Does that big heavy breather air cleaner get in the way of your leg when you have forward controls on your Low Rider ST (or Low Rider S for that matter)?

I tried a similar setup on a demo Fatbob that had an optional SE Heavy Breather Elite and didn’t like it. The mid controls on ST are surprisingly comfortable but I am thinking of changing the air filter to something a little more low profile which would give me the option to go to forward controls later with no knee clearance issues with the old air filter. Each to their own! Love to see what people are doing with their ST!

That sounds like a good idea. Still early days for me with the ST. I imagine there will be a few mods on the horizon once I've ridden it for a while and seen what needs adjustment 🤟😎

@@MisterKiwiRider I recommend adjusting the clutch pedal down one or two clicks from the factory setting if you have not already. The only other thing I have done to mind is remove all the orange reflectors and stickers inside the bags. I’m about to order a Klockwerks 6” Flare Windscreen in dark smoke while I consider the other modifications. I’m torn on exhaust at the moment but leading towards the Bassani Road Rage in mercury chrome.

I sat on the Lowrider S At a bike show and at 5'11 my right knee was resting on the air cleaner. When pressing the brake pedal the air cleaner definitely felt in the way and I had to adjust my foot to properly line up with the pedal. Not ideal in an emergency braking scenario. First thing I would do If I bought this bike would be to change out the air cleaner (the 114 style air cleaner fits the bill) and add forward controls. Then some slip ons

I just test rode one and that was the first thing I noticed. Just riding with MID controls stock I was full shin on the air cleaner. I'm thinking I'd be swapping out to a different air cleaner. Great vid!

This is what my concern was, and I’m considering the low profile oval air cleaner to swap. I’m having my forward controls put on this week

Nice Bike I like the way that snorkel cleaner looks. But......... Fashion and function are two different things. That is why I have not put one of those on my bike. I wondered if it would be a problem for the reasons you have described. I am about the same height as you. Thanks, Bruce. Hey looking at traveling to NZ maybe next year.

Gidday Kev, this heavy breather is definitely there for function on the big 117, although I must admit that I do like the look of it too. That's cool to hear about a trip to NZ. If you're in the right area and it works out we'd love to catch up. Love a good motovlogger meetup!

I wonder if the air clear from another Softail would work? I noticed they don’t stick out as far. Would be a matter of proper airflow for the engine. Or possibly a aftermarket one.

Gidday to Hawkes Bay! My favourite road that I have ridden to date would have to be The Forgotten World Highway. Another great riding road is the west coast of the South Island. The Catlins area down south is fantastic. Also, a bonus one, I really enjoyed riding in the far north (at least until I feel off!) We'll definitely be back there. Plus there's still heaps of the east of the North Island that we've still yet to explore 👍

Hey Bruce, I reckon you'll get used to it real quick and forwards has to be the way to go. My Dyna has a big old heavy breather snorkel sticking out the side, didn't feel that thing at all with forwards and a stock seat but when I changed my seat to a Sundowner it pushed me forward just an inch or so, but enough for the knee to be touching on the snorkel. I thought this was the end of the world even despite the plusher seating comfort but that lasted only a couple of days and then you just naturally adjust and it's no issue at all. Now I wouldn't change a single thing about it. My two cents. 😎🤘

I appreciate your two cents and I think you're quite right. Even after a short ride yesterday I barely noticed and the air cleaner
@61soldiergirl
@61soldiergirl Жыл бұрын
That makes sense,you just have to adjust your riding position and it should become natural over time I would think. Unless it’s just too much. I just took over my wife’s 03 low rider,she passed away in Dec. so I’m thinking of keeping her bike till I’m gone. But she ordered it new and mid controls were right for her. But me at 6’3” I just can’t get comfortable riding with my legs at 90 degrees. I’m going to put forward controls on it. I didn’t want to change anything on her bike but I’m gonna have too.

@@61soldiergirl sorry to hear about the loss of your wife. Yes, I struggled even at 5'11 with the whole 90 degree leg thing I found that I got used to this very quickly and don't really even think about it now

Thanks mate for answering my question. I put a deposit and cannot wait till the bike arrives. I have seen some videos where they replaced the air cleaner with more flush option to get out of the way. Probably will have to wait and see how it would fit me. One last question, I have seen other vloggers talking about that the power comes at about 3,500 rpms, just wondering how does it feel below this?
@MisterKiwiRider
@MisterKiwiRider 2 жыл бұрын
It's not bad but not great and would definitely benefit from some performance upgrades. I would say that it feels a little sluggish but does have instant response when you twist the throttle.

@@MisterKiwiRider good question. That brings me to this,when I bought my 98 heritage,I had no low end power and had it to the dealership three times and once to my house. They couldn’t fix the problem. I had to take it to a good bike mechanic and after a couple grand. Pipes,ignition,adjustable pushrods,cam and S&S carb the thing was fixed. I had two or three new different Harley carbs changed and just didn’t fix it. But I believe it was the S&S carburetor that made the bike right. And naturally the other upgrades but the carb. Was the problem and the fix.

@@61soldiergirl That's interesting to hear. Surprisingly I have found that some mods I have done to my exhaust (cutting out the stock baffles and replacing with some home built ones have helped with improving the low-end torque somewhat

That air cleaner design is ridiculous, 100% style over function. First job is to replace it with the HD Ventilator flat cleaner.
