The X-29's head test pilot has stated that the advantages of the forward-swept wings are now possible with more conventional looking designs that do not suffer from the tendency of the X-29 and Berkut etc to want to the de-wing themselves mid flight. He also stated that, even with the computers, the X-29's flight envelope had to be kept pretty modest to prevent the no-wing scenario.

The x-29 and the SU-47 were such a huge part of my childhood growing up. I had mini models of both planes and freaking loved them. Those two designs consumed my imagination when playing with planes. Crazy to realize all these years later that they were never actually anything more than test planes and only one or two were ever actually produced.

This is weird - I dreamt about this last night. 1983 ish Science Now magazine in the UK ran an article about forward swept wing aircraft, although I think that it also mentioned the wings being of variable geometry, a bit like a Tornado or F14 in reverse. As a school woodwork project I tried to build a variable geometry forward swept wing aircraft betting some friends 20p each that I could do it. Anyway I made a pigs breakfast of it and it cost me 80p. By September 1984 I'd dropped woodwork in favour of engineering drawing, which at least means that I can decipher flat pack furniture instructions. Everything that I made in woodwork was good for one thing - burning.

@@alm5992, rather than bombs the 162D would carry R4HL air-to-ground rockets in addition to it's 20mm autocannons, the concept being that it's wing configuration would give it better maneuverability during low altitude strafing runs on ground targets. Makes sense why they didn't continue to develop this technology all that much. Sure if we were to build something like that today the maneuverability would be insane at low speeds, but being slow in any kind of fighter is often a death sentence. Superior speed and conservation of speed are quite a bit more important than super maneuverability.

No... no it wouldn't, thr plane constantly wants to flip backwards in a more natural aerodynamic state. There is ZERO advantage to having reverse wing design, its unstable to the point it REQUIRES computer control to prevent the plane from flipping around and traveling backwards. It was a proof of concept that the computers where good enough to keep thebplane from flipping around
@notisac3149
@notisac3149 6 ай бұрын
@@Patrickf5087 But it IS more maneuverable than most jets at low speeds, and would be even better with modern computer technology due to the inherent instability. Other than that, yeah there are pretty much no advantages but what’s your point? Did you read my comment?

@@notisac3149 yes I did read it, abd I'm calling out your BS Having better computer won't help it, it would require shaping the wings and changing alot m9re physics. Not ti mention that it is a fuel hog tge wings produce an ungodly amount of drag. And yes, the military needs to worry about fuel usage. The designers literally made the aircraft "to see if it can be done" The disadvantages outweigh by a large margin. No amount of CPU power will help it
@notisac3149
@notisac3149 6 ай бұрын
@@Patrickf5087 Did I EVER say the advantages would outweigh the disadvantages? nope. Though it is to my understanding that the design of the SU-47 can make calculations a certain amount of times per second, how would increasing the number of corrections per second with better computers and sensors not increase performance even slightly? To add to it, we now have stronger materials to work with, one big factor was a great amount of stress on the airframe, thus forcing lower speeds. Having a stronger frame means it can take more stress. How would a higher top speed not improve performance? We also have better, more efficient engines, with a better power to weight ratio as well as better fuel efficiency ratings, I ask again, how would that not increase performance? There is also the possibility of adding thrust vectoring which would increase low speed maneuvers. If they don’t add too much weight, wouldn’t it have better low speed maneuverability? How is simple logic BS at all? Again I never claimed it was a great idea to begin with, just that it could be even more maneuverable at low speeds with modern technology. I never said that we should have continued to develop it because the design simply doesn’t make sense for a jet fighter. What is your point then? I NEVER even mentioned that it would be better than modern fighter designs but you’re replying to me as if I said the opposite.

The V-22 and Ki-43 are not swept-wing, but straight-wing. with either high aspect ratios or tapered trailing edges.

Truly a controversial fighter craft design concept, alongside tiltrotors and how helicopters should eject. Gods, that X-Men: TAS footage looks as nice as its Evolution successor. My copies seem to still have the grainy effects. (Edit: Ah, nevermind. The footage is actually from Spider-Man: TAS, which admittedly looks as good as The Spectacular Spider-Man in these modern releases, stock footage abuse aside.)

I own Macross Plus on DVD, and loved both Isamu's, and Guld's wings, I also own two of it's soundtracks. I first watched it on Teletoon. Take care, and all the best.

Always loved the design, it looks so aggressive. Didn't think about the wings being subjected to twisting forces before but that makes a lot of sense. I've heard it's bad if your wings break off midflight but haven't tested it myself.

Another appearence of a forward-swept wing design in media was in Genocyber, from 1994. In part 3, a test flight is conducted with a fictional F-30 fighter aircraft. Its design consists of cunnards at the front, forward-swept wings, 2 forward-swept vertical stabilizers and absent horizontal stabilizers. It's quite a bad anime in my opinion in many ways, but I do find this aircraft design quite interesting.

In our Axis&Allies house rules with enough Jet Engines and Aeronautics Tech development ze German player can produce the Ju 287 medium bomber and a forward swept wing tactical bomber version of the He 162. The game pieces for them look really cool but I need to paint them.

One thing that's important to note is that the lift advantage of canard configurations isn't really a priority in unstable aircraft, and especially in ones with a forward sweep or generally meant for high performance. This is primarily because to maintain an angle of attack where the wings are providing lift in level flight, the canards are still producing a downward force to balance out the tendency to want to summersault backwards. Induced drag reduction should also generally not be the focus when taking advantage of instability to be more maneuverable and responsive, as even in level flight the use of surfaces to keep the design stable undoes any advantage you would acquire when implementing drag reducing features.

Since the Grumman X-29 is partially constructed from the Northrop F-5 Freedom Fighter / Tiger II, I assume that an armed military version of the X-29 would have featured two wing-tip, four under-wing, and one under-fuselage pylon stations (seven total)?
