Fortress Maximus is the Best Transformers Character. Here's why. Why isn't he in Rise of the Beasts? The screen can't fit his greatness! The movie would collapse around him! I'm not upset I promise :(

It’s so weird how Fortress Maximus and Scorponok were shrunken down to just larger than average bots. While Trypticon and Metroplex remained titan-sized behemoths.

I actually like both versions. G1 and comic. Especially G1 Headmasters. Dude was literally told by Rodimus to "hey I'm going on a quest, you be leader mkay? kthxbyeeeeee" and despite being against violence, he stood up and took the mantle despite it not being in his nature. This is probs controversial but in terms of leaders, Fort Max > Rodimus EDIT: Forgot to include why I like the comic version haha. Anyways, IDW is a completely different animal. He was traumatized after years of being tortured by Overlord and was mentally & emotionally unstable after that but you can see that there was a good bot underneath all of the PTSD. It made it all the more satisfying in the end when he became a trusted enforcer of justice again. He even doesn't shoot to kill anymore iirc

It just occurred to me that the IDW “soldier who needs to figure out how to go on without a war” thing is literally the OPPOSITE of Budyanski’s original character profile of a guy who wanted to get AWAY from the war. Maybe the G1 cartoon transferring this personality onto Cerebros kinda muddled that intention for the character’s major western debut, while the Marvel comics got to actually use that characterization but were generally less seen. I would like to see the original intended take on Fort Max be explored in a more mainstream format one day, especially because the Titan characters are so often seen as living superweapons that his disinterest in the war (as well as Trypticon’s, his original characterization never gets touched on either) is really interesting to me. Maybe Metroplex can be the one that just saw himself as a soldier, which could tie into his own main character thrust of wanting to do more and help more, as well as form relationships with his fellow Autobots, but being unable to because of his crucial function as a base and last line of defense. Just some thoughts on these characters, idk EDIT: my enjoyment of Fort Max’s original characterization does not mean that I think his IDW persona can’t continue either. If I had to try to include both, I’d either include aspects of his IDW self in his motivation for being weary of the war or apply his IDW personality wholesale to Brave Maximus from RID01, who IS genuinely a blank slate

I know the titans return show sucked but it did kinda do that as when windblade wakes him and tries to make him help In the trypticon battle he says that he wasn't built for fighting

That’s always been my biggest problem with IDW Transformers and Transformers fiction for the last several is often they’ll eschew the original character bios to make them into something else entirely. A thing I used to be fine with but have since come to yearn for writers to actually use the toy bios for inspiration rather than the Sunbow cartoon or TFTM 1986 movie for inspiration. For every IDW Thundercracker (Actually using the original toy bio to inform his character) and IDW Soundwave (Reinventing the character into someone more narratively dynamic), you also get about four IDW Star Sabers (Changing the character to the point of alienation and forgetting the character’s roots with IDW Star Saber unanimously considered one of the worst character reinventions in the franchise next to Energon Ironhide) with it. The toy bios are what made the characters who they are today but they don’t get as much respect as they should and sometimes outright ignored by lesser writers who thinks making the millionth Transformers The Movie reference will earn them brownie points rather than just learning how to actually write a TF story worth experiencing. I blame Persona/SMT for making me write the above comment when it comes to appreciating the source material more. Damn it, I want a G1 Bluestreak who does have survivor’s guilt and prejudice towards Decepticons because of his past trauma straight for the original bio in a story. Have more character reinventions that’s still true to them but expanded upon to have more meat to their bones.

I personally think there are compelling versions of the character outside of IDW, but that comic’s version of him is still great. Like the writing is good but “made something out of nothing” is a misnomer to me given works like the Headmasters miniseries from Marvel or well, the Headmasters cartoon where he became the leader of the Autobots

The problem with IDW Transformers is that when they’re using a lesser used character is that they have a habit of completely changing them into someone else like they’re a DC character. Guess I’m someone who’d like for a pre-existing character to have their original characters as written by their creators or at least have something tying to their original interpretations like all good adaptations.

FORT MAX!!!!!!!! :DDD I'm kinda sad that he didn't get a huge showoff with Overlord, too, but I'll be honest and say that I'm glad he got the ending he did, rather than another one of the tragic endings that JRO is (unfortunately) very good at writing. I'm still upset about Ravage. That was undeserved. :(
