Today we are taking the ZX-7 (essentially a Sterling SMG in .45 ACP) out to the range. It runs rather faster than I initially expected, but isn't too hard to handle...

Carried and used a Sterling for may years in the army and that is hands down the best explanation of that sudden barrel drop that happens when you have a stoppage or run dry. Also kudos for firing as a lefty as that puts your face pretty close to the ejection port and that always gave me a bit of anxiety.

Quite so - and as a righty I never found the 9mm mag felt like it was there, it was nicely in place just over my left arm. It's also interesting that I found the folding stock very useable and comfortable, and Ian hasn't criticised it in this vid, so another nice feature of this weapon.

@@Simon_Nonymous I've only used one during one exercise and while I found the weapon easy to use and pretty lightweight I didn't like the way the magazine stuck out at 90 degrees to the grip and but stock. It made it more likely to get tangled up in things like tents or camouflage net. But other than that I was a bit surprised the magazine didn't get more in the way. On the other hand you could get down really low on the ground with it which is a point in it's favor.

That's one of the things I miss from the videos. Sure, sometimes it's just firing in the dirt but at least we can see the impacts (it was shown sometimes or a steel target). A piece of cardboard should be doable and I think everyone is pleased with Ian's shooting. It might be even too good to see how a soldier would fare with not much time behind it. I'm glad there are videos by Bloke on the Range to see the effective range but it's not full auto fire since it would require paperwork in Switzerland which is costly and annoying. For the older rifles the British Muzzleloaders channel did an outstanding job coming up with a course to compare rifles and to see how good he'd fare under the qualification standards of the time.

The Sterling SMG was my personal weapon for 20 odd years and we had to qualify once a year. I found tucking the butt under the side of the shoulder strap of the 58 webbing gave me better control when firing from the standing or kneeling positions. Which leads me to wonder why Ian and others do not wear webbing when firing military weapons.

It seems that some sub machine guns hit some kind of sweet spot where the cyclic rate, recoil impulse, and ergonomics just come together and work. They would be sort of cool, except open bolt is not going to make it very accurate, and civilians have an obsession with match grade on everything down to even a BB gun (I'll be honest, I now hate smooth bore BB guns when I know you can take the heads off those little green army men figures from 20ft with a barely more expensive rifled barrel BB). Also I believe it would still be an SBR unless you want a ridiculously long barrel (which results in slower fps unless you're getting specific ammo loads for it). If those laws didn't exist, well then you could even have a fully accurate reproduction.

As a Brit who's dad used to use the Sterling whislt in the Army this was back in the 70s. I was always fond of the Sterling even though many or my dads colleagues said it couldn't hit barn door with its range. The purpose of the Sterling was secondary support to the SLR L1A1 ( inch pattern FAL). Used by tank crews, drivers etc as it was a compact weapon ideal for these roles. Also during the 70s it was used by the Imperial storm troopers who upgraded to a blaster.

My experience with the airsoft one as well. You rest the magazine on the support arm, as well as your support arm grip alone counteracts the weird weight distribution somewhat. If I imagine the magazine being on the right hand side the handling would bother me a little too, not to mention what the magazine would catch on if you'd move through foliage or indoors. What irked me was the long length of pull, if you're short the weight is going to be "out there" like a Thompson.

The beautiful thing about this weapon is that it can be hidden due to its small size and different design in general appearance. It is also very suitable for those who use the left side while shooting. Some modifications can be made to it, such as making a variable-length rear support. There is a cylindrical magazine for it and a silencer can be attached to it. There is a type that can fire small missiles used by special forces. Yes, it is a tactical weapon despite its old design.

Observing the slo-mo with burning powder being ejected from the firearm, the high fire rate and your statement regarding ’pre-emptive’ anticipation of recoil, my take is the firearm needs a significantly heavier bolt, with maybe also a greater spring weight. The best solution would really be a mechanism to delay blow-back, but that would overly complicate the firearm.

The felt recoil, the ergonomics, the muzzle climb is all well and good, but which ones can keep burst fire within a foot at 25 yards, 2 feet, 3 feet, etc? I know Ian is very experienced but we never ever, loaded a mag with an open bolt. Only ever from a closed bolt and only cocked the weapon when engaging the target. The Sterling was my personal weapon for 15 years.

The Aussies came up with a 9mm SMG called F1 to replace their Owens, and it had the pistol grip from the L1A1 battle rifles they used at the time. Interesting aspect of the F1 is that the magazine was inserted on top of the breech and not to the side like Sterling. Made for better feeding and better accuracy as the weight of the mag helped keep the barrel down, but the front and rear sight had to be offset from the centre as the vertical mag was in the way. It even had a bayonet mount for the L1A1 bayonet. Crazy.

At 4:52 Anyone else catch where He says the gun is a "ZX-5 " ,although it is corrected with "again, ZX-7" on the video with text? Well shot and controlled, especially for being shot left handed with the ejection port so close to the face, yet even Ian's eye doesn't flinch.

I spent a couple of years in a Canadian Army reserve armoured reconnaissance unit. Our primary-issue weapon was a Canadian-made version of the Sterling submachine gun. It was designated SMG C1, or Submachine Gun, Canadian Issue 1. Cosmetically, there were a few small differences between the Sterling and the SMG C1, the most noticeable one being the fact that there was a muzzle protrusion on the Sterling, while the C1 didn't have it. Even though the Canadian and British SMG's both mounted the same bayonet that was also used on the British L1A1 SLR and the Canadian FN C1A1 rifles, the bayonet mounts were arranged differently. The parkerizing on the body of the SMG C1 was also smoother and a bit lighter in colour. One of the great tragedies of my short time in the army reserves was that I never got a chance to fire the SMG C1 with either live rounds or blanks, while I'd fired the FN C1A1 quite a few times.

I wonder how much less you'd notice the extra weight of the magazine if you shot it right-handed instead of left-handed. Right-handed, the extra weight would be more towards the shooter's centerline; left-handed, it's hanging away from the shooter.

Having visited Bob Imels PAWS shop in Salem, Oregon in the past, he still had some ZX-7s for sale all the way until about 2003ish or so that were transferable. Interesting shop who did gunsmithing works of art still. Last I saw him, he had some odd contraption G-3 receiver that took FAL mags. I think his explanation was a bit of a doom and gloom in saying that G-3 mags back in 2001 to 2003 were hard to find and expensive while FAL mags are everywhere. Anyways, interesting guy and shop.

Mattorama , the Sten gun was designed to be something that very marginally trained women war workers could make in a couple of hours. The Sterling very much reflects that ancestry.

I imagine that tilting it that way would make it awkward to manipulate the mag release since that would be on the outside of the gun close to the reciever.

When I first was taught to use a rifle, our instructor, who was an old soldier, asked if any of us were left handed. I think one chap put his hand up, we were then told that we were all right handed, and that was that! It was only much later, when some of us started to get slightly proficient that he got us to check for 'predominant eye' and all that sort of thing, and some people then started shooting 'left handed'. Our instructor had lost his right hand, and so he always fired left handed, which meant that for a lot of weapons, one of us had to load for him. His 'metal' hand had a moveable thumb, and he would crack it open, drop a rifle in it and then close it, and bash his (metal) right elbow into the firing point, we thought that was the same as using a bipod, but we were never going to argue with him!

@@Janduin45 looking at the video, it seems so: Sterling button is like Sturmgewert-44, grab the magazine with left hand and push the release with the thumb. Done on the other way, the right hand had to reach for the "outside" then contort back to find the mag release, no matter how the mag well points.

heard a story way back from ex squaddies ... the MOD bought ammunition from india in I think the 70's. The indians had skimped on the powder in the round so badly that the 9mm rounds from a sterling would barely fly 30 feet. they called the sterling smg, the small metal gun.

Man we're all spoiled with these mag dumps. It really is the blessing and curse of this fanbase. We want mag dumps. If it's a pleasant gun to shoot, it's a whole lot of fun. But hell, it could be a .50 cal machine gun, shoulder fired, and all the fanbase wants is MAG DUMP. And poor Ian might just be crazy enough to destroy his shoulder for us if that were the case. Props to this man for treating his audience so well. He knows what we're all waiting for.
