To be fair, I've had police going the other way wagging their finger at me for hanging off the bike,not knee down. It keeps the bike more upright with bigger tyre contact patch. Not every copper is a biker, made my riding buddy laugh as he's a copper!🤣

Al's very last point was the best point in this video, there's a massive difference between experienced riders getting their knee down in a controlled manner with proper body position vs those who are using the country lanes to practice trying to get their knee down....glad you made that point Al, I didn't think it was coming!

I remember in the 90's we used to drill 1/8 holes in the sliders, and superglue Zippo lighter flints into them. Kicks up sparks beautifully..... Best seen in the evenings for full effect

I'm a cop, got nothing against people getting a knee down in a *safe environment*.. more power to you. We all know what's dangerous (or should), any attempt to tell the cop "actually officer I was just moving my contact patch" well... good luck with that lol. Ride safe, race on track, don't put other peoples lives in danger.

So basically you're shafted if a copper thinks your knee down is dangerous because even if found not guilty you could be out of pocket by £2,000 in lawyer fees.

So basically, if it comes to a "motoring offence" you're guilty until proven innocent (+ out of pockets thousands in legal fees). How is this allowed when the whole justice systems is supposed to be based on "innocent until proven guilty".

I spoke to Andrew about my case. An officer ticketed me for having no mirrors on my bike and put it under the alleged offense of 'failure to have proper view' lmao. Andrew was quick to tell me it ISNT illegal to have no mirrors on your motorcycle and if they do pursue me in court, I will be happy to read out the road construction and use act to the judge where it clearly states, 'no requirement'. Police are a joke.

Knee down with a bike that’s leant over less than when it’s on its side stand is a rare skill

Can remember back in the 90's, groups of us all practicing the technique around Podimore roundabout. FZR400's, me on my NS400r, CBR's, ZXR's, strokers......ah summer memories

I live in Tennessee in the US, and so many riders want to go to Tail of the Dragon with their mates and show off, among other of the many twisties around it, and they have no idea and go off. They go off before even getting to the first turn as they come out of the petrol station at the start because it has a hill that goes flat in a relatively straight turn. Once on the TOTD, they cross the lines all the time, they go off but spend a lot of time in the opposite lane, or they go incredibly slow because they’re scared, but are too self-absorbed to even consider letting the faster traffic by on the MANY MANY pull-offs. The cars cutting the corners is even worse. Best thing to do on well-renowned twisties is to stay in your lane, have sow drills you’re practicing to sharpen your skills when you have a multitude of opportunities (such as trail braking), and use it as an opportunity to hone your skills, learn how to stay safe, learn to ‘ride your own ride’, and show respect for the hazards that are exaggerated on twisty roads.

"You can't give evidence on your own behalf." ???!!! UK laws always seemed a mess to me but this is next level silliness. Average speed cameras, overzealous police, low speed limits... riding on the "wrong" side of the road is bad enough but I think I will no longer plan to tour the UK by bike. That once was a dream of mine but I suppose I need to let that go.

Solid white lines. Highway Code says “You must not cross or straddle”. Usual exceptions of course. Passing very slow vehicles when safe to do so etc.

My chicken strips are as wide as kat slaters gash so I think I'm fine , usefull vid for some bikers though Al 👍

I'm an enforcement officer and I totally agree with the point about the attitude test, you can possibly talk your way out of a notice but you can certainly talk your way into one. I am unlikely to get my knee down, at least deliberately, so the two offences (other than speeding) that the police seem to be watching for here are lifting the front wheel or sustained loss of traction, for both you will be walking home.

Sounds like good advice :) In the unlikely event that I can manage to get my knee down, I will bare this in mind.

Me, gene wilder and Michael fox had a similar conversation about 20 years ago, gene is still the only person I've ever seen riding a motorcycle whilst seated backwards going 130mph down the freeway.

I live in the US and I got pulled for passing to many vehicles in one go...in a passing zone in North Carolina. He tried telling me I could only pass two vehicles at a time. I said give me a ticket that sounds like reckless driving, he gave me a verbal warning. I was actually disappointed because I knew he was full of crap.

Do a track day and you will have your right knee down by the end of the morning, the left knee tends to take a little longer but when you can do it it’s excellent. And you do feel to be in better control of your bike.

If you're brought to court on an offence, that you prove to be not an offence, then you should be able to claim back any expenses you incurred proving your innocence.

For me, if you get your kneew down, it is likely you need to get your knee down, to successfully negotiate the bend. Therefore you must be going too fast. If you love to play, and I am an old bloke who still likes to play, go to the track. Ask yourself can I see the tractor with a huge plough on the back the other side of the bend? I sound like my granddad, maybe because I am a granddad, and I've survived motorcycling for a very long time! Agree with the last bit of someone trying to get their knee down while being bolt upright on the bike. So many riders thinking they're actually going knee down and that is saving the bike's lean angle when its the opposite and they're about to outride their available grip, making the whole maneuver actually unsafe.

Great advice but me being a novice, the closest I get to putting my knee down is when I do my Tyre pressures....

I bought a SRAD in 95 and on that very day never failed to get either knee down on the road. The bike & tyre is key for starters for anyone learning. I still do & I'm 53 now but there's a time and a place to ride these days its not what it was back in the 90's. Showing my age lol.

Officer: “yep saw you got your knee down on that corner...but that’s not why I’m stopping you...” Biker: “😞” Officer: “the 300yd wheelie out of the corner is why I’m stopping you” Biker in court: “Ah, well you see I was scanning for badgers 🦡 and took a high vantage point as a safety precaution, having attended wheelie school to develop these additional measures”

Nice thoughts. If my knee is stuck to the pavement though, I’m definitely misbehaving significantly… This children, is why you scout the road like a reasonably prudent hooligan BEFORE you put on your mad hat 😊

It probably depends on the bike and height of the rider as well. Some guys could get their knee down going granny speeds. Other people would have to be at 60 degrees lean for their knee to touch the ground.

In order to receive a ticket from a police officer, one must first pull over to allow the officer to make contact. So by deductive reasoning, if you don't pull over, you don't get a ticket!

Firstly great chanel gentle folk of the shire, obviously this one could spark alot of debate, knee down for me is track only or picking up a quid someones dropped, just a word of warning on knee down whilst road riding. Im a former fire officer and once spent an hour looking for a poor individuals detached head in a hawthorn bush. This was unfortunately a comination of knee down and a extended wing mirror on a car towing a caravan. Witnesses to the accident said the unfortunate party had not crossed the white line! So beware you never quite know what your gonna get on the road. Keep up good work boys, love the news desk!

Great video! Getting your knee down and thus hanging off the bike or just draging your sliders on your boots, while not hanging of the bike. Makes about 3°degrees of lean angle difference.

It is more dangerous in my opinion, Your contact area is reduced, More chance of loss of traction. We hit a little roundabout spot in the summer for a bit of fun, Police have arrived before and just told us to stop if any other vehicles come by being a dead end road with a giant roundabout.

For a perfectly smooth track it's justifiable, not seen many roads where it seems sensible. Pot holed & rough road surfaces where I live. You run the risk of getting knocked off or dislocating your knee/hip.

It almost always costs you less to avoid a showdown than to invite one and win. Fundamental rule of life, really.

I don't ride as fast as Ago or Hailwood used to and they didn't get their knee down.I have seen some riders on the road adopt some strange body postures in search of this habit.They can often be found circling big roundabouts while a friend waits with camera at the ready to capture the wonderful moment!

Also consider the general perception that, with the current popularity of motogp telecasts, people think that you only put your knee down if you are racing not riding normally. I’ve been riding for over 40 years now and, right up until his recent death, I could not convince my old man that you even needed to lean a motorcycle into a corner and by doing so you were being a hoon!! His logic?? In his storied youth he had ridden and raced push bikes for many years and had never, ever had to lean his push bike to go round corners. As this defies all logic and physics, I pressed deeper into his experiences. Turns out that he only ever rode and raced on fully banked, specially made tracks that were designed to get max speed out of the bikes without all that pesky leaning stuff. No matter how gently or carefully I tried to explain that there is a massive difference between cornering on a flat bit of road to a banked track and even pointed out kids riding their push bikes on the road nearby, he still insisted that they were being idiots and not riding them properly lol Oooooh so frustrating but y’get that at times lol so reception plays such a big role and often wins out over logic and sense. My dear old great Aunty Lilly had it right when she said so regularly, “The most uncommon thing in Australia is common sense”

Got caught by the police going round a roundabout with my knee down. Thought I was fudged as they were of the sparking type.. they pulled me, asked where I lived.. only 3 miles away. They told me if I want to do that sort of thing go back there and do it!... not the response I was expecting.. ok officer. Thank you.

There is no offence of 'Knee Down'. An offence would be committed if the rider was deemed to be 'Not in a position to be in proper control', Dangerous, Reckless, Careless or inconsiderate driving/riding. It would be impossible to prove ' not in control ' unless you come off or cause other road users to deviate.

What I found a few times is being able to get your knee down can literally save you from crashing, or over shooting a corner and going on the wrong side of the road, as my mate did a few years ago, he never had gotten his knee down and wasn’t used of that lean angle which made him over shoot the corner, where as was used of it and cleared the corner with ease

Lucky you brits!!! In Spain simply touching the knee to the ground os considered reckless driving, even though you could just bring your knee up and go faster. But regardless of how slow or fast you're going, touching the knee to the ground will land you a ticket for reckless driving

Forcing other drivers to change their course......There is a really good example of that on Stuart Fillingham’s channel. ( The Yorkshire plonker) pulls off a dangerous overtake and actually included it in his you tube channel as “advanced riding!”.

You didn't mention one other key thing and that is that by shifting your weight to the inside of the corner and ,in the extreme, getting your knee down actually means that, for any given speed, your lean angle is going to be less than it would be if you were to remain with your arse dead centre of the seat...

I did it in front of a cop at deals gap here in the USA. he just stood there with his hand on his hips. never did anything about it.

so if an uneducated police person took this to court, and you threw out all the stops and won the case, could you then take that police person to civil court for your unexpected solicitor fees?

I was actually looking into the physics of knee down/ body positioning earlier this week ou of curiosity and this is what I gathered (please if there's anyone that has greater knowledge of this stuff and can correct me on anything wrong I'd appreciate it) Imagine you're turning left in your car, what happens to your body ? It gets pushed to the outside of the turn, in this case to the right because of centripetal force. The same thing happens on a motorcycle, but since it only has two wheels that means the bike would simply fall to the right if it tried turning while completely upright. Now imagine your bike is stopped and you lean it to the left, what happens if you don't hold it up ? It will fall to the left, that's because you moved it's center of gravity to the left. That's why bikes lean into the corner, so the centripetal force of the corner forcing you out is balanced out by the "falling in" motion of the leaned bike. The more you lean your bike, the more the center of gravity moves to the left and thus, the greater the centripetal force it can counteract (ie, you can corner tighter or at higher speeds) By moving your body to the inside you are moving the center of gravity of the bike/rider system further to the inside of the corner and thus, for a fixed speed and corner radius, causing the falling in force to exceed the centripetal force of the turn. The way to bring the system back in balance is to lean less, bringing the center of gravity less to the inside and thus putting it in balance with the centripetal force of the corner. By hanging off you have to lean less and by leaning less you have a larger contact patch and the bike's suspension can work better (since they work up and down but not side to side) and thus are safer.

Knowledge is power.......great series, giving bikers the confidence to argue the toss with the the pigs may halt the stress of a pending court case by educating them on the spot

Rule of thumb, technically legal or not is not to do anything conspicuous around the bill. Unfortunately I don't think it would be unreasonable if they stop and ask where in acquiring a full UK motorcycle license, was putting your knee on the floor suggested, trained or a requirement? I can't think of any car maneuvers you can do that are not part of the test and not be commuting some sort of offense, even if knee down technically isn't. However we all know that kneedown alleviates lean angle and often feels more comfortable, thus reducing risk but I think plod will need to have had his Greg's that day to appreciate that!

It's funny that the law all depends on the police officer and his current mood, and even if you do challenge him they're banking on the fact you won't because if you win in court, it'll still cost you couple of grand. It's like wanking into oncoming wind

All depends on the circumstances, driving below or far below that of a careful and competent driver/rider will get you some points dependant on the circs.

As a follow on to this what about dragging other things like bits of the bike? I mean hero blobs are designed for it but what about if you're dragging the pegs, exhaust, frame? It sounds like you would be going mad but a lot of bikes (usually cruisers or other non-sporty bikes) can drag allsorts at even very mild lean angles and miles away from the limit of grip.

There's Absolutely No Need to Ride with Knee Down on Public Roads Especially as Surface Changes Almost Daily ..It Also puts Other Motorists at Risk.. Also Driving According to Conditions Means even doing 60 in a 60 can at times Be Excessive..
