Clayton Tharp He’s helped me through some very dark times too, Clayton. Around those times in the 80’s when lots of his stuff was appearing on record store shelves. Especially, for me, the lp, Ship arriving to late...I damaged my hearing listening to that full blast.

Ladies and gentlemen, Jorge Navarro is not fooling around. This man transformed a medium quality recording (I own the DVD, I know) of a great show into something so delightful that anyone in their right mind (that's right) would have to consider it one of the top 10 most important and impressive musical documents of the 20th century. I'm not kidding, it's up there with the original rule-bending score of the Rite of Spring, with A Love Supreme, with Duke Ellington's American marriage of African and European influences, with the best work of Varèse, Berg, Ligeti, Messiaen, Reich, and all those other wonderful composers. Hats off to Jorge Navarro, all hail!

Frank was the sort of prophet that used music to lighten the mood of being stuck under the thumb of oppression and corruption. A very intelligent and insightful man. The world lost a musical genius the day he died. He doesn’t get nearly enough praise for his ability to compose such technical compositions and to execute them with such mastercraft. He was doing things in the 80’s that producers and writers today have trouble with while using technology far inferior to todays standard. A candidate for Top 5 greatest musician ever. His music may offend some, his sound may not be your taste, but there is no denying his talent.

True that. But "metal"? I understand the use of said term to describe various segments, but I wonder if it is the best descriptor for the heavier sounds. I am not critiquing at all, just pondering the music you rightly refer to as "unclassifiable stuff". Sure, metal. Why not? And regardless of classifications, FZ is the ultimate musical savant and master of every type of music, transcending genre boundaries and inventing several new ones all of which reflect his genius and skill In short, you're right: No one does it like Zappa!
@grahamokeefe9406
@grahamokeefe9406 7 ай бұрын
@@michaelkottler Zappa specifically used metal as a reference. You might know about his hand signal system? He had hand signals for things like reggae, ska, and other things, and one of them was metal (he would mime "big balls" for it). Is it "straight" metal? Of course not! It wouldn't be Zappa if it were. Now, I know metal fans can be touchy about that kind of thing. God forbid you confuse death metal with black metal or something, but as a reference for a particular type of sound, I think it applies.

That version of Bolero takes me back to 1990. That summer a friend loaned me "The Best Band You've Never Heard" and a week later I was hooked. I drove my family, friends and neighbors crazy. I would blast that CD as loud as my stereo could handle. Over and over all summer long. After that I bought Joe's Garage then Zoot Allures. OMG, not sure how I never stumbled on this before. As a Zappa fan from the early 80s, this is music and satirical comedy of the highest order. I have ALWAYS told anyone who will listen that Frank Zappa is a musical genius and one of the greatest guitarists ever. People look at me like, " Who?" and I just roll my eyes and say go look it up. Sadly, he left us before he was finished making us think real hard about everything but in a funny way. Also, his concerts are masterpieces. How can these guys go for over 2hrs without missing a beat???? Practice makes perfect and this was perfect. Thanks Jorge for putting up such a great concert that sounds and looks amazing.

I saw seven Zappa tours starting with Overnight Sensation.......and feel I missed so much. Every tour was unique, amazing, unforgettable. Listening to this makes me feel nostalgic for a remarkable time in music history. Honestly, nobody compares. He was brilliant and he surrounded himself with brilliance. The great bands of his time could put a handful of riffs on an album. Frank could string handfuls of riffs into each piece! He is greatly missed. Thank you so much for posting this exquisite example of his genius.

@@absolutelypositively I think you're all stuck on ''Zappa being the only genius of the 20th century'' without realazing that he wasn't the only one back in his days and there're also young musicians with great talent posting their works on youtube and bandcamp. I dare you say Miles Davis wasn't on the same level as Zappa.
@absolutelypositively
@absolutelypositively 2 жыл бұрын
@@MarkAvatar2012 And I never would say that. Miles is listed on Franks 1st album ‘Freak Out’ as one of the people who influenced Frank. It’s been a long time since I quoted on this topic. Of course he isn’t the only musical genius of the 20th century. But I haven’t seen anyone (and please by all means I’m all ears) who has done more in so many aspects of his art. From classical/conducting, rock, avant-garde, jazz, self taught, film work, conceptual continuity, constant touring to keep the project going, satire, free speech, outstanding guitarist, one of the best. The man could do it all. He was just getting started. And most respected, no drugs except cigarettes and caffeine. Anyway. ‘Frank wasn’t the best at what he did, he was the only one who did what he did.’ (Sorry, quote stolen from Bill Graham about the Grateful Dead).
