In this video I'll show you the best way to create a strong, flat roof dormer, and the techniques we use to make our lives easier when we're doing the work on the inside.
I show the things you need to know and also explain some of the reasoning behind why we've previously built bits the way we have.
Enjoy!

Bang those firrings on before you chuck those joists up. Save you a bit of time going back over them once they're up

Great job! Just wondering about the wallplate under the dormer rafters, looks like you just double two 7x2 together, frequently I see that built as flitch beam, i guess your engineer didn't spec one here?
@OfficeBoyBuilder

Yeah we were only asked to double up the wall plate. That's pretty standard. Flitch plates would typically be used if there were larger sliding/bifold doors being put in place

Nice brand new nail guns and levels , that dodged ? Timbers too close to chimney ? What you rafters are not? 6x2 laid down , this would not get signed off in our country ( England ) .

Is it really OK to notch out the joists at the steel end with those overcuts from the circular saw like you did??? Why not use a saw and cut them flush??? Leaving a horizontal cut there reducs the strength of the joist. Just asking not having a go, perhaps it is common practice???

It really isn't an issue - ideally everyone would have the time to cut them without leaving a little notch, but in all honesty it makes no real difference to the strength/integrity of the wood. That slit you can see doesn't pass through to the other side of the wood, because the blade is circular, so it's fine.

Notching out was common practice for years although now over in NI, BC tends to want 6x2 bolted to web of beam then joist hangars to support roof. 6x2 is also common practice for exterior walls. Strange how regs differ depending on location.

I was taught not to do this. Joist inside the web, with a second joist coach bolted to it, then hangers..
