Along with the original saying the evidence was inadmissible because of incompetence, I got the vibe that the vigilante execution was carried out by the parents, specifically the mothers, of the students in the school where Freddy both worked and found his victims - having cops not only be involved, but actively striking the killing blow (or match) kind of buggers up that the original was a sort of community and generational horror. Also tries to reinforce the idea that cops are the only things that protect people instead of people being able to defend communities themselves.

I mean, almost by definition a murderous mob is not “protecting the community” in any authentic manner. Especially not when said mob proves itself to be fond of arson. Even if you just accept that the mob was justified in its treatment of Krueger, there’s a good chance it won’t end there. Much like the arson fires, it’s bound to start spreading, engulfing people who _aren’t_ cartoonishly evil. Like, I donno, Frankenstein’s Monster, or a Jew in Eastern Europe during the 1700s. The murderous mob is inherently evil. It’s like locally sourced, artisanal, small batch fascism.

The weird thing is that the basic idea of the story is a pretty good one. A psychological horror story about Freddy's first kill as a dream-murder-ghost being against one of his vigilante-killers and making it about the mental cost of violence is a REALLY solid premise for a genuinely good Nightmare on Elm Street prequel. In an alternative universe, presumably one where all the sequels are also really good, we got an amazing slow-burn horror about paranoia and the raw trauma of killing your fellow man instead of this series.

@StevetheWizard2591
@StevetheWizard2591 2 жыл бұрын
@@Nulono If you want a list of reasons, there's cultural sensitivity, for starters. Mildred might not have any belief in it, but there's still an active practice with an active taboo surrounding it, and you should respect people when it's been made clear that something makes them uncomfortable, even if you don't understand why. Second, the culture from which the specific myths surrounding the monstrous cannibals originated have been asking people to not use that specific thing for literal decades, so there's also respecting the explicit requests of the people who actually told the original stories the movie drew inspiration from. Third, there's the fact that, even from an outsider's limited understanding of what they called the cannibals in the movies, the cannibals weren't even close to being what they're called in the movie, so there's also the issue of it being an inaccurate depiction of something culturally significant to people.

I distinctly remember catching this on tv when I was really young, it was one where Freddy was stalking someone through an abandoned building or maybe the boiler room (though this definitely wasn't from the movies, I remember the title screen). At the time my dad was in construction and took me with him to this concrete high rise building he was working on, and at one point I got separated from him. It was around twilight and I was absolutely terrified thinking Freddy was going to hunt me down in this dark empty building. Anyway that's the story of how this silly tv show was one of the few horror properties that really genuinely scared me. Also, thanks dad, that was fun.

I don't know, Waters of Mars may be a bit too action-oriented, and it plays into the overarching plot of that season a bit too much for it to really be taken standalone. And Love & Monsters is uh awful and forgettable. The only thing I even remember about any of the characters is that 2 of them fall in love, one of which is also a concrete tile. Blink, however, would be a fantastic topic for a short video like this. It arguably popularized (I'm pretty sure it didn't invent it though) the "monster that only moves when not observed but is incredibly dangerous" trope all on it's own.

I watched the whole series in dubiously legal downloads and on ancient VHS tapes. And yeah, there’s something weirdly life-affirming about it. You neglect to mention that while in his human form, they never show Freddy's face in full. Even in burned form, they cast a lot of darkness on his face. It seemed like a genuine attempt to make Freddy scary as he originally was. Of course, it didn't last long before he turned into the caricature he was at that point in the films. My earliest memories, before I even realized that my parents were divorced and that's why I was hanging out at my dad's house on the weekends instead of being at my mom's. I hadn't even been old enough to piece that together yet. I was born in 1986 and was not even 2 and a half years old, yet I remember watching this show being so terrified only to fall into a nightmare in an orange sleeping bag only to fall into a Freddy Krueger slasher nightmare. Nightmare on Elm Street always produced a scary effect for me even if it was cheesy growing up. Thanks for doing this review I would certainly like to see more. "Sister's Keeper" is another one you should check out. It's a direct follow up to the pilot episode focused on the twin daughters having Nightmares of Freddy, and the lead actors playing the sisters are also equally wonderfully terrible.

Oh yes, now that you mention it, I do recall watching this series. Didn't make a big impression on me, I reckon. I'd be happy to make an impromptu visit to Bobby Duke's place to convince him to give your channel back, if you'd like. (Actually, it wouldn't be me. It would be Bad Beaver, the evil comic book character I created while high on some burl sense bud. He works cheap, probably wouldn't set you back more than a few Slim Jims) lemme know

I thought the follow-up episode with the twins was genuinely scary.

I even had Freddy's CD album, but unfortunately I've lost it due to a move. The ones living in my old house have nightmares now 😅

There's an important improvement that 40 minutes needed, and that's for the guy who was killed while eating fried chicked to have been eating fried pork...
