@@d415ym1rabel Awesome! Thank you! I'm super intimidated by road bikes, so I currently ride a cute hybrid with a nice cruiser-like frame. But, I take that thing everywhere. So I'm comfortable riding on the road. I just feel so vulnerable on a road bike. But I also feel like they're just so awkward 😅 Granted, I was not properly fitted onto the one I tested 😆

Your quickest route to George Washington Bridge from southern Manhattan would be to use the West Side Highway bike lane which takes you as far as W 158th Street in Washington Heights

Yup what someone said here, take the Hudson greenway all the way up! Usually, you’ll just have to stop for pedestrians. But it’s one of my favorite rides especially on easy days. The views are great!

Also, I live in Brooklyn now and I grew up by Tenafly, NJ (one of the towns you end up in on 9W)…if you keep going up, you end up at Piermont NY. Crazy hills but a good stop for coffee/lunch as it’s next to the water. One of my favorite fondo rides from BK and back.

There's a cool gravel riding park in outer Brooklyn called Shirley Chisholm State Park. You can ride the Shore Road Parkway and then the Jamaica Bay Greenway there, but from Williamsburg it's a lot shorter just to go via streets. There are a lot fewer bike lanes in the outer part of the borough, though.
@GibsonCom

Great to see you ride up 9W. If you go further north you can hit Bear Mountain and also the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. The Village of Piermont by the Cuomo/Tappan Zee Bridge is also a VERY friendly destination for cyclists with numerous pubs, pizza places and unbelievable views of the Hudson River.

Though I’ve ridden lots in NYC, I haven’t yet gotten the courage to ride in London. I wholeheartedly agree that cycling is the best way to take in cities. I’d recommend cycling in many other US cities as well. Many are less frenetic than NYC.

Nice ride! Fun fact: The lower deck of the George Washington Bridge was originally meant to have train tracks (much like the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges). This never came to pass and the lower deck was used for vehicle traffic. The Verrazzano Bridge also has 2 decks for cars and trucks. Thanks for the video!

Fun fact: for decades the GW was a single level bridge. The lower level wasn't even thought of in the thirties, let alone trains.
@randorecumbent
@randorecumbent Жыл бұрын
@@stevek8829 They did indeed think of it. You just don't add another level to a bridge without designing it to handle the load in the first place. In fact, the NY/NJ Port Authority's own web site on the history of the bridge says the following "Ammann's design, bold and foresighted, was an engineering tour de force, with an extraordinary 3,500-foot center span suspended between two 570-foot steel towers, and the strength to carry two levels of roadway or rail."
@stevek8829

@@randorecumbent ok that makes sense. I looked it up an hour ago and it was added in 61. I thought I remembered it later in sixties. The place is the worst traffic, as soon as one jam ends construction begins. Glad I haven't seen it in years. Thanks for the correct information.

For the Northeast Megapolis (DC, Philly, NYC, Boston), Washington DC really stands out for having the city that has the best riding. Rock Creek Park is amazing for riding in the city. You have great roads in Maryland that are in riding distance from the heart of DC. The C&O trail is an amazing gravel towpath that you can link to other roads or enjoy on its own. Virginia next door has great riding as well. I know NYC is a special city, but when it comes to a big urban area on the east coast with good cycling, you can’t beat DC. Come visit or let me know if you’d ever like some GPS files!

Hello! Thanks so much for this series of videos. I've been a NY biker since the 1990s and you've hit all the highlights: 9W, River Road, Central Park, Prospect Park, the ride up to Tarrytown (near where I used to live when my kids were in school.) Thanks also for turning me on to Lake Shoes. My bunions are happier! The next time you're in town, please ride with me! I will show you my daily commute to work from Brooklyn.

Nice man! That's the route most people do in the weekdays during the AM. Coming from Williamsburg (more toward Greenpoint) the quickest way to the GW is either up over the Queensboro, cut through Central Park and get over to the west side's Hudson River Greenway. Otherwise, if you're close to the Williamsburg Bridge, most people take that straight across Manhattan via Delancey and then after a quick right on Bowery, Prince Street the rest of the way. From there, there's a few local 'cut throughs' like going up Riverside Drive to the GW, but no matter what way you slice it, it's still about 25k / 16 miles to the bridge. If you want to check out any city racing, there's the Lucarelli & Castaldi Cup in Prospect Park at 6 AM this Saturday. Cat 1, 2, 3 then 3-4, and then 5-Novice. And yeah, the "ebike" thing - it's fucking insane here now 😂

You have to come back and ride the GWB again! The Powers That Be have renovated the North Outer Roadway for peds and cyclists and it’s now WAY nicer than the old cycling path over the bridge. The cycle path you took to New Jersey is now closed while they renovate that one, also. And you HAVE to ride to the Runcible Spoon in Nyack. A cyclist destination mainstay for New Yorkers!

I tried this trail and almost died! lol Riding around NYC is not bad at all. However, once I crossed GWB and hit the beginning of the Palisades trail, whoa, that was a different experience! THE HILLS. I would imagine that the weather played a significant role -- it was a hot and hazy 100+ degrees -- making it even more grueling. However, even on a pleasant day I believe this trail will give intermediate/advanced beginners, such as myself, a proper beating.

I was observing a person near 80 years old flying down the street enjoying herself clutching the handlebar’s with a huge electric bike that was so big you had to look twice to see if a person was on it…. The joy of biking and the freedom to go faster than cars in the city ….
