Just letting you know, there is no 'plastic' whatsoever in the frame of the TH-X00 (other than the nylon grommets you see in the adjustment mechanism and the nylon thrust washers between the yoke and driver frame.) The 'plastic' you talk of is actually a magnesium alloy, ridiculously lighter yet stiffer than any plastic. The build of the headphone is of very premium materials which is why they cost what they do: ALL the black parts are a special magnesium alloy, the inner headband is a stainless alloy, the adjustment mechanism is made from Duralumin (aluminum/copper/magnesium/manganese alloy historically used in structural aeronautical/aerospace applications), and of course you have the various woods for the cups of the different TH-X00 models. And the stock cable is a very quality cable as you know. And then there is the BIODYNA drivers. These are not cheaply made headphones...

You didn't talk about the tuning kit, or the pads, or their relation to the stock sound, or compare them to the other THX00, and you didn't even mention their INSANE bass. What was the point of this?
@Condor987
@Condor987 7 жыл бұрын
I know you said the tuning kit in them shouldn't change much but... I've never found them terribly sharp or at all fatiguing. Not in the least. I think the high's stop just short of being too much. Almost there, but never sharp. I describe them as detailed and pleasant, by no means sharp or fatiguing. But thanks for the review and your opinion!
@CamperIV
@CamperIV 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree. I think he should have reviewed the stock X00 because this was an extremely unrealistic depiction of the X00 that he did. I also have them and they are nowhere close as "extremely v-shaped" as he said. Sharp and fatiiguing? Hell no. Unless he has some extre sensitive ears or just got too used to the Sennheiser sound signature. No idea. But I was really disappointed with the review.
@BattleshipSailorBB63
@BattleshipSailorBB63 7 жыл бұрын
These are my PH's. And I agree, to me there is absolutely zero fatigue or sharpness. I have to politely disagree with DMS there. 4-6 hour sessions are normal to me. I purposely got the most V-shaped of the X00 variants, as these are the "fun" can counterpart to my daily driver Stax. And I do really like the ZMF pads and Pilot Pad. *edit* The highs did get sharp on me once playing them really, really, REALLY loud! Like over double my normal listening volume. But I also know I have a good bit of hearing loss (hey, old-man ears represent!), so it IS possible I just can't hear sharpness at my normal volume, even if it's there.

@BattleshipSailorBB63

The Lawton Tune-Up Kit. lawtonaudio.com/fostextuneupinstructions.html Per instruction from Mark Lawton, I installed the driver damping, but left out the cup damping to try like that first. And then I promptly procrastinated, and never tried it with the foam discs in the cups. Those tiny screws are a b**** with my blocky working-man's hands.

I totally disagree with his reviews regarding the sound quality of this purpleheart X00. This is one of the cans I've own that impresses me right out of the box experience and its not a V-shape sounding cans and the vocal is just right, not forward not recessed. I dont even use eq settings. This is one of my cans that i really enjoy listening to and it is not even fatiguing considering my age that im almost 50 :). Maybe he should have considered reviewing the stock X00. This is one of the well-rounded headphones that i own. Peace!

The alternative pads being used on this pair of TH-X00 are supposedly ZMF Ori pads. The tuning kit applied to his review pair of TH-X00 is the Lawton Tune-Up kit, but apparently they were not dampened fully due to owner preference. Here are few links to the mods if you are interested in pursuing them... Pads: www.zmfheadphones.com/pads-and-cables/omni-pads Tuning Kit: www.lawtonaudio.com/fostextune-up.html

Could you compare these with the fostex th610 ? I heard those are the least V-shaped from the fostex variants. I like a fairly neutral/slightly warm headphone that I can EQ in the low end when I feel like it. No overbearing highs since I am sensitive to them

I would call these my most "fun" headphones - I like them - they're a bit heavy for my taste though. I still go back to my HD 650 for most of my listening, Sen Momentum 2 over ears is my "leave at work" for their microphone convenience/cool looks factor off my phone and the Bose QC 35's for traveling and "on the move" (Yes Bose, sorry). My dad took my Monks. BTW, NFB 11 at home - most of the gear I've purchased came from your reviews so THANK YOU!

I'm with you on these. I love my hd650s and want to love my X00 Ebony but they are too fatiguing for long sessions. listening to metal and rock, they have recessed mids for sure. what I would do if I could find cans similar to hd650 but with more bass depth. EQing up 6db works a a little bit but feels like blasphemy. any recommendations? would the m1060 get me there?

Really?. That won't work for me. Heavy headphones give me a bad headache after about 30 to 45 min. I guess I'll stick to my hd650s for a while longer. Toying with getting a tube amp for them.
@malfunkt
@malfunkt 7 жыл бұрын
hey guys, yes the LCD2 very much is that headphone. I will say, you won't really find a true replacement. The LCD2, at least mine, are quite a step up - better transient detail, incredibly solid sound and some of the most linear extended bass out there. On the hand, they lose a bit of the magic the 650 has, while adding their own. LCD2, classic rock is incredible, as well as the best jazz recordings. Higher quality electronic music is amazing as is small chamber classical and vocal. But really, the HD650 still has everything, its bass is just a bit rolled off, and the upper-end is a bit muted to make it softer but still coherent. I'd recommend keeping the HD650 as your open, and adding a closed-headphone that will give you some contrast. While I consider other headphones to be better than the 650 technically, including HD700, HD800, LCD2, LCD3, SR-007 etc, they still aren't the 650. It really is that good, regardless of price.
@jalsarrelevantchaos8817
@jalsarrelevantchaos8817 7 жыл бұрын
malfunkt Are there any closed headphones that you would recommend? I know they are a lot harder to find that aren't boomy or have killer treble. I have a set of Sony MDR-1A for my phone. They can be a little boomy depending on the source but the highs never try to kill me.

I love my Purplehearts and mostly agree with DMS's assessment, however - I don't hear fatiguing at all. I would find it very helpful when a reviewer describes a specific attribute of a pair of headphones, if they could pair that attribute with a specific track they're listening to that brings out that attribute. I think it would really help clarify what they're hearing and what is meant by something like "fatiguing highs", "recessed mids", or "veiled vocals". Zeos does this, he's described using Mountains from the Interstellar soundtrack to reveal dynamic range, and that's perfect. But I appreciate the review. No headphone can be perfect. The best you can hope for are finite strong qualities, but always at a cost in another area. I guess it's just the physics of speaker design. Although I don't hear fatiguing, I come away from this review by DMS with a strong idea of the general attributes of this headphone that I "mostly" agree with. Good job, DMS! Thanks for reviewing my second favourite pair of headphones.

@@DMS3TV I understand it's an old review, but I wouldn't call it a crap headphone. I think there's an inherent issue with headphone reviews. Sound is subjective and depending on what you're using the headphones for it, it can influence what preferred signature one may prefer. I wish reviewers would be more neutral and highlight who might like the headphones, rather than just give their own subjective take. I personally have liked the Fostex ebony, and throughly enjoyed this purpleheart model as well. For a V-shaped they do everything really great. It's hard to find a complaint unless you really want something with an emphasis on detail, soundstage, and neutrality.
@DMS3TV

I had the ebony and sold them due to their built, it was loss fitting and one ear cup fell off due to the tiny screw that hold the cup to the headband snapping.
