It was a very good win this. Just over a year ago Coetzee was the WBA champion and Frank just blew him out in a round.

The same boxing fans who say - 'The early 80s heavyweight division was a joke. It had no talent.' - will, then, turn around and tell you that 'Mike Tyson was an "All-Time Great".' Who did Tyson beat, during the early part of his career, when he was perceived as dominant? I'll tell you who - Trevor Berbick, James Bonecrusher Smith, Pinklon Thomas, Tony Tucker, Tyrell Biggs, Tony Tubbs, an old Larry Holmes, Michael Spinks, Frank Bruno, and Carl Williams. The same class of heavyweights, that these same people, refer to as "a joke."

I've watched a dozen Bruno fights and I can't remember one in which he didn't throw at least several rabbit punches.

@@Aerojet01 what does that have to do with Bruno being one of the more blatant rabbit punchers of all time?? Bruno was constantly holding and hitting and punching to the back of the head. That’s where the brain stem is. That’s one of the most dangerous punches you can take and it’s illegal. I think Bruno is a great fighter but John is correct, he was a serious offender.

Frank was a very decent boxer , had a huge punch but very underestimated as a boxer . In both the Bonecrusher and Witherspoon fights he was ahead until his chin intervened , was probably ahead or at least holding his own against Lennox Lewis too . It was ( unlike someone above says ) a very competitive era and some very good fighters around , all who could beat anyone around on their day . Larry Holmes though was a class above the rest , as was Tyson when he came along ....but I'd put any of the top 10 against any of the 2010-20 era and would rate the 1980's contenders as far better , not as big obviously but all better skilled as fighters than their current counterparts . Mike Tyson v Deontay Wilder ....Tyson would be all over Wilder in one round , Wilder wouldn't know what was happening . You don't see those sort of fighters these days .

@@Smudgeroon74 Both in many ways similar to big Frank. Cooney and Weaver had the advantage of US training system. Big Frank suffered from the same problem all UK HWs suffered - bad coaching.

He not a knock out puncher here he was but started lifting heavier weight and he started to lose his power by being too tight he couldn’t snap his punches like against Tyson he had lifted to heavy watch those later fights he looks great but pushing his punches

There was a time in the 80s when people that were trying to have boxing banned, were using Bruno's punching power as a reference, as it was considered deadly. That was just before Tyson was on the scene. The problem with Bruno was that he couldn't take a good shot, although he could dish it out

@@walt3299 It’s not fair (or accurate) to say that Bruno “couldn’t take a good shot.” ALL of his losses were to big punchers in hard, tough fights..Bonecrusher Smith, Tim Witherspoon, Lewis, and Tyson. If he’d been knocked out by JOE BUGNER, then you’d have a point.

The biggest bent fight of all time Coetzee was no mug and he was in with the best and stood toe to toe but on this day I was working as a manager in a London based betting shop and when they opened the market up on this fight they were very close in the betting marginal favourite was Coetzee all of a sudden the shops were being bombarded with large bets on Bruno I had punters who normally have a £10 Or £20 bet regular each day wanting to have 200 300 500 and more the odds for Bruno was evens these backers was going all round the country to back Bruno I have been involved in betting all my life and even when Bruno went to 1 to 3 from evens there was still thousands of pounds wanting to back Bruno. it's strange how quick Coetzee threw the towel in so early he knew he At to take a punch otherwise the coup on backing Bruno would have looked dodgy. I like frank always have but Coetzee got more out of this fight than frank and got beat OK Coetzee was not the force he once was but come on very you have been in the ring with the best in the world and only got stopped twice come on gerry it never looked good 😩😩😩😩but good luck to the punters they landed a nice touch and the only way they could lose as if Bruno was sick it was as performance by Coetzee someone told me he become a actor afterwards lol 😂 I can see why probably a stuntman 😂😂😂😂

Frank was great for UK morale but he just could not take a punch. If he could, he prob wouldve reigned the heavyweights for time.

To say that Bruno “couldn’t take a punch” is just plain stupid..the 4 men who stopped him (Bonecrusher, Witherspoon, Tyson and Lewis) were some of the hardest punchers in boxing history. If Bruno had gotten stopped by Joe BUGNER, then someone could rightfully say that he couldn’t take a shot.

Prime Holmes and Cooney would have beaten a prime Coetzee. I mean Greg Page put him out cold in 1984, that says a lot. And i am a fan of Coetzee mind you. Holmes would have outpointed him on UD(or even knocked him out). Coetzee didn´t have the power to hurt Holmes, no way. And a prime Cooney with that left hook would probably kill Coetzee. That one could have been a fantastic shuffle though.

Mentioning either of these guys in the same breath as a prime Larry Holmes is an embarrassment to both. Holmes woulda kicked both their asses on the same night. People remember Larry for his first fight in nearly 3 years loss to Tyson. Larry was a top 5 or 6 all time HW Champion. Look who he learned from, ferchrissakes

@@drumtum Greg Page beat Coatzee by a unanimous decision. And although he had wins against Michael Dokes, Leon Spinks, a few other top heavyweights of that era, and held the WBA title for a short stint, Coatzee was never considered to be anything more than "the other champion." I, however, do think that he would have been able to avoid Gerry Cooney's awkward left hook, and probably could have picked him apart. But against Larry Holmes? I don't think so. It's a real shame that the fight to unify the WBA and WBC titles never happened during the early 80s. I would have favored Holmes against any of the other guys who held that title during the late 70s and early 80s - Tate, Weaver, Dokes, Coatzee, Page, Tubbs, Witherspoon, and Smith. Holmes, to his credit, did fight and beat Weaver, Witherspoon and Smith. But, I blame Don King for there being no undisputed champ during that era.

Bruno was no way a power puncher like a Tyson or Forman Gerrie was done here Bruno’s whole career he koed bums and washed up fighters everyone know this anyone who was world level beat him frank was tuff I will give him that no way he was a devastating hitter.

He undoubtedly had menacing power, but his form and execution of punches left a bit to be desired. You're right, Frank Bruno had this win - against a Coatzee who was at the end of the line - and a bunch of never wases before he got his title shot against Tyson, in February of 1989. The other big fights he had: against Tim Witherspoon and James 'Bonecrusher' Smith ... he was put to bed late.
