Today on The Sword and The Trowel, Tom Ascol and Graham Gunden talk about the "He Gets Us" campaign and the two most recent ads that played during the Super Bowl. They unpack the ads and discuss how they miss the real Jesus and the whole Gospel. Are these ads helpful? Does Jesus really "get us"?

Indeed, no repentance mentioned..no true Gospel stated...which in fact is what our Lord preached. Of course, who would quote Jesus Christ in our progressive churches? So sad😔

Would you listen to Russell Moore's Sermon on the Mount, or would you write it off as "weak, liberal talking points that don't work anymore?"

Not being a football fan I didn't watch the Super Bowl but had seen various comments on Facebook about the ad. Thanks for exposing the faults of it and promoting the true Gospel.

I noticed that all the people that have destroyed Christian buisness are not washing the feet of the lives they have tried to destroy 😢

Thank you for tackling this total perversion of the Word. People are lovers of self and want an impotent Jesus subservient to them. My heart breaks to see so many willful sinners that celebrate their sin and want to cling to these false images that dishonor God and God's Word. So many are on the wide road of death and destruction and revel in their sin while leading many astray.

Makes me think of Psalm 50:21, "You thought that I was just like you..."

That is a very powerful psalm. Thanks for the reference. I've noticed that just among us humans people tend to think others are like them. That is why nice people think others have good motives when they don't. Also, evil people assume others are also evil and therefore it is okay to rip them off. But back to message of the psalm, to think Almighty God thinks like us is flabbergasting.

@@SirBlackReeds Psalm 50, beginning at verse 16 But to the wicked God says: “What right have you to declare My statutes, Or take My covenant in your mouth, Seeing you hate instruction And cast My words behind you? When you saw a thief, you consented[c] with him, And have been a partaker with adulterers. You give your mouth to evil, And your tongue frames deceit. You sit and speak against your brother; You slander your own mother’s son. These things you have done, and I kept silent; You thought that I was altogether like you; But I will rebuke you, And set them in order before your eyes. “Now consider this, you who forget God, Lest I tear you in pieces, And there be none to deliver: Whoever offers praise glorifies Me; And to him who orders his conduct aright I will show the salvation of God.”

I think the point of "He gets Us" is that if every Christian who watched the Superbowl gave 1$/day for a year we could shelter about 200,000 homeless families in America for a year. This precipitates the question, what is the better expression of Gospel, to get about doing it or to sit around in our conclaves and pick apart the apparent waste of means?

In context of Jesus washing feet was exactly what He told Peter; “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, dexcept for his feet,1 but is completely clean.” Jesus washes the feet of those whom He has redeemed and cleansed already.

So this whole He Gets Us movement is sort of spearheaded by Max Lucado, whose church is just a couple miles from my house. I have several relatives that attend there. Evidently, his church never preaches about repentance and very rarely even talks about salvation. There is this general megachurch notion that if you’re there, you’re probably a Christian. Every one is quite friendly and welcoming, but all sermons are very general and vague when it comes to salvation. Lucado used to be a Church of Christ pastor, but that limited the growth of his church. So he dropped many of the COC distinctives and got as vague as possible about most doctrinal things. This He Gets Us movement is just his church doctrine put on a national stage: a vague, feel-good Jesus that doesn’t really confront sin.

Americans that have constitutionally conservative political views have for years relied on Mormons, Jews, Roman Catholics, and atheists to articulate those views on television or internet videos. We just don't have that kind of money. And when there are finally some Christians that put money together to run an advertising campaign, they go the route of presenting an altered and distorted view of Jesus, and a Gospel that is full of holes. They could have ran an advertising campaign that taught the truth about abortion. They could have ran an educational program to advocate for preserving a free-market economy. But they chose something to suit their views, their philosophy. The message they promote does not surprise me. The waste of money that could have actually been used to save lives is infuriating.

Satan is alive and well. Who else would use the image or name of Jesus to deceive? The sheep hear the voice of Jesus. The dead hear the voice of their father, Satan.

Christians should take advantage of this ad for evangelism purposes. Its a talking point that we can use to point these people to the Jesus of the Bible, rather than the Jesus of "He Gets Us". Do I agree with He Gets Us campaign? No. Can we use this campaign for the Churches advantage? absolutely.

This ad was basically geared towards you. When is the last time you reached out to someone coming outside of an abortion clinic? Or a gay person? Or anyone that didn't look like you and show them love? Love doesn't mean immediately pouring some heaping coals on their head of telling them they are going to hell all the time. I think that is the idea of this ad. The fact that some Christians are so outraged speaks volumes.

Jesus loves us all but HE didnt want us to stay where we are but rather transform our lives and save us from our oppression, sins, and perversions - HE came to set the captives free not to allow them to stay stuckwhere they are - our message is to be the same - be vessels for transformation - in alignment with Scripture - the Scripture does not compromise - Jesus was radical with anyone who twisted the Word - predominantly the arrogant pharisees - they were carnal - we are to reach everyone and help pull them out of deception - that isnt done with foot washing - Jesus didnt wash the feet of just anyone on the street- He washed the feet of believers, - HIS disciples - our mission is to love and spread the TRUTH of the true Jesus, not a false one -this ad limits who HE is - He is not just a loving social justice guy, but our Lord and Savior - He transforms our lives to live in alignment with HIS Word. Unfortunately the church also has stayed stuck in the seeker sensitive model. That's not the Gospel -Many pastors have not taught the true Word so we don't even know what the Scripture actually says about who Jesus is.

What speaks volumes is those who love to throw the church under the bus while ignoring the fact that most churches regularly help pregnancy centers with money, diapers, clothing, food, while others help anyone and everyone who shows up to their doors with a need. Get informed and do better. You engage in slander when you willfully and ignorantly claim churches are not doing certain things that they've been doing likely longer than you've been alive.

why does everything need to be a debate about whether it is orthodox or not? Why does every little podcast and small pastor feel the need to opine about things that are not in their lane, things someone else has deemed important, things they may or may not do themselves? Maybe just take a pass and stop the "debates" about orthodoxy..... or not.
