That was a wonderful lesson ... Changing the IV from major to minor in bar #4 sounds great, but why is that? I understand the II minor as part of a 2-5-1 sequence, but the IV minor goes to the I chord. How does this resolution work?

The 4 chord moves to the one because it has leading tones a nice and small step away, pleasant semitones that resolve well at the one chord. The min4 although out of key in a sense has stronger leading tones, with an extra semitone step that resolves to the one chord. A very Beatles, or Dylan move, and sounds great. Leading tones is the basic answer.
