Cmon Jimmy, Jonas was on the limit today. Tomorrow may be different, but today he didn't have more.

@Robert-vl3ur Ай бұрын
Jonas was able to catch Pog in stage 11 because he lucked out and had Roglic catch him on the descent off the next to last climb and Roglic basically dragged him down the descent and through the flat section leading to the final ascent. On every climb this tour where Pog has attacked on the final climb he's been able to gap Vingo and widen that gap to the peak. Look for more of the same tomorrow with another mountain top finish. Admittedly, Vingo is very likely still not 100% from his April injuries, but he also does not have the dominant Jumbo teams he had in '22 and '23 when they were able to tag team Pog and attack him relentlessly with multiple riders. Now the tables are turned and Pog has the superior support team.

This is expected! Jonas hasn’t trained for the Tour. 6 weeks ago he was in the hospital. If Pog wasn’t able to do this I would be concerned. Jonas will fade more and more.
@Robert-vl3ur

@@Raptors0524 Pog raced in '23 with a wrist fracture and missed two weeks of training himself. It happens. It isn't like Pog is dropping Vingo over long extended efforts. He is literally dropping the guy within the first 50 meters every time he has attacked him. We are seeing a likely less than 100% Vingo and a Vingo that does not have a dominant team to soften up Pog for him. 🙂

I think this year the situations of Pogacar and Vingegaard are the reverse of last year. Last year Tadej was coming off an injury and his team was weaker than Visma. Granted his injury was not nearly as severe as Jonas’ but it did affect his training. This year crashes and illnesses have weakened the Visma team and it’s Jonas that is coming off an injury. That has put Jonas out by himself countering Tadej just like Tadej was isolated last year. Carbon monoxide binds hemoglobin reducing the oxygen carrying capacity of blood. Much like altitude training, that reduction will stimulate red blood cell production and perhaps improve the oxygen carrying capacity of those RBC’s. Dr. Robert Schmidt, an expert in the field, has stated it may be more effective than EPO.

Another key difference is that in '22 and '23 Vingo had by far the most dominant team in the Tour. His teammates regularly tag teamed Pog and attacked him relentlessly. Now the shoe is on the other foot and Pog has the best team. Vingo is not winning this Tour. He's very likely still recovering from his April injuries, but even more important he no longer has a dominant Jumbo team that can attack Pog multiple times during mountain stages. In the past he was always protected in the mountains and could sit back watching other teammates like Roglic and Kuss attack Pog and then attack Pog himself after the others had worn him down. That game no longer exists.

I like the fact that this race is a team effort as it makes the racing far more interesting but also wonder on stages like this where a rider like POG would finish without a super domestique like Adam Yates. Is Jonas getting this level of support from Jorgenson? If Jonas can conserve energy and Visma does use tactics to cause UAE to respond with too much effort it may come down to a tour GC being determined by the final time trial IMO.

Jonas was looking around for help. The last time he did that, he was able to get guys to work with him which allowed him to save energy and catch Pogačar. This time, guys were too smart to help him. Remco played it perfectly by getting to Jonas' back wheel and sitting on. With nobody to help, Jonas had to work the rest of the stage. Jonas knew that he couldn’t close down Pogacar, so if he had Jorgenson paced he could save a little instead of him chasing Mano a Mano. I think Jonas played it smart today.. But I’m still waiting if “lack of preparation = lack of preparation.” Jonas is showing what Tadej looked like last year. Giving a proper fight, but logically it’s still hard to think that someone who has only 6 weeks of preparation can win the TDF unless Tadej finally runs out of gas from Giro fatique. Last year, Tadej with less severe injury, had 5 weeks training time,. We were also wondering about his form. He looked good, even dropped Jonas, before he blew up. Lemond beat Fignon in 1989 on the last stage, which was a TT. Lemond came from behind to beat Fignon by a total of 8 seconds. It was a strange win that year, as Lemond used an aero helment and aero bars (later banned), while Fignon went helmetless and used no aero equipment. The final TT this year provides a good chance for a similarly close race for podium places.

What is jimmy talking about. You think Jonas decided not to loose 39secs on purpose or to go into the red? Jonas was cooked when he crossed the finishline. No rider will deliberately loose GC time thinking they will gain it back in another stage. I don’t like this notion that Jonas will get stronger and stronger and pog will fade. Last year pog came into the tour without proper preparation and no one thought he will get stronger as the tour goes. But Jonas with more sever injury will?

Tomorrow is the real test… Today’s stage favoured Pogacar… only 150km and the last “climb” had low incline and even downhill in the final 3ks.. and was low altitude… this was absolutely a Pog stage! Tomorrow is a Vingegaard stage… this has to be the day they drew a circle around on the calendar… 200km long… more climbs, 1000 MORE ft of climbing and the final climb is 5km longer and pretty much 8% + ALL the way up… no downhill in the climb… [AND high, high altitude]!! AND it’s not about burning matches per se… it’s being smart and burning the F out of matches when it MAKES SENSE to burn some matches when the probability of return on those matches is good!! Pog used his team well and was smart today 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

@@segdoc it’s not about being convinced or not convinced… it’s about looking at the available evidence and analyzing what is possible or probable… I said “Tomorrow [now today] is the real test…” And it was… still another hard week and anything can still happen… but after this clearly Pogacar has the legs and has shown it’s his Tour to lose… this invalidates absolutely nothing I’ve said though.. nothing!

@akirasuzuki8378 said "Pogacar is the race favorite. Do not underestimate him." The guy who said this in response, seems to really know what he's talking about: "He [Pogačar] is [the favorite] IMO. This year Pogacar is on the best team, he has a 66 second lead, and he's better than Vimgegaard in the time trial." He could have done a little better on spelling Vingegaard's name though and he missed the funny thing over the c in Pogačar's name.

I’m not saying Jonas will win, but nobody should say he’s lost. Let’s not forget he put 1:38 into Pog in last year’s time trial, and then broke him completely 2 stages later. This year is very different, but don’t put it out of the realm of possibility

It is been profiles so far. Tadej is piling up the seconds on the flat and down hill. The difference so far in comparison to the last years has been that JV can't follow the attacks immediately, but he cuts into those gaps everytime as soon as TP settles in after going into the red. So far the profile of the race just fits TP better because there have quite honestly only been two real high alpine climbs. Today's final climb levelled off dramatically in the last 4kms. That is exactly where TP started to pull away again, because he obviously is a better classics rider than JV. The tactics of attacking on the steepest part of the climb which so far remarkably has always been perfecty close to the summit of the climb or - today - just ahead of the levelling. Hats off to TP because it works perfectly. We'll see on how this works on actual mountain finishes like tomorrow.

I know there are 6 more stages after tomorrow - but tomorrow could be the deciding stage for the GC depending on how it goes. Tadej looked fresher than Jonas today and beat him soundly. If he does the same tomorrow, that will be it. Jonas has nothing to be ashamed of, but I think it is already over.

That's one of the only good tactical stages I've ever seen out of Pog, and it was very very tactically good. Took enough of a gap on the climb by going near the end of the steeps, to make it man on man in a rolling finish because if it's steep to the end, Jonas could claw him back. In good shape, Jonas takes 2 or 3 minutes tomorrow. If he can take 45 seconds, tour isn't over. If they go even, or Pog wins, tour is done.
