I have not a single time seen them then not using that data, or even rolling back the regulation. Instead they just churn out scandals of how they misused that data to spy on their wives lovers or whatever. Now if they clearly don't care on the usefulness of that data on actual criminal investigations, wouldn't that mean we'd be here regardless of if there are criminals abusing the systems or not? What I mean is good people dont loose privacy because bad people exist, the loose privacy because glowing corrupts, and absolute glowing corrupts absolutely. Some of us who have studied physics don't take quantum computing as a credible threat. Specifically, we expect the difficulty of keeping the quantum computer from crashing during the job of cracking a public key to be exponential with key length. If I might indulge in a conspiracy theory: the NSA could be hyping quantum computing to sell a quantum resistant algorithm for which they have a back door.

A government doesn't backdoor encryption probably but force the service to implement in backdoor in their service/protocol to get data decrypted for them. The EU for example solves this encryption problem now by scanning messages client-side and automatically forward to their services if necessary. So you don't need to backdoor the servers if you can backdoor all clients essentially. ^^'
@hanelyp1
@hanelyp1 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheJackiMonster Another reason open source and protocols are important. Harder to slip in a backdoor to the client if you can inspect code and behavior.
@TheJackiMonster
@TheJackiMonster 2 жыл бұрын
@@hanelyp1 Technically that's true but in the end you still have weak spots in open protocols which can be abused. Most services are still centralized and most of them require server trust to make the protocol be trusted. So in theory a malicious or compromised server still breaks most protocols even if they are open and this weakness might be known. The reason for not abandoning such services immediately is quite easy. Decentralized services are much more complicated to implement and to harden against different kind of attacks. So it's not really like there are perfect alternatives for most centralized services out there to fit the gap of privacy needs and convenience... at least not yet.

The new anti-privacy law that passed in australia makes all companies obliged to collect more data from users and provide them to the government even if they're not already doing so if requested by the secret services, disclosing this information is also punishable by 10 years in prison, given that australia is a part of the 5 eyes, this could easily have an effect on the rest of the world as well
@DMSBrian24
@DMSBrian24 2 жыл бұрын
so essentially, any company, even one developing open source software, could potentially be *forced* to release fake source code and actually implement some spying features in the binary (but that would allow people to compile the source code at least) or maybe even worse, this would make it impossible for open source software to exist since sharing it would be disclosing the secret information and punishable by 10 years of prison, in other words we should nuke australia

Yes and no. The mobile-coin might be sold on other exchanges and you could spend it on signal. In that scenario, signal does not require any KYC since you are not making any purchases from fiat->crypto, but just spending crypto.

You don't specify which of these requires a phonennumber. I don't think hashed phonenumbers are difficult at all to decrypt. All the numbers are known, they can obtain all phonenumbers from providers and just makes hashes of every single one. The glowies certainly have the resources to do this and with the hashes from signal provided to them they might figure out what hashing standard and salt was used, if not they can just run the most known hashing protocols and salts until they get matches. If signal allows groups chats that is another potential vulnerability.

As much as I liked signal, my signal got hacked because someone was able to login to my bank using my signal which was connected to my sms. I ended up having to delete my account and everything. Really a shame but hopefully these forks can be better
