Four Blue Inks

This is the first in a series of video reviews of some of the blue inks that I have and use regularly. The inks reviewed in this video are: Pelikan Royal Blue 4001; Waterman Serenity Blue; Parker Quink Washable Blue; Private Reserve American Blue.

Great job, Bluebeard! 💙🧔‍♂💙 I almost did a spit-take when you came back with that blue beard. And... I love these inks, but Private Reserve American Blue is my favorite among them all. I'd be interested to see what you think of Pilot Iroshizuku Kon-Peki, it's my absolute favorite blue of all time!

Thanks. I will be reviewing Kon Peki in my next video, which I am just starting to work on. I really like the Private Reserve American Blue but when I got the Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuyu Kusa that I reviewed in my last video the American Blue might have been bumped down a notch.

Thank you for this most interesting video. Got 3 of the 4 inks featured and have different colours with Private Reserve but not the blue. Of late I’ve acquired a clutch of super fussy pens. The two inks that work best for me are Private Reserve in general and Waterman’s Serenity Blue & Tender Purple (& yet not their Mysterious Blue in these particular pens). So Waterman’s Serenity Blue and PR inks generally, get my vote. Thank you again.

The Waterman Serenity Blue is a beautiful ink I keep in several pens and the Private Reserve American Blue is one I am turning to more and more. So many blue, so little time.

The first three just look like they are the same pigment, that blue print blue. The fourth definitely does look like a different hue to the other three.

Yes, they appear very close in the video but are not quite as close in person. The Pelikan Royal Blue has a slight purply tint to it while the Parker tends to be a bit paler than the Waterman. The Private Reserve is a deeper blue.

😂🤣 after taking a sip of coffee ☕️ Nice video...I do like the waterman bottle cap for that sound it makes with glass upon opening and closure I find that my notes written with Pelikan, Parker and even Montblanc Royal blue ink fade away over time ...which I do find disturbing Though my favourite are teal inks like the Lamy amazonite, Dimine marine Hoping to see more ink colour reviews from you

Thanks. I haven't notice the fading with the Pelikan (yet) but the Parker does seem to lighten as time goes by. I will be reviewing more inks and in fact I am working on two new videos at the moment. I hope to post one of them in a week or so.

I love Private Reserve, but their inks bleed a lot on less than premium paper - even paper that other inks don’t bleed through as much.

Yeah, that is sometimes an issue but I agree they are nice inks and I have several that I use regularly. I use TWSBI inks successfully on regular school loose-leaf paper everyday and no issues with bleed.

Great Video! Not sure if it is the certain bottle of ink I have, but I recently moved from a Waterman to Parker ink and now my fountain pen dries out quicker and has inconsistent ink flow.

Thanks Black Bird. I have used both inks and changed back and forth in the same pen with no issues. Have you tried a thorough cleaning of the pen and the converter (if you're using one)? Anytime I have had problems like you describe, I have always found a good cleaning usually eliminates them. Or, as you suggest, it might just be that bottle of ink. Good luck with it.

Chalk me up as another person who is a fan of American Blue. Admittedly I am biased against blues that lean toward purple (I really don't know why; I love purples that lean toward blue). I avoid royal and sapphire blues. American Blue is a true blue, IMO. Unfortunately, American Blue has a tendency of too much showthrough/bleedthrough compared to many others. But it is not alone in this. Many other similarly-shaded inks like Diamine's Blue Velvet and PR's DC Electric Blue are prone to show-/bleedthrough as well. PR's American Blue _fast dry_ formula is less prone to bleedthrough but paradoxically takes longer to dry, in my experience. It is a darker shade of blue, somewhere between the standard formula and Diamine's Oxford Blue. These days my top 5 true blues are (in no particular order) PR's Electric DC Blue, Monteverde's Horizon Blue, Diamine's Skull & Roses, Diamine's ASA Blue, and Robert Oster's Soda Pop Blue. If I need a business/legal-friendly waterproof blue I reach for R&K's Salix... although that's a different shade from all the rest.

American Blue is certainly a wonderful blue. It is the blue currently in my journaling pen and I am enjoying it. So many blue, so little time.

Blue mountain coffee 😂 My favorite blue is still bay state blue. These all look gorgeous though. I hope I never get baystate blue in anyone’s beard though.

I really like the video , I have one question , here in my rural village or nearby city only Parker ink is available ! , So can I have some knowledge about Parker Blue Ink , does it fade with time or not ....and Again Appreciation and Love from INDIA 🇮🇳

Thanks Sohit. I have only been down this rabbit hole for a little over a year so I have not experienced any issue with any of the inks fading noticeably. @@sohitghangas2836I don't know how late of a response is this, but yes quink does fade with time, but not as much as you would worry about. I have been using it continuously for 3 years and it's my favourite blue ink, very safe, well behaved and a work horse. The only downside is it is extremely vulnerable to water and just can't stand a drop of water or sweat.

Hi Muhammed. The pen is a glass dip pen I purchased on Amazon. I would give you the link but this specific pen is no longer available. However there are still lots of glass dip pens listed on Amazon. Hope that helps. If not, let me know.

Not sure which other ink you are refering to, All four are good inks, so to say one is "better" than the others would be difficult. If you are asking which is my favourite, I'm not sure that is any easier. It really depends on which one I'm using at the time. I enjoy them all. The Waterman is certainly a good inkand one I use regularly. Hope that helps.

Yeah, it was but by the time I realised I had my cup in the wrong hand I had already washed all the blue out of my beard and didn't really want to put it back again. I'll do better next time, promise.
