Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.forgottenweapons.com
Today we are taking an original Sten MkII(S) out to the range - something I am excited to be able to do! The suppressor on this Sten is all original, and about 80 years old...and I'm very curious to see how effective it really is.

Someone once wrote to Ian Fleming about the "unrealistic" portrayal of suppressed firearms in the James Bond books. Fleming responded by writing that he had seen one of these Sten guns firing and it made "barely a whisper." I always thought that was an exaggeration but it apparently it wasn't.

In the first video he states that the rifling has been almost shot out, and that the suppressor is extremely dirty due to poor maintenance. So it’s fair to say that the gun does indeed have at least a high round count and probably has been subject to lots of full auto fire. Sten barrels aren’t hard to come by though, so whoever buys it can get a replacement and modify it by shortening and ventilating if they want.
@alganhar1

@@warrenb8228 Damned near shot out rifling does not a low round count make. Also in the take down you could see how dirty the inside of the suppressor was. I'm wondering if at some point in the eighty-odd years since this gun was built, someone decided to ignore the instructions and do a few full-auto mag dumps through this. @@randomidiot8142 But that would damage it's value. Re-coring any suppressor of that historical significance isn't worth it. That would be like refinishing a original Colt 1911 or single action from early 1900s
@randomidiot8142
@randomidiot8142 2 жыл бұрын
@@DB-yj3qc looking at it's modular design, are you sure about that? A new barrel assembly would just spin right on. If it was a little less rare and more of a shooter that would be an easy way to get range time fun without wearing original fragile parts. Plus it takes original sten springs and bolts, so you could keep the originals aside and put miles on new ones.
@alganhar1
@alganhar1 2 жыл бұрын
@@randomidiot8142 Yeah, but you would still keep the original barrel and suppressor even if you had a new barrel/suppressor unit installed for shooting because the fact they are ORIGINAL is going to count for a fairly major part of the value of that firearm. You replace the core and you wipe out a significant portion of the guns value, if not most of it. STEN MK II's are two a penny, as you stated, Sten Mk II(S) however are *rare*, and its that original suppressor that makes it rare.

@@JohnDoe-pv2iu IIRC The Mk II(S) units that actually were capable for fully automatic fire were generally issued with advice to only use single shots or short bursts in dire emergencies to prolong the life of the suppressor baffles. The very short vented barrel intended to produce only subsonic velocities with supersonic load cartridges probably makes a big difference as the powder gases themselves are likely a lot slower than those from a MAC 11's barrel and that serves to reduce the portion of the muzzle report that the gases themselves are responsible for.

Holy crap they let you shoot this thing? Given how fragile the silencers are I'm surprised. ROFL! I just knew there would be some variant on the classic Buggs line coming up there! Now, I will deny it all but I can tell you these were used not up to the 60s but saw field use right up into the late 80s early 90s in certain parts of the world (tho mainly later marks) and I would not at all be surprised if a few were still out there. One thing, I have bever seen one with a cut spring, all the ones I have used have a standard weight "light" spring and indeed the example in your hands has a factory finished spring a fact that should, sir, TBh, be obvious to you. I have however seen them with the gas vent holes brazed up and redrilled to adjust the gas bleed into the expansion chamber. That is the only adjustment I have seen for various loads to ensure they don't run away or go supersonic. Oh, and that is asbestos in the foregrip, not horsehair. I seriously suggest that if the buyer is reading this and intends to use the weapon rather than just let it collect dust on a shelf (a fate as one who has used a MK VI in the field can attest, it does not deserve) that he or she replaces it with woven glass exhaust wrap which looks identical but won't potentially adversely affect your health.

Military use, there is dedicated , extremely high pressure ammo for subguns. Like +p++ level 124 grain ball. 148 grain for subsonic. Maybe that is part of the cycling issue? It would seem like a faster burn rate would be the handloading solution. To get as much velocity as possible and make as much rearward energy as possible with the setup. That first silencer chamber , combined with fast burn rate , would allow for more back pressure sooner ,allowing for the case pressure to drop to almost zero by the time it clears the chamber once a load is worked out using data from a reputable reloading manual. There are A TON of loads listed in the major books , they are not all designed to make the fastest bullet possible. Many are tweaked for accuracy potential, reliable cycling in old auto loading designs that are far less forgiving than modern designs are. Some are to simply allow for safe use in antiques , with enough velocity and energy to go hunting in most cases...point is, there will be a loading ,that operates this gun reliably and without risking to blow it up with responsible loading practices Lol.

Yeah, probably they would have expected it to be fired with SMG ammo, especially since with the exception of some Browning Hi-Powers they did not even have a handgun chambered in 9mm in use, so all of their 9mm ammo would be speced with the expectation that it's going into an SMG.

I love how it just goes *click*, but it makes me wonder, could something be done about that sound too (other than going full bolt-action), like some rubber buffer between bolt and chamber built in such way as not to mess up the headspace?
@wolflegion_
@wolflegion_ 2 жыл бұрын
Any soft buffer would be way too variable, especially with wear over time. I think the best possible solution would be something like a slide lock for pistols, as seen in knights “hush puppy”. Or by disengaging the gas system in a rifle. It’s turn your gun into a single fire, so you’d have to cycle it each time just like a bolt action. But you retain all the other features.
@williammears9272
@williammears9272 2 жыл бұрын
From what I know the reason why there’s a noise when the bolt closes is because it operates on an open bolt system. So by design it’s going to make a hell of a racket when it fires, so to make it quieter it’ll have to be a closed bolt design but by that point you might as well design something new and better
@geodkyt
@geodkyt 2 жыл бұрын
You can't lock the bolt, and you can't really cushion the bolt closure, *because* it is an open bolt gun. That bolt has to be moving with enough energy to strip and feed a cartridge *and* fire it with the fixed firing pin as the bolt closes. With a hammer or striker fired closed bolt.gun, you can effectively turn it into a manual action where the bullet impacting the berm 100 yards downrange is louder than the click of the firing right next to your ear (BTDT). Now, if you're getting significant noise from the recoiling parts hitting the back of the receiver on the opening stroke, you could buffer that (which many non-suppressed guns, both open and closed bolt already do, just to reduce felt recoil, reduce rate of fire, or decrease receiver wear) and reduce that mechanical noise. This Sten is about as quiet as one can get an open bolt gun.
@discerningscoundrel3055
@discerningscoundrel3055 2 жыл бұрын
Your best bet would be to go to a manually operated gun, something like the DeLisle carbine, a Lee Enfield adapted to .45acp with an enormous integral suppressor. They even had a rubber pad under the bolt handle to deaden the sound of the bolt handle on the receiver when locking the bolt.

I think the problem with these silencer demos is Ian is wearing a microphone right beside the gun so it's very hard to hear what someone standing to the side or 10m away would. On the video it still sounds like a loud clack. I think for these sorts of demonstrations it would be a good idea to turn the mike off, or use the camera mike and put the camera at a distance where an observer might be. Maybe even compare the silenced shot with a shot of the same ammo through an unsilenced weapon in similar conditions.

I was wondering if you were going to have feeding issues with that; the standard issue 9x19mm round in British service after the war was designated 2Z, and issued for both pistol and SMG (Sterling) is roughly equivalent to a 125g FMJ +P round, in todays money. Hope that helps :)
