Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems most #1s had just 1 or 2 weeks at the top, a few had longer. But no-one had more than 7/8 weeks except Stars on 45 (12 weeks), making it the longest runner of the 80s?

I was born in the year 2003 and I love with all my heart the music of the decades of the 60S, 70S, 80S, 90S and some of the 0WS. For a Young girl my age in my country, Argentina is very strange because They prefer to listen to Reggaetón and Trap. Anyway, I love these types of videos. Thanks and greetings

Can't believe , Bryan Adams not reaching number one during the 80's, in Canada, Especially having one of the biggest albums "Reckless" in the 80's, plus Bryan being from Canada.

Surprisingly, Bryan Adams had more success in USA than Canada. He had only 2 top 10 in the 80s in Canada : "Run to you" (#4) and "Heat of the night" (#7)

@@francispelletier3647 ,as many hits he had in the 80's and only two cracked the top 10 in Canada. That's crazy. When Corey Hart had a few number ones in Canada and was Canadian too , I believe. Not knocking Corey"s talent, but Bryan should have had more top 10 hits and at least one number one song in Canada during the 80's

This is the first video I've found for past Canadian music charts on KZfaq and I hope there will eventually be more. As expected from looking into Canada's top 100 year-end lists online, the Canadian charts are quite similar to those in the US, with some minor differences. Some of the most surprising differences were seeing that Rapper's Delight and Rock Lobster managed to be number 1 hits, and that Red, Red Wine was a hit in 1984 (although I already knew it topped the charts in the UK in 1983, so that might explain this) when it didn't top the US charts until 1988. Of the songs that didn't top the charts in the US, my favorites have got to be Rapper's Delight, Emotional Rescue, Cars, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, Tainted Love, Urgent, The Look of Love, Gloria, Sexual Healing, Electric Avenue, Hungry Like the Wolf, White Wedding, Oh, Sherri, Conga, La Isla Bonita, Don't Dream It’s Over, Beds Are Burning, and Mixed Emotions. Kudos also to 99 Luftballoons and to Rock Lobster's unexpected success. Looking forward to seeing some of the other videos you've put out for other countries.

The work you have done is highly appreciated! What a nice treat at 1 a.m...... As for the list itself - it's probably a basic soundtrack for the whole decade, only "Careless Whisper" was missing (I had to check it on Wikipedia, which says that on two Canadian charts this single went to number 1, but on the last one - The Record's Retail Singles Chart - only came to second place). Fortunately, there were also some interesting facts, eg 3:39 "The Friends of Mr Cairo" Jon & Vangelis (this song is almost 12 minutes long!), 5:28 "Dirty Laundry" by Don Henley, 11:25 "Neutron Dance" by The Pointer Sisters, 24:46 "Pop Singer" by John Mellencamp. Compared to the UK and US singles of Elton John and The Rolling Stones did far better. Suprisingly, I think there were three performers from German-speaking countries (Nena, Falco, Peter Schilling), but was there even one song in French? And how was Bryan Adams rated in Canada?

The reason was back in the 1980's there was a "cultural protectionism" in place in North America applied by record companies. During that decade around 95% of the music played on radio and on MuchMusic (Canada's MTV) were from performers from Canada, The United States, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. During the 1980's music video became the #1 promotion tool for music artists. If you were a musical artist that wasn't from the countries previously mentioned (mostly artists from Continental Europe) and wanted airtime on both radio and TV you had to come out with an "out of this world music video" to get that airtime. The best example of this was the Norwegian band A-Ha with the song "Take On Me" which got plenty of airtime because of the popularity of the music video. Many non-british music acts in Europe such as Valerie Dore, Sandra, Modern Talking, Ken Laszlo and many others who were big musical acts in Europe in the 1980's never got their music played here in Canada because of that "cultural protectionism" that was in place. If you simply look at the year-end-charts here in Canada and in the United States (Billboard) during the 1980's you will find out that the number of musical artists that were not from Canada, USA, UK, Australia and New Zealand on those year-end-charts.....you can count them on the fingers of one hand.

I heard a ton of these songs here in the US when I grew up in the '80s. There were a ton of American and British acts hitting the top of the RPM chart just like the No. 1 hits on my country's Hot 100, but I'm happy to see some Canadian acts get the top spot in their own country in the '80s. I'm surprised that Bryan Adams in particular didn't have a No. 1 hit on the RPM chart during that decade ("Heaven" topped the Hot 100 in '85).

Some of the songs that topped the Canadian charts are virtually unknown here in the USA, and not just ones by Canadian artists. Seems like there were some British/European hits mixed in (e.g. Jennifer Rush, Doctor and the Medics) but this is of course a mostly American-leaning list of songs.
