I live locally to affordable offroad and I am building my xj using g alot of thier parts. I also have a decent shop. Videos likes yours are great for me but bad for my wallet lol. I am currently stiffening my frame from front to back. Also 6.5 long arm! And possibly rear coilovers once I recover from long nights of fourwheeling! Thank you for the channel

Thanks for sharing. I picked up same angle long time ago. Lacked to motivation to complete install. May give it a try in the spring. Good job on your install.

Same, I should be able to do this myself so why not and save the cash and be more satisfied with what I made.

So, does anyone living in the salt belt do this? Here in the Midwest taking things to bare metal and creating places where snow/water/salt can hide seems completely nightmarish.

Weld-through primer works wonders. Look into it, you'll thank me later.

No need for weld through primer ? Good job btw.

I have never used the stuff before, but some sort of protection underneath would have been a good idea.

I want to do something similar on a smaller unibody car.
@MuddyBeards4X4
@MuddyBeards4X4 6 жыл бұрын
Do it! Pretty straight forward. Maybe use lighter material. I used 3/16 but honestly might be over kill. Most frames are prob not that thick
@ChasWG

So hopefully you used some sort of seam sealer. Why not finish the welds and close it up completely? It would only make it more solid and stronger than leaving all the stress on those welds. It also seems like a lot of places that water can penetrate between the frame rail and your stiffener. Leading to an eventual rusting out in those spots.

I have done a lot of reading on this topic and it seems like there was a consensus on forums like NAXJA that stitch welding on the un was important because the metal is thin and brittle. Large amounts of heat can really affect it structurally. I'm no engineer but I thought it made sense so stitch weld it is. The thing I do regret was not using some weld through primer......

ok the xj is not all one unit. the frame is laid first. the 2 floor pans are welded to the frame. then the body is welded to the floor pans. so not all one unit.

What long arm kit are you running?
@MuddyBeards4X4
@MuddyBeards4X4 5 жыл бұрын
I built it using some barnes enduro joints, a piece of 2x4 steel for cross member, and dom tube for the arms.

You guys are MIG’ing it - I would too if I had the option. All I have is a TIG and stick welder. Normally I’d TIG it, but I’m thinking if I use the stick welder I won’t have to remove all the paint from the undercarriage/weld points. I know stick isn’t generally recommended with thin material, but I think some thin 6013, welded on favoring the angle iron rather than the sheet, would be ok. Any recommendations?
@MuddyBeards4X4
@MuddyBeards4X4 4 жыл бұрын
I honestly dont have much experience with stick. But I know people use this process to weld stiffiners all the time. I think it would be fine if like you said, favor the thicker material

Whay good are those stiffeners if they're not welded to the floor?
@MuddyBeards4X4
@MuddyBeards4X4 4 жыл бұрын
Still adds strength to the rails..... also provides mounting for rock sliders, cross members, etc... most companies stiffiners do not attach to the thin sheet metal of the floor boards.

I think if your planning on tying in rock sliders, or cross members or even a cage it's pretty important to strengthen up the unibody.

There a company found that has an entire frame stiffening kit, front, mid, and rear, both sides, paid 254 + tax & shipping, fabbed my sliders, and rough country 4inch longarm for zj

Seems cheaper and less time consuming..to buy the mid kit for 180$..then the front for 80$..plus it’s one piece..less welding on the uni frame..
@MuddyBeards4X4
@MuddyBeards4X4 5 жыл бұрын
Definitely not cheaper but yes certainly less time. But using angle wraps the entire channel making it much stronger than a kit, and was needed for the crossmember I built. Buying kits is certainly easier but it is possible to diy and make it specifically for your builds needs.
