I hope this doesn’t sound completely awkward, but I have been struggling with feeling like myself and my style for years and your description and tips at the end were so spot on, especially on creating boundaries and the sensuality of clothing, that I got a bit emotional. Thank you for this! This was so much more helpful than any other style systems were I inevitably end up obsessing about whether clothes “suit my type” or are “appropriate”.

I felt the same way - the struggle between openness and the need to create boundaries, not feeling right in overly feminine clothes, etc. - so relatable and profound. It makes me reflect on why and how I’m hiding in my clothes, but embracing the sensuality of aesthetic and texture for comfort and soothing.

I am so shocked by how accurate I feel this is for me! And it went so beyond outfit tips. The boundary thing is so spot on, like a lack of want to draw too much attention in as an act of protection. Not wanting to wear too much makeup to reveal expressions. And it is all to do with not wanting to be TOO enveloping (the existence of creepy men have not helped this tbf). But it is deffo about unlearning the 'rules' that don't suit a left down and then dressing for oneself again. Also, its interesting how most of these women are brunettes!
@StyleThoughtsbyRita

Yeah the existence of people who take advantage of your energetic space or violate your being is one of the great motivations to build up a "tough exterior" which I find common for the left+down space. So glad you could relate 🌸 Lol about brunettes! I can definitely see many blondes in the left+down group but we aim more for some diversity in ethnicity and styling, forgot about hair color diversity this time 😄

@@StyleThoughtsbyRita You always do awesome diversity in these vids :) and celebs often change their hair colour anyway! selena gomez was very recently blonde too, though i love the darker hair on L/D. Other stuff that would be cool to see would be how each quadrant could do bridal looks, and also maybe an exploration of people who are the most fluid between the diff quadrants :) thanks for making such great vids!

Totally! Another thing is being comfortable in the clothes. For me that's key. I use to work with the students in a drama class and the teacher was asking if your character takes up large space or small space. Not the size of the character but the space they take up. Like a big person can take up a small space and a small person can take up a large space. And I feel like yes, if you put me in a frilly dress you know what you're going to get. Somebody like Alice from Alice in wonderland. I'm not a careful person. I'm energetic in my body and so I need clothes that let me move that way.

I definitely feel like I can express myself more comfortably among friends or when I’m out in public with someone I know! If I’m out in public on my own, I prefer to put up a ‘shield’ to avoid street harassment and unwanted attention (especially since I have a small frame, prominent curves, and I live in a big city). I’ll reveal less skin, wear less figure hugging clothes, and use a large tote bag that I hold in front of my body. It feels more comfortable to be unseen and unrevealing. But it also prevents me from connecting with strangers, so it’s difficult to find balance. I might experiment mixing sensual pieces with ‘tougher’ pieces (like a sundress + leather jacket). Thanks so much for the video!

Wow I thought I was right&down, and I think I hide out there a lot. But I think I may actually be left down. Definitely I know I’m a down, but I think I go between right and left and am kinda like the girl who needs to encorporate both sides, but I related so much to what you said about the dance between vulnerability and boundaries. And definitely I think the sensuality and feeling good physically is so important for me. I’ve always hated blazers or anything too restricting. Also I grew up in purity culture and was shamed a lot when my curves were on display.

I think it's fascinating how people are saying they feel more so at home in their quadrant than in their kibbe type. I think the quadrant really reflects the individual personality and expression and we can relate to that so much more. Also if your kibbe has never sat quite right perhaps because your essence is quite different. I think it could be a fascinating exercise to see for example a classic LD or tr RD (which I think I am!)

To be fair, it's silly to compare the two, because one is a body system that focus on your lines and this is an essence system that focus on your energy and style. Most of these systems are just conventions anyway triggered by confirmation bias
@margies735
@margies735 2 жыл бұрын
@@AmandaVieiraMamaesouCult I understand where you're coming from, I think there are some pre conceived vibes that come with the kibbe system ie gamine are always super cute and girly and tr is a femme fatale etc which may confuse ppl with the respective lines but not necessarily the personality and style of the stereotypes. This is where the 4 quadrants can be helpful in reflecting your style. I think these systems can be useful in finding your personal style with info on lines and essence and so on if that is what someone is looking for. I think it will be interesting to see the kibbe types within the quadrants that may have contradictory elements, which Rita is already doing!

The part about boundaries made me literally cry cause I finally felt understood. Basically my "conversation" with clothes is between having comfortable, enveloping, hiding clothes like big flannel shirts that still feel "touchable" and being drawn to super exposing styles such as strapless tops in silky fabrics and backless dresses

I was so lost as to which quadrant I was in until this video! I’m now fairly positive that I’m basically right where Lana Condor is- all of the back and forth you two described as far as trying to place her fits me to a tee, and being so close to the right and sorta close to the center in general explains why it wasn’t obvious at first :)

Also, I’m not sure if this is the case or not, but some of the things you said about her reminded me a lot of the sort of juxtapositions in style that people recommend for soft gamines. I wonder if the “Lana Condor placement” is a space with a slightly higher likelihood for soft gamines to inhabit?

Thank you Rita, your video is, as always, amazing. I would like to share a few clothing items I recently purchased and that I realize now perfectly fit the left down essence (maybe it helps some of you!): so, for feminine clothing, I have a sleek, very sporty t-shirt made of a thicker, stretchy material and with emphasized shoulders - but it's pink, with a glittery print. I think that's a nice take on feminity, that's not traditional, conservative or too cute, but rather sporty and sexy. I also got plateau sandals that are super comfortable to walk in and give me a 70s, kind of Hippie vibe. (They were second Hand, so second Hand Stores are a great place to look for unconventional, comfy clothes, even more so when you are trying out something new bc it's more sustainable!) Then I actually just ordered a short black tennis skirt, where there are shorts sewn into it - a great example for freedom of movement while also showing skin (I often feel very constricted and unhappy in sleek and sexy dresses and skirts, even though they look good on me in theory). Btw, now I also understand why I look good either in super short skirts/pants or super long ones, midiskirts make me look so stiff and trying too hard (I was really into vintage 40s and 50s for some time, but I just couldn't make it work for so many reasons). Other tips I have: I really hate wearing makeup and I also don't think it suits me, but I found a routine that works: I mainly just darken and brush my eyebrows, put a little bit of white, glowy eyeshadow under my brow and in the inner corner of my eyes and finish off with lipgloss. It's really minimal, but the darker brows give my face more contour and strength, so I like it (and it's easy to wash off). Then I realized that putting bobby pins into my hair also is too delicate and fuzzy for me, I prefer to braid my hair back in a French braid, preferably only one large one, or smaller ones if your hair is shorter. I also don't look good curling my hair, as it is naturally straight and I think you can tell whether the curls are natural or not, and natural is usually the safe choice ("safe" as in "I'll look great" rather than "comfort zone") I also like to keep my nails unpolished, but nails and skin and hair well taken care off, otherwise I quickly look frumpy. Last but not least, if I wear jewelry, it's earrings or larger earstuds, bc they bother me less than bracelets or necklaces, and they are easy to find in less delicate styles, while still often being quite comfortable to wear. That's it for now, sorry for the long comment. I would be happy if someone shares other tips they have! Love you, guys!

Fascinating stuff, again! (And *beautiful* manicure). It's interesting how some people, it seems, can do a bit of mix-n-match left and right - which seems to be a different thing than actually 'moving'. Does that suggest complexity of temperament? The other thing of special interest to me was the 'moving up' with age. I'm 60 now, and I think I used to be a left-down (not far from right-down) and have moved upwards over the decades. I'd love to see you follow some public people from their youth to late age, see how they moved, eg Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, Katharine Hepburn.

Thank you very much for these amazing videos! Watching your introduction I could immediately put myself down into the "down" category, but I was troubled with left and right. I was pulled to right at first, simply because that is how I notice my vibe to go. Still, the right down styles just didn't speak to me. Now it clicked - I actually think my home base is at the left, but I've been dressing as a right my whole life! I wouldn't have thought the type of dressing makes this much difference! It also helped to contrast myself to a friend of mine who is clear-cut into the right+down category, and these styles suit and accentuate her just so well. And also how you said in the right+down video that left+downs sometimes dress that way to disappear... that we learn we need to shield ourselves from the world... as someone who grew up with a constantly body-shaming family, hiding myself away is the only style I know... so that definitely hit too close to home. I'm definitely one of those 90% who don't want to be seductresses, so I can be an outsider instead 😅 There definitely was a whole lot to take in in this video. I was actually initially more connected to the men's left+down and the focus on effortlessness and utility, than the sensuality of the women's system, but different aspects of bodily comfort do play a huge role in how I dress. What do you think about hiding by dressing up? I mean that creating a persona, some sort of a strong visual style, could be a way of hiding, so that a left+down person could try to hide by deliberately trying to dress more up? Sort of like wearing a mask.

Thank you! This was so helpful. Im very much outsider, but I do like some girly and cute elements ( with a mixture of tomboy and yang elements) I also like a mixture of natural makeup with fun colorful elements, sometimes bold, but def not sleek or contoured. Edit 3mo later: realizing I am closer to the up quadrant, kind of straddling the line. I dont think of myself as intimidating or dramatic in essence but other people describe me that way, and I do love maxi dresses and skirts that dont feel very down-left (depending: a flowy patterned hippy skirt is more approachable than a sleek black maxi dress.)

I also noticed that all of your Left-Down examples were brunettes. And I noticed that what these women all seem to have a kind of "smoldering" essence. The more "Right" they are in the quadrant the more subtle/banked down the smoldering quality is. Another thought I had as I watched this video that it would be interesting to see where you would place classic Hollywood icons like Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor, even Lucille Ball. And how did they manifest their personal best in clothes of their era?
@StyleThoughtsbyRita

As I wrote to someone else, it wasn't intentional about the brunettes! Sophie Turner and Natalie Dormer are two examples of non-brunette leff+down! 🌸 I think old Hollywood is fun and interesting so I will probably talk about that in the future 🦋

I really liked your discussion on Lana Condor. I think I might be the "leaning-right" version of where Lana is. I think sweetness/brightness comes first but I like to add a little bit of mystery or sensuality as well, but straight left outfits just don't really work for me. I feel like I'm one of those like ingenue types that can look like "way too sexy" easily when an outfit might even be modest on others. This system is really interesting and I feel like I have a better grasp of my essence after watching the series. I'm not sure where I am lines-wise but I'm finding that honoring my essence is more important for me.

First, it's so nice to see Menadj (spelling?) is doing so well. I was worried for you both! But now here we are. I've been waiting for this video because when you first started talking about the women's quadrants I was SURE I was left down. Most of my clothes are left down and I've worked hard to cultivate a left down, edgy aesthetic because I thought it was easier than being anything else. Then you started going around the quadrants, and when you got to right down, I was SHOCKED. I suddenly realized I could be totally right down. Right down clothes look so much better on me than left down, and I look so much better in them. I just didn't want to be right down because I thought it was more work than left down. So I held out one last hope...the left down video. The left down video was going to confirm I'm left down. That was my plan. But no. I am NOT left down. I'm right down. There's no greater truth for me at this moment than this. Right down. Thank you, Rita!

I love how you went deeper into the concepts of dressing for comfort and the different levels of vulnerability. I can definitely relate to that. I'm still unsure whether I'm right or left (definitely down) but I think I'm leaning slightly toward the left after this video. Although, I was wondering--how do you think a Kibbe classic (dramatic, soft, whatever) could create harmony with left+down essence? It seems like the essence of the classic style recommendations is focused on refinement, which in my mind doesn't totally mesh with being left+down.
@StyleThoughtsbyRita
@StyleThoughtsbyRita 3 жыл бұрын
I hear you but in that case I wouldn't focus on "refinement" but rather focus on element. meaning that your lines are not "too long", too wide/deconsructed, too sharp, and that your outfit doesn't have a clear "focal point" but is rather visually balanced throughout. I think this accommodates the need of the classic physically while allowing her to express her essence.

So, I haven't watched the left up video yet, but so far, I'm pretty convinced that I'm left down, leaning a little up and right, so the Seductress archetype. And yes, I have taken serious issue with being considered so seductive in the past, and I've literally shielded myself in long skirts, high necklines, oversized sweaters and totes - the whole nine yards. I'm also a Kibbe SN, (I'm 5'5) who has wanted to be a FN because I think they have a lot more of the intimidation factor that I really relate to. (Hence leaning up so much, I should think) this has cleared up so many things for me. Thank you. I'm off to watch the left up video now, to be really sure! 😃

Your videos are so amazing! I love these essences, and how poetic and deep you get with describing them. I’ve definitely been a right+down, but it’s been a couple years that I’ve been shifting/playing with more left+down as I’ve been honoring my sensuality. As a young child I felt super sensual, but after some events happened I left my body a lot, so now the return to celebrating my body has driven me to explore this other realm. I remember the day when I realized - oh (I’ll always love pastels but) damn I’m obsessed with earth tones now. I love the being seen / boundary lesson and how that applies to dressing and self expression. Being intentional and artistic in that way sounds so yummy.
