Shooting the MP35: Germany's Left-Handed SMG

The MP-35 is one of several very nicely made inter-war German submachine guns. Unlike most, it has the magazine mounted on the right, and ejects out the left - a configuration chosen to standardize the manual of arms with the K98k style bolt handle. The MP-35 is also unusual in having a progressive type of trigger - although it's not really a normal progressive trigger even. Instead, it is a normal sort of trigger for semiautomatic fire, and a second lever below the trigger which must be pulled for full auto fire. I suspect this will take a bit of getting used to...

Armies were reluctant to adopt SMGs so one selling point was to make them as rifle like as possible. SIG MKMS was designed with a magazine that could be folded into the stock and which made it very rifle like in appearance. There even was a SMG that used Kar98k stock.

I like to beat dead horses a little bit, but consider for a moment how during the inter-war years, heavy (for caliber) well made smgs were crafted... Then you have the M1, M2 Carbine, the PPsH, and StG44 using intermediate cartridges. Nowadays, after much pendulum swinging, you have a "new" resurgence in PCCs... It is ALMOST as though the human body is really, really fond of shooting a firearm heavy enough to dampen recoil in caliber small enough to make that low recoil impulse be translated into greater accuracy, while utilizing the best technology available. Comparatively speaking, it seems the recent trend towards PCCs is just the wheel coming round full circle. Hence my love for the PS90 platform. Almost as good as everyone's favorite something something, way better than other somethings, with greater capacity and less recoil than either, in a smaller overall package. Hmmm... The thing about overall utility is that it keeps rearing its relevant little head. YMMV

Out of ammo with a flinch. I developed this technique to combat flinch, and admittedly, it works better with semi-auto but try it anyway. Before shooting do a dry fire exercise for about 10 minutes and say to yourself (or out loud) "It's going to go click" each time you pull the trigger. It worked very well well with the thousands of troops that I trained.

Idk why but I've always had this sense that this is the least prestigious of the high-end, interwar German machine guns. I think it's the gimmicky 'bolt-action' charging handle and perhaps the 'sort of' progressive trigger that seems really awkward. Overall, it seems like this is a good SMG, as everyone says it shoots well, feels smooth and stays on target. I would have to compare it to guns like the MP28, MP34 and ERMA EMP to really get a handle on where it stands overall. The general layout reminds me a bit of the PPD40 AND KP31, which are also well-functioning guns but they don't really have the same prestige an MP34 does. I am warming up to this gun tho and would like one in my collection some day.

The MP-35 really is emblematic of the weird shenanigans German gun designers got into in the late 19th into the mid 20th century. Granted, it's also a testament to the ridiculous reticence with which militaries of the time were dragged into accepting submachine guns into their doctrines. There was the perfectly serviceable MP-34 already ready and available, but instead they want a bolt action on an open bolt SMG, because dear lord the soldiers would never figure out how to pull a charging handle in a straight line! They must have a bolt to ameliorate the confusion! At least they never tried to put a magazine cutoff on it, I suppose.
