Fostex MR8 MKII - Powered Up In 2020

It's been ages since I've used this unit, I purchased it again years ago to re-review it later since my early Gear Review upload, but today we're seeing if it can handle a 64GB Compact Flash card.

Two questions: has anyone tested this with the red MR-8 and has anyone tested this with a cfSD yet?

Cool I have 3 of these and a MK1, 2 of them have cracked boards under the linens. The highest I've ever tried was a 2gb card so it's good for the info.

Any advice on a reset? I dug mine out of the dungeon. It lights up ..screen as well but seems frozen . I've messed with a few DAWs and confused as hell. I loved using this thing. It's a workhorse .

Do you still have ‘Foster Fever” installed on yours? Any of you guys have it? I remember it being funky/corny/somewhat-interesting and I am looking to sample it and/or the individual tracks

The preamps might be a bit noisy but in my view they are excellent to record saxophones - the tone is really warm and kind of "analogue" distortion found is some pro digital amps...I really enjoy listening to the sound of my sax from this little machine - so that I decided not to sell it.

@@SonicOrbStudios if you play loud instrument like trumpet or saxophone just give it a try - I've never tried recording vocals on the MR8 - the sax timbre is close to vocals but in general is a lot louder so the noise from the preamp doesn't matter much except in soft passages (then a bit of compression and limiter should keep noise at bay).

You can get a program called WAV Manager (2.1) and use the USB port on the side and connect that to a PC. I use a laptop. And it will copy tracks to the host PC.( It will Lable tracks , track1, track2, and so on.) You can connect a midi out to a DAW and control the session with the fostex too.

It's a shame they dropped the MIDI on the modern multitrackers.It's nice to record audio around the house then put it into Logic etc

Yeah, but it is still 16bit only. The earlier Tascam DP24/32 without CD drive have midi and able to record in 24 bit, but I have trouble record in some card in 24bit.

Are you sure it can handle more than 2GB from the card? I've used MKII with 8GB cards and if I remember right, there was only 2GB available from the card.

It's only able to access 2 GB because the card has to be formatted FAT 16.

@@SonicOrbStudios That would be awesome!! I’d really like to know the ins and out about this unit. Tried many times reading the manual but it just doesn’t stick. A video for dummies would be awesome!! 🤘🏼
