I find this review kinda weird. The TH900Mk2 is a pretty damn good headphone. Are they bright? Yes, but not painful to me. The bass and subbass is unlike any other I've heard though, seriously. That trait itself is worth the price, imo. The TH-X00 is like an inferior version with a lesser smiley curve. The E-mu Teak however resembles the TH900 in many many respects. For the price on massdrop, I'd get the Teak as a gift or something - the price to performance is probably the best on the market.

Everything about this is odd. He seems very much in his own world. If one finds the TH900 MK2 too bright, there can be two reasons. 1. Your ears are crap, or 2 You run a bright amp. And grainyness for the TH900 MK2. Again, something in the setup is wrong. My guess is there's a lot of noise from the power line. There's NO grainyness in a pair of TH900 MK2.

@@AB-80X Lmao...Spoken like a true audiophile. Tyll has always stated his likes and dislikes in a headphone so everyone should know he doesn't appreciate headphones that are approaching overly bright which the TH900 mk2 are. There is also grain and if you aren't hearing it chances are you haven't heard anything better lacking the grain. A persons most used headphone will drastically influence their opinion of sound and if your most used pair of headphones are bright and grainy chances are you will argue they are not bright and grainy because you are used to it. Yes, the TH900 mk2 are good headphones but their sound does not equal their price. The price is for the extras. If you don't hear the grain I am happy for you. Hopefully it has saved you money preventing you from upgrading.

3 years late. But the TH900 is bright, and tbh it's wonky. That's why the TH610 pads were the better pads on the TH900. TH-X00 is the same level as the Teak, but the X00 sounds slightly more natural. Teak would be the best bass headphone under $1000 next to the X00 Ebony, the higher-end would be the TH900 with 610 pads.

I still like my D5000s, even with the shortcomings Tyll mentions and I agree with. There's something very engaging in their delivery once my ears have adjusted to them: so fluid and liquid, save for the occasional treble peak. I will never get rid of them. That said, I will keep an eye out for the E-Mu Teak's, once they are affordable :)

Love mine. They aren't perfect, but they are musical and romantic. Tyll's ears are Tyll's ears: he prefers the Oppo PM1s, which to my ears were dry and technical. Everybody has to listen for him or herself!

I modded my TH900 a long while back to fix the sound signature to be far less bright and more to my liking; however, I also was not fond of them before modding them and was curious about your suggestion of using the TH610 pads. I got my pair of pads in today and reversed the mods I did to the headphone to return it to how it was stock and switched to the TH610 Pads as suggested. I was rather surprised that they made the headphones sound more to my liking than expected; however, they were still no where near as good as my original mods. So I spent the last 4 hours doing tweaks here and there, and I found out that I can make them sound even better than my original mods by using the TH610 pads with only a fraction of the mods I had before. It's actually quite simple and anyone who has these could do it to improve the sound to still have great bass, but also be more neutral and bring the vocals out more. If interested, all you have to do is take off the pads and adjust the foam discs positioning inside as well as use the TH610 pads. Moving the foam discs inside changes the sound signature a lot more than you'd expect. There's an "Th900 Ez mods" on head-fi that goes into detail with what each position does. I also added a bit more dampening, but I wouldn't say that's a requirement...just a bonus. With the stock pads, I would consider it a requirement to help prevent sibilants. Hopefully this helps, and I'd definitely recommend giving it a shot @Tyll if you're bored and want to do a bit of testing. I know I had fun testing. I'll likely listen to the headphones quite a bit more now after combining these mods with the 610 pads.

Magnus Sura Something's definitely off here. The fact that he talks about grainyness in the TH900 MK2, makes no sense what so ever. They are VERY smooth all over the band. In terms of how smooth they are, they are actually on par with the Stax SR-009. That's saying something. Are they as good as the Stax? No not at all. But they are ridiculously smooth and transparent for the price.

just bought my th-610s from headroom yesterday (I live in bozeman) and I'm really happy with them. They definitely are a little aggressive in the highs, but I feel that they don't sound harsh like the th-900s. I have unique melody miracles which have a far flatter response, so these 610s will cover the times when I want that sharper sound.I can't imagine wanting any more bass honestly, I think I wouldn't be a big fan of the massdrop version.
@bertreviews
@bertreviews 7 жыл бұрын
I have the th900 headphones, along with several other flagship headphones. I find them neither harsh not aggressive as Tyll does. Was curious however about Tyll's suggestion to try them with the 610 pads. I switched the pads and after many hours of listening to different music on different amps, I have to say this - I heard NO discernible difference. The only difference was that the 610 pads were far less comfortable than he original th900 pads, I switched back to the originals and am happy. I've been watching Tyll's reviews for many years and sometimes I agree with him, sometimes I completely disagree. One thing I've noticed is that he is very sensitive to any kind of brightness. He likes headphones that are usually considered dark or on the dark side overall. Keep this in mind because we do not all hear the same way.

I agree! Bakoon pairs very well with the TH900, and if you like tubes the Zana Deux (Super) by Eddie Current is marvelous with TH900. Well, I finally got some Emu Teaks. Not so easy to find, and they haven't been on MassDrop for a while now. Will give them a really good listen for a few weeks and compare them to the TH900, and report back here with my findings. First impressions are good so far.

So I have both the E-MU Teak and TH-900 and here are my impressions. The E-MU is a fine headphone, and I agree with Tyll that it is very "liquid" sounding. If you are sensitive to highs and don't like bright headphones like Tyll, you will probably enjoy the E-MUs very much. The E-MUs are more laid back than the TH-900 and the midrange on the E-MUs is less withdrawn; they are slightly less V-shaped. While less bright than the TH-900, the EM-U Teaks are not dark-sounding headphones. This is a good thing to me, and is always my primary concern with Tyll’s reviews, as he tends to like darker sounding cans. There is nothing wrong with that, except that not everyone necessarily shares this preference. The TH-900s sound like fully open headphones with their wide, expansive soundstage. The EMU-teak soundstage is small and narrow in comparison. This difference in soundstage is quite significant and you will notice it immediately. To me, the round ear pads of the TH-900 are more comfortable than the ear-shaped pads of the E-MU Teaks. The TH-900 has a much, much better cable. The E-MU Teak cable seems very cheap in comparison, but of course you could have it replaced with a better quality, aftermarket cable if you wish. Personally, and this is just my opinion - and please take note that I am not sensitive to highs or "brighter" headphones like Tyll is - I prefer the TH-900. The EMU-teak is great, but it is just not in same league as the TH-900. Both have good bass. However, the bass clarity and extension of the TH-900 is world-class (some would say, addictive) for a dynamic headphone, better than the E-MU's. Overall, the sound clarity, openness, airiness, sense of space, precision, instrument separation, build quality, cable and especially the soundstage of the TH-900s are superior to the E-MU Teak. The E-MUs offer a less wide sounding (some people would call this “intimate”) and relaxed listening experience. The Teak wood cups of the E-MU's sound great and help give them than "liquid" sound, but they are somewhat fragile in that they are prone to some warping and in the worst case cracking in dry weather conditions - not so with the TH-900. You should not have to place headphone cups in a plastic bag with a wet rag so that they will fit properly - this is drawback to me of the E-MU Teaks. However, you get a lot for what you pay for with the E-MU Teaks, they are a great value. The TH-900 is a flagship headphone; the E-MUs are more of a middle of the range but still very highly capable headphone. This does not mean that the E-MU Teaks are not fun to listen to - they most certainly are, I enjoy their sound and I am happy I have them. I am by no means faulting the EMU-Teaks with this review, these are great headphones. Both headphones use a bio-cellulose membrane in their drivers which I really love - this gives them an "attack" on notes which is very organic, reminiscent to me of when I heard the Sony R10. (Neither are as good as the R10, but the "attack" is similar) I also believe that amplification plays a role. Some amps can definitely help the TH-900 sounds less bright (if brightness is an issue for you) and bring up the midrange or the TH-900 (if the V-shape is an issue for you). In my opinion, Tyll's outright dismissal of the TH-900 (“these suck”) is simply unfair, and has more to do with his personal sound preferences than with the capabilities of the headphone, which are extraordinary in my opinion and which many other people enjoy. I have always said that people can give their opinions on headphones, but ultimately it comes down to YOUR individual preference. Most headphones reviews (including this one by me) simply describe the preferences of the individual listener. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and this is never more true than with our listening preferences. If you can listen to both before you buy, especially on music you love, do so. Always trust your own ears, and go with what YOU think sounds good!

I bought E-mu Teak following the video and measurement... I think it's a wise decision. Thanks. But by the way I tried to investigate in depth, is it possible that the 900 does contain the same driver? It turns out that you can see someone who has opened all the headphones in the family and indeed you see a big difference in the membrane structure of the 900 compared to everyone else. In the 900 the magnet is significantly thicker. So maybe not all of them have the same drivers. At least not in 900. Unless you tell me something I don't understand

Is there a Japanese or American headphone you could recommend? (non German or Austrian). My housemate has the Sony MDR1AM2 but these are a little bass heavy unequalized I have the Audiotechnica MSR7b and they are a little lacking in mids and a little tiring unequalized. Is there a neutral headphone with very soft bass (I don't like bass) with good mids and treble that is Japanese or American you recommend that is for very comfortable for large heads (low clamp force). I'm considering Creative Aurvana SE (Fostex), Denon 2000, OOX ebony. What do you recommend under $500 used that doesn't need amplification? I prefer closed or semi-open like this with a big soundstage. There are so few good comfortable lightweight headphones with low clamp force!!!!!!!! Meze doesn't fold. Koss too easy to break. Grado too open. Focal not portable (except maybe the Listen). Aeon too odd looking. I seriously think I should just get some JBL 650s lol. Something neutral and harman tuned. Am I smoking something?

Saeed Alghamdi Thank you, I think the TH600 (cant speak to the new 610) are quite close, but a little more neutral, though also more grainy. The TH900 has a "nicer" sound, but is also slightly more extreme, thus the TH-600 doesn't suffer quite as much from the sibilance I mentioned (that I think is what Tyll was disliking here). So overall, considering how much cheaper they are, they are a great option if you want a different headphone, but still want a cheap way to get some of the Fostex magic on the side - which to me is the fun, energetic, aggressive sound - this trend towards making them more soft, rounded and neutral is a fools errand as far as i'm concerned :)

I am not an audiophile but I have always thought that Tyll's evaluations were very objective and analytical (as much as can be when evaluating audio) but this one blew me off my chair. His evaluation of the HD900 was anything but analytical....'makes me want to knock them off my head.' And that is all he had to say. He has always shared even his critical comments so this one bothers me especially when I see so many other respected reviewers saying they are one of the best. I am really confused about this review and makes me question his other evaluations. .

If you buy TH-600 for neutrality I'm certain you're a drug addict, there is no other way anyone can end up with a TH-anything for neutrality.

When buying closed cans, you're not really looking for soundstage.

I was comparing TH-X00 with D-5000, TH 600, and TH 900. I own or used to own all of them. TH-X00 has the smallest soundstage among them. Closed cans can have soundstage. You probably haven't heard one.

iamleo Huh? Yes I have heard plenty of closed cans and no, none of them could ever equal the soundstage of an open can, even one with small soundstage like the HD 650. Soundstage just isn't one of the most important characteristics of closed cans, which are usually sought after for their intimate, in-your-face sound. And congrats on owning biodyna cans. You're the only one who has ever heard them. The TH-900 is side vented, which technically doesn't make it fully closed. That and the peaky treble probably contribute to the impression of soundstage.

Uh, my TH-600s have a better soundstage than a lot of open cans, HD 600s included.

lickmygloves Well, I haven't heard the TH-600 but I did demo the Denon D-5k a while back and I recall the soundstage being quite cramped. The rest of the closed backs I tried (ATH-M40x, my modded Fostex T50RPs, Brainwavz HM5, Sennheiser HD-25, Beyer DT 770 off the top of my head) all had a small stage. And for the record, the HD 600 soundstage is relatively small for an open can (haven't tried the 400S). Especially when compared to the HD 800, which has the largest soundstage I've ever heard. And again, the TH-600 also has side vents. That contributes to the soundstage by a lot, and makes them not completely sealed.

@@Lost1ntheSauc3 I bought. So sound is clear and dynamic. bass is good full but not good texture or detailed as audeze lcd 3, lcd5. vocals on fostex is distant worst I heard, soundstage is small, imaging is bad. I was wondering why those are 1500$. Now you can buy hifiman he r10 which is better for 200$. Maybe the way it was build because they use Japanese betula grossa. It looks very beautiful but sound is worth 200-300$. It's a collectable headphones for looks and very comfy. 33/100 sound 92/100 looks
