather than inherited. Half fiends are different. I could definitely be wrong but I wanted to share that.
