The initial patent for what would become the Bergmann pistols was actually a delayed blowback mechanism, and it was quickly revised to simple blowback by Louis Schmeisser. The first actual production pistols, designated the No.1, used this plain blowback system.
This initial Bergmann-Schmeisser design's notable features include loading via 5-round Mannlicher type clip, a recoil spring located under the barrel, and a unique birds-head style grip. Note also the bolt guide rail on the left side of the pistol.
Very few of the No.1 pistols would be made before a number of significant changes were made, resulting in the 1896 pattern, including the No.2, No.3, and No.4 pistols.

To all you fans of the channel who may have rare firearms of your own, I strongly encourage you to share your collection with Ian. It is a shame when guns are locked away out of sight. Fabulous pistols, I collect pre 1900 Bergmann pistols and I have two of the 1894 models number 6 and number 8. They are similar to number 14 in Ians video with number 8 being the closest in features. All was not lost with these 'experimental firearms' as you know Bergmann learned from these and produced the fairly successful number two and three with a few number four's among them. Great presentation Ian - very rare pistols for sure.

I noticed there's this really cool motif in Star Wars of giving heroes blasters based on turn of the century Semi autos. Obviously Han has his Mauser, and in episode 7 he gives Rey a blaster that looks an awful lot like it was built off of a Bergmann. Now in rogue one, Jyn Erso is given what looks like an artillery Luger with a heavy barrel.

afaik, it was standard practice to place your pistol in your left hand and load with your right in that time period. the french 1873 revolver has the loading gate and ejector on the right side, ian covered quite a few revolvers from that era that are the same (look up his vid on the 20-shot pinfire revolver for some eye candy). something else to think about is that pistols were designed to be shot one-handed. your other hand was either holding horse-reigns, a blade (for officers), or flipping off your target (i assume).

The Pistol in Big Jake was called a Bergman 1911 but was in fact a Walther P38 that was mocked up to look like the Bergman.

@@535tony I guess that makes sense because the pistol was so rare even at the time that movie was filmed. Thanks for the Hollywood facts.

It's interesting that the layout of the Bergmann is quite like the very popular competion pistols by Walther, Pardini, Hammerli, and others.

In my opinion that's a really good looking pistol. It reminds me of a competition shooter's custom made handgun for some reason.

Agreed. I think they're extremely attractive pistols. Kind of a shame they are far too niche for anyone to manufacture reproductions.
