Carlos Ghosn had 14 months in prison and house arrest in Japan to think about what he would say to defend himself when he finally had the chance. He used the time well because his press conference from his new home in Lebanon was a tour de force of truth. The former Nissan CEO, who saved the company from bankruptcy, fled Japan in a daring escape rather than risk a trial after months of ill-treatment. He scorched the former Nissan colleagues who turned against him, the prosecutors who interrogated him for weeks without counsel present, the Japanese legal system that assumes defendants are guilty, and the world press that often parroted what he called their “character assassination” against him. Ghosn-san took reporters, and a global video audience, step by step through the accusations against him as well as what he described as the motives of those who turned on him. His account that Nissan executives and Japanese officials worked together against him seems more than plausible and the closest that we will get to the truth as the Japanese media propaganda machine has started in full drive again- it is rare for Japan to ever to say sorry and admit it was wrong! We experience this all the time in our society in multiple situations. Ghosn-san highlighted that executives in Japan chafed at the growing power of France and French executives in the global car alliance that Mr. Ghosn had put together with Renault, Mitsubishi and Nissan. So they concluded that the only way to end the partnership, or at least assert greater control, was to get rid of Mr. Ghosn. Their weapon became Japanese corporate governance law, which as everyone knows is defined by its opacity. The details of Mr. Ghosn’s defense will be tested against the specific evidence as it emerges but there is probably none. One of his most compelling points concerned Nissan’s admission of guilt in Japan and they have been fined (!), after he was fired and arrested, to corporate disclosure offenses here. Yet in Tennessee in the U.S., where Nissan has been sued on similar allegations, the company claims innocence. Ghosn-san also made the common-sense point that none of this should have risen to the level of a crime. It should have been settled in the boardroom. This is a HUGE point and what the majority of academics and industry people here think but the Japanese media which is controlled by the prosecutors in Tokyo continuallly drown out this information. Reading through media reports here (in Japan) we cannot but feel highly ashamed of what is being spread by false assertions from our government officials- Japanese justice has taken a huge global hit by their actions and it will probably never recover- in these times of other areas of Asia where citizens have woken up to manipulative governments using the media to press their agendas that becomes more difficult! Considering his mistreatment, and the unlikely prospect that he’d receive a fair trial, how many media moralists would have done the same. Ghoasn-san's case is highly credible. Barring new and persuasive evidence from Nissan or prosecutors which I highly doubt exists, Ghosn-san should stand acquitted in the court of public opinion.

Japanese and European folk should stay together and make stronger alliances. We are after all breeders of civilization itself. Such a pity that this actions had a detriment effect on our partnership.

@@euroniard3417 The problems are not our citizens but those who pertain to represent us- the government action that has been taken is highly embarrassing for us here but this situation has shone a very bright light on our justice system and it needs to change!
