What do you think of Massdrop? I just bought the HD6XX and they have an estimated ship date of Sept 17th! Eek. I think I'd rather spend $100 more and get them 3 months sooner. Are the headphones of less quality? Some people scoff at Massdrop but most people seem to like them.
@metal571
@metal571 6 жыл бұрын
6XX is exactly the same as a 650. You pay less because of the bulk buy nature and the long shipping times. Up to you if it's worth it over a real HD 650, but they're the same in sound. I've heard both already

Great, thanks for the reply. I think I'll get the 600's on Amazon for $286 and have them next week. From what I hear from you and others I might like those better. I need these for mixing mostly acoustic instruments and vocals with some hand drums/percussion and the occasional virtual instrument. What would you recommend as the best sounding, most isolated tracking headphone?

My first pair broke at the cup brackets. That part is made of magnesium which is strong, light, and brittle. Massdrop replaced without question, even knowing that I broke them. The replacement pair came with the wires all twisted up between the cups and the Y split, I let them know and they're replacing the second set. Massdrop stands behind their products and warranty, I recommend buying straight from them if you're getting these.

100% agreed on this review. I highly recommend the ZMF pilot pad to anyone who finds the TH-X00/TR-X00 headband to be uncomfortable. The ZMF pilot pad paired with Dekoni Elite Sheepskin pads make the TH-X00 probably the most comfortable cans I've ever worn.

The one on your head are the best brand for headphones! These fostex are all very bass heavy headphones. I have spent a month here in Japan and listened to all of them and it is really too much in all of them. And the gold liquid highs on the ATH X series?? Pure heaven.

Hey Metal, hope you are well. Got a K371 that i might start using for the office, sound great especially for $150! I'm considering getting a used pair of these (if i can get my hands on one lol) for home enjoyment because they seem so cool and different like you said. I definitely get the impression that they are more of a fun headphone and go really well with hip hop and electronic, and are best for those genres, but i don't listen to a lot of that. would you say that they are still good for things like older metal, rock and jazz? The resolution is still there and good for the price? I love warm headphones and I'm not super picky either, would just like to hear your thoughts, thanks!

I was 100% sure that you would love the Th-X00. I wanted to recommend them for you a while ago, but I forgot. Seems like there is some telepathy :D Fun fact is, it is not only a good upgrade from the A900x, but also from the M50x. Smoother midrange, better soundstage, and overall better performance. Except the cable! I do not fuss over cables like Zeos, but I really hate this thing! I personally have the purpleheart, I bought them because they look gorgeous. But it was a bit too bassy, so I searched for a solution and finally found it: I use the Denon D2000 pads, which are more comfortable, and tame down the bass, and I added half ply of toilet paper to compensate the treble - wich comes up naturally, if you reduce the bass. Now it sound awesome! Currently this and the K712 are my daily cans, and I love them both for different reasons.

How is the detail retrieval on it? Like when listening to live acoustic studio session rock, or fast intricate guitar solos for rock? I know you mentioned "good for metal music", and that is saying something... but does it ever sound 'confused' when there's too much going on in the mix?

Thank you for explaining the treble peak and sharing your EQ. I own the EMU Teak which is obviously similar; I love the headphones in their stock form, but I did find a similar experience to you. When I listen to certain trap/rap or EDM genre tracks, if there's like a drum clap or a hi-hat it makes me wince/trigger a blink reflex when I crank the volume on my amp in order to extract that juicy bass these headphones have. I was wondering where in the FR that was happening, and the 10k peak seems to tame it quite a bit. I used to have the same Schiit Stack you did (Magni 2 Uber/Modi 2 Uber) but the Modi recently crapped out and I moved to a Topping L30/E30. The L30 is really nice for IEMs and low impedance/high sensitivity headphones like these Fostex/EMUs. The L30 has three gain settings of -9, 0, and 9 db, and I'm able to get the perfect volume control and sound on the -9 low gain setting. I normally only use that -9 db for IEMs, but for these it works great too. These headphones really don't need much to drive them at all like you said. Great review, if these Fostex Ebony weren't so coveted/expensive on the used market I'd definitely buy a pair to try them out. Thanks again

I ended up retiring with the new JDS Atom DAC and amp stack, mainly because I know I can completely trust their amazing support. I heard the Teak, it's more forward in the upper mids where electric guitars sit but does have some of that same treble peak and shimmer, similar if not the same driver as these
@antiscrub
@antiscrub 3 жыл бұрын
@@metal571 Yeah I know I'm kind of gambling with the Topping setup. If it ever goes bad even if it's within warranty, it won't be worth it to get it fixed since the shipping alone will cost too much. But the L30 seemed like such a nice amp for my use case (IEMs/high sens cans). I wanted to go with the JDS Labs Element II but it seemed like it had slightly too much juice for IEM usage. I guess I could just lower the preamp gain in Peace. Is that you do that with your higher sensitivity cans? Schiit's customer service was less than stellar, they basically told me to fix the Modi 2 it would've costed $50 + my own shipping. At that point I might as well buy a Modi 3. Would you say JDS is better with their warranty service?
@metal571
@metal571 3 жыл бұрын
JDS was awesome, my Atom amp had a slight channel imbalance and they got back to me in 5 minutes by email and didn't even ask for my serial number to fix it, even though I bought it used. Crazy. Element II I've tried at home, it has plenty of fine tuning on low gain so IEMs will be fine, no preamp reduction needed on the EQ

Just my the Ebony's in. They sound GREAT. Love the bass, very satisfying bass out of the box. I don't consider myself a bass head, but am a bass enthusiast. Now I want to get the Purple hearts (and Mahogany's of course for the trifecta, I have a sickness... I know!) and try that, "excessive" bass... Maybe I am a basse head, and just don't know it yet! ;)

RojasTKD7 I would second what Metal states. The PH has a bit more bass but it bleeds into the mids and the highs can be bright. Mahogany and Ebony are very similar bass wise (they sound more alike than different) but the Ebony sounds cleaner and more defined IMO. The Ebony trumps all of them for mids and highs.......especially if you like Metal music. The Mahogany has a bit more “sparkle”up top but can get a bit fatiguing at times depending on what you’re listening too. The Ebony doesn’t exhibit that trait at all and has slightly more forward mids. Metal’s review here is what pushed me to give the Ebony a try and IMO he nails the sound signature spot on. I listen to a lot of Metal music and I absolutely love them.......they’re more favourite headphone in my collection (DT770 80ohm, HE-4XX)

i have to ask: do these punch above their price point? i sold my senn 650 (that veil exist to me) and sony z1r (too pricey for performance)...was also considering focal elear (until i read of that upper mid scoop, so they're a divisive set of cans) or the hifiman edition x v2 or beyerdynamic 1990...seeking a well balanced and detailed set of cans for rock, blues, jazz etc...a great all rounder but also with fab bass slam (that doesn't overdo it)

I just got my set today...wow. Metal's review is spot on. They sound great for rock, blues, jazz, hip hop...ect. These are my 8th pair of cans this year and they are already my favorite. Bass is amazing when present never forced. I love the bass of DT 770's but seems to always be present in all genres. These are so smooth. I stand behind Metal's review 100%. I love Zeos reviews but Metal's taste/reviews in headphones is spot on. Purchase these when they are available on Massdrop with no regrets.

Struggling between these TH-X00 and the LCD 2 Classics. Forgetting price, if you had to choose one for enjoyment listening and fewest issues, what would you go for. I have a decent amp and the Loci for equalisation (so can use that) but I'm really on the fence. Seems they both have great bass potential but worried the LCD 2 Classic might be too recessed in the mids comparatively? I tend to enjoy the sort of music you like from what you are saying. Thanks in advance!

LCD2 fazor is the one you want then. Big advantages there in stage and detail over the X00 due to the open nature. I'd still keep software EQ handy though. The Audezes EQ well but it's nicer to have a parametric on hand

@@metal571 As always super responsive thanks. There is a second hand pair of LCD 2 Fazors I have found and have the serial number so trying to find out what year they were made (or is this not so relevant with the fazor?) @@bradd5961 the owner is supposed to know. The safe thing to do is find one with the suspension headband. As long as it came with the headphone it's a 2018+ so is guaranteed to have the 2016+ driver rev. But Audeze is also supposed to be able to tell you when a serial # has been manufactured.
@bradd5961
@bradd5961 4 жыл бұрын
@@metal571 Just wanted to let you know and anyone else reading the comment that Audeze came through and confirmed the revision. Good job Audeze. FYI these are the revision dates from what they have quoted: The designations known as Rev1, Rev2 and Rev2f correspond to the following characteristics: -Rev1 (aka LCD-2.1): Original driver version -Rev2 (aka LCD-2.2): Thinner metal for traces with less mass for better sound resolution and high frequency response -Rev2f (aka LCD-2.2f): Thinner diaphragm film for additional mass reduction, better sound resolution and more bass definition; with Fazors for improved phase response, better high frequency extension and better imaging. To identify the Rev version of a given pair of LCD-2s, we use the serial number to determine two things: 1) their production date, with anything produced on or after June 16, 2011 being Rev2 2) serial numbers with the first two digits of 54 are Rev2f (meaning they have Fazors). BTW, I was surprised you suggested the LCD2 Fazor. Your review seemed more critical generally than the TH-X00 Ebony. Sounds like they are just another class up. I pulled the plug, so fingers crossed. Audeze also sell the comfort headband that can be swapped in which is nice. Thanks again.

I know this video is old and I'm still on the fence about Ebony and Purplehearts. Yes I know Purple's are more v shaped and have less bass extension but more bass than the Ebonies but I'm almost purely gonna be using these for EDM, pop rock just super bassy fun stuff. Would the Purples still be the best choice for me since I'm only gonna be using it for basshead enjoyment and mainly EDM? I know I'd love both but if the Ebonies had the bass of the purplehearts without the issues that's kinda what I want lol.

When comparing to the purplehearts, what was the main thing you didn't like in the sound the bass? I've heard the Ebony's probably have the least amount of bass.. I've listened to all the audeze's (basically all the TOTL phones at magnolia) and I realized the 300-400 dollar mark is pretty much my equilibrium point where I don't hear any additional benefits on headphones past that price point. Great review as always, hopefully you can do some A/B testing with all the fostex X massdrop stuff since they're probably one of the most popular cans in the price range as of now.
