He quotes Tino's manager as saying "we are going to talk, but let's get Origin out of the way." In other words, we haven't talked. Then he quotes a sponsor saying what he would LIKE to do. In other words, Rothfield doesn't claim that talks had been held, let alone have proof. And so when Gould says "we never talked", that is not contradicted in the slightest by anything Rothfield said. I hate both of them to be honest, but journalists really are the lowest form of life. Rothfield says that he called Lundy, who he considers a friend, and chats to him, then at the END of the conversation says that you've given me some nice quotes. What sort of "friend" calls someone to stitch them up like that? Journalist ethics require you to state up front that you are talking to get information for a published article. Not only has Rothfield the ethics of an alley cat, but he is is representing that a sponsor speaks on behalf of a club. They don't.

Because Laundy isn't aware of how the cap works. Gus is telling porkies because Laundy accidentally exposed either his (unbeknownst to him) attempt to rort the cap or because Laundy accidentally exposed a deliberate attempt by the doggies to circumvent the cap with a 3rd party deal.
