That fadeout drop at the end of the fader is on purpose. It's called audio taper. The idea is, when you're mixing near 0db you have very fine control over level. But to physically have a small fader that goes all the way to silence, it cannot be linear as it fades out. So manufacturers use a potentiometer that goes from 0db to say -10 over five centimeters and then from -10 to infinity over the next five centimeters. All mixing consoles do this to a certain degree. Aux sends and things do it too.

I use mine in a music group with kids in foster care. It truly is a workhorse, always works for me. The only thing I miss is onboard phantom power for a condenser mic, but I got a Samson S-phantom external phantom power box to let me use it with condenser mics. The kids I work with can be emotionally volatile, so I'd rather take this in than my Tascam 8-track digital.

That's great! Yeah, phantom power would have been nice. I run my mic into a mixer with phantom power, then into the MR8. Thanks for your work with kids in foster care. I was in the foster care system when I was very young. People who work in that field are doing very noble and important work!

I tried the MIDI out for a recording. The choices are a simple MIDI clock (which I used) or the more complex MTC/SMPTE timing. It's possible to use an external sequencer and record the audio to this clock, and afterwards view and replay it in the Fostex in Bar/Beat format instead of minutes and seconds. This makes a lot of intuitive sense and may help partial retakes or adding material. There are also simple part delete/copy/paste features for restructuring a recording on the Fostex, again these appear to be more powerful when used in this bar/beat resolution. Patience is required!

I bought my MR-8 mkII second-hand in 2009, and used it to produce my one and only CD in 2010. It worked very well for me, who had recorded on nothing but cassette players and old portable reel-to-reels. Mine has been in storage since 2010, and I just got it out to see if it still works. The power goes on, but nothing comes up on the screen. I'm supposing that the next thing to try is to buy a new compact flash disk.

I have a mic and this multitracker, I just want to record audio to my computer (ableton) and not purchase an audio interface (focusrite). Does this suffice as an audio interface and allow me to record any vocals?

I've had my MR-8 for years . I used to use it a lot but have drifted in to using my computer. I watched this to see if it had phantom power for a condenser mic before i dig it out of storage, I don't see that it does. Never used the midi port either.

Yeah, the lack of phantom power always seemed to be a drawback for the MR8. I use my computer as well, but overall I still prefer the hands-on quality of a table top recorder.

Heyo! just dug this up from an old relative's garage, I was born the year this came out and have no experience with a multi-tracker. I was wondering if I plug this into my DAW, will this work the same way an audio interface such as the Focusrite scarlett will? If I was to plug this into my DAW, and my guitar into the multi-tracker, will I have live audio in my DAW?

Hmmm, all very good questions. I really don't know. I have never tried interfacing the MR8 with a DAW. Maybe someone out there has? Maybe someone else can answer your questions? Anyone?

Hmmm. I have never used Zoom products, but if you are looking for small and battery powered (and cheap) they seem to be the way to go.

Nice review! Any way possible you can do another in depth video on how to bounce tracks and transfer files out to a pc for mastering? Maybe how to use all the functions? I’m currently stuck as I laid out a drum track on 1, bass track on 2. Going to use 3 and 4 for guitars. I’ll probably want to add another track for guitar leads and fill, then finally vocals. So I’m not to clear on how to bounce tracks and make more room for recording. I read the manual but it just doesn’t click for me. Can you help with a video for Dummies?😆

Thanks for watching! The only bouncing of tracks that you can do is two scenarios: tracks 1 to 6 bounced to tracks 7 and 8 (stereo). Or tracks 1 to 4 bounced to 5 and 6 (stereo). It's kind of limited that way. I am not sure if the later model had these limitations. I just may do a more in-depth video on the MR8 sometime in the future. Thanks for the suggestion!

You can bounce tracks 1-4 to 5 and 6. Then record over the first 4 tracks to complete 8 tracks. Then bounce tracks 1-6 onto 7 and 8 which will be the final left and right tracks. Now all that's left is to hiy the wav. Button next to bounce and it will combine tracks 7 and 8 into one track. Connect the mr8 to the computer with USB. Select USB from the menu, you should find the final track owner the song name, then 2nd mix, you can also export the individual wav. tracks to a software for mastering

Every time you record a new song, you can choose to record in normal or extended mode. You have to create a "new song" each time, and in the opening menu you name the song and choose normal or extended.

I am not familiar with the VF80. That's the one with the built-in CD burner, right? I always thought that was a very cool feature! If you don't have the manual, I am sure you could find it online.

I believe you can download updated versions from the Fostex website. I am not sure though if they still support the MR8.

Hi i am a bit of a novice so i may ask you some stupid questions as in when i record the manual said to use the effects and not the built in ones i need a y cable ,which is one cable going in to two ,which i have one of these cables but i never had much luck with it when i used it so it might be the wrong one ,so all i want to do is install my effects box to my fostex mr-8hd digital multitracker with out the y cable ,i can do this on other multitrackers but cant see a way of doing it on this model ,any help please ,good video by the way .Brian

Hi Brian. Thanks for watching. So, just so I understand correctly, you just want to run your effects box into the MR8? Does the effects box have stereo outputs? What I do is I run my instrument(s) into my effects box (Digitech S100), then I run an RCA patch cable from the left and right outputs of the effects box into the left and right inputs of the MR8. If you record your stereo signal to tracks 1 and 2 or tracks 3 and 4, make sure your left track (track 1 or 3) is panned hard left and the right track (track 2 or 4) is panned hard right. Not sure why they recommended the Y cable. Hope this helps!
