The Romain Grosjean "fireball" crash would have also been a good one to mention. I think he was also outspoken about the HALO in that it wasn't a good idea, just a few years before it saved his life. However, I'm not 100% positive if he was initially against it or not but it definitely rings a bell; and his crash was pure nightmare fuel!

While the Halo clearly very very important and definitely would have and had saved lives, it likely wouldn't have saved Jules Bianchi. The only thing what would've prevented Bianchi's death is the heavy machinery that have no place anywhere inside the track while the race cars are still moving around. Besides Halo, Bianchi's crash also born a lot of changes to F1 like Virtual Safety Car, clarification of which flags for what situation, having specialist neurosurgeon on call at every F1 session in a nearby hospital, as well as prohibiting any racing activities if the medical helicopter couldn't work for any reason.

Senna didn't go head-on into the wall; he hit it at a shallow angle. The outside front wheel was dislodged and the right sidepod of the car was demolished. The front crash structure and the left-front were intact. I remember it quite vividly. Also, the mandating of the HANS device seemed mostly borne out of Dale Earnhardt's crash in 2001 where he was killed in what should've been a very survivable accident. He suffered a basilar skull fracture due to hyperextension of his neck, which killed him. The halo wouldn't have done anything for Massa. Look at where the spring hit him in the helmet. The halo exists above a driver's head.

Well, it can be said thst FIA held several smoking guns in 1990..., according to Norbert Singer, the lead constructor at Porsche's dominating LeMans-team, they made the discovery that racecars themselves simply aren't the right place to provide crumple zones in the late 1970s, which makes sense as they are essentially taylor-fitted to the driver - even if the car survived a crash in one piece, an impact at 100+kph may still cause deadly deceleration forces to the driver. So they experimented with rows of tires that weren't just set there (as was common at tracks already, so very little effort), but also connected to each other and filled with foam - which suddenly allowed large enough crumple zones to make not only roadcars, but the fragile aluminium monocoque prototypes of the time surviveable. They crashed several cars into this, did a complete study told FIA about their findings in detail, recommended that this should be mandatory, some tracks actually incorporated this, and FIA soon moved - well, more than a decade later, after Senna and Ratzenberger had died on the same weekend. One has to keep in mind that any object wrapped around a driver moving at 300kph against an unmovable solid object is absolutely a deathtrap, regardless of how strong the chassis is.

Strange to think about how the movie "rush" would have been edited if viewpoints on safety hadn't changed. Hunt as the hero of the story, beating a cowardly champion who tried to use his backing and the dominant Ferrari's image - who backed down from the true challenges of racing while trying to influence the other drivers to get an advantage in the championship. Obviously, that's not the story, but editing changes everything, as does perspective. Now we see Lauda as brave and respectable for sticking to his guns and not backing down, carrying those safety concerns for the rest of his life and continuing to influence f1.

22:25 I disagree, the Halo is certainly a big step forward in F1 car safety, but it's not the greatest. HANS is by far the device with the greatest impact on improving pilot safety. The Halo will protect the pilot from external impacts from large objects, but the HANS protects the pilot from whiplash, this type of injury is much easier to occur as even at low speeds it can cause considerable damage to the neck. Other than that, great video.
