Went to Paris two years ago with my 17 yo son who had taken four years of French. Nearly all the restaurant staff and other people we met were extremely cordial with him and helped him improve his French conversation. We were pleasantly surprised.

What you say is true. I dressed my daughter for her class trip to France. She needed to pack light, so she needed a few well coordinated pieces. She was a total opposite from her classmates, no makeup, black clothing, uncomplicated hair and ballet shoes. She also rocks a fedora. She was mistaken for a French woman many times.

Yes, be simple and stylish. Quite a few times people, would talk to me as though I were French (at first glance)until I opened my mouth to speak 😂

I was in Germany this past October and really struggled with the language barrier (I’m American). I got to the point where I was afraid to speak because I didn’t want to be a target. I tried to learn some German before I went but I didn’t learn enough to be functional. My advice would be to focus on directional terms, numbers, food names (especially if you’re vegetarian or have other dietary restrictions), and words that are very common in everyday language. I learned words like entrance, exit, street, stairs, escalator, elevator, etc. all in my first day because I had to get where I needed to go. I would have been much more relaxed if I had learned more before my trip.

All your advice was spot on. I’ll never forget traveling with a group of Americans, me too, and one woman complained about the food everywhere we went even telling the waiters “We don’t cook it like that in the US.” After about three days of this I pulled her aside and told her that if she wanted the food like at home then go home. She never said another word. As for dress, I always research the country to find out how to dress and what colors to wear. I try my best to blend in.

Oh my goodness! What a great video. As an American, I can not believe how loud my countrymen (and women) are!. Too loud in public spaces, yelling at one another across the boulevards, shrieking with laughter, it never ends! One piece of advice I would like to add to your wonderful video is; Watch your alcohol intake. I don’t think I have EVER seen a Parisian sloppy at a restaurant or bar. When Americans vacation we tend to forget that we are ambassadors for our country and more often than not, allow over imbibing to become the order of the day.

Excellent travel advice, not only for Paris, but anywhere in Europe! I try to dress to blend in and not stand out, and totally agree that it shows respect for another culture to know some polite phrases and words! The best compliment I can get while travelling is if someone asks me for directions! Success, mistaken for a local! And my favourite souvenirs while travelling are scarves and jewelry- they don’t take up much space and are a lovely reminder of the trip. Thanks so much!

Great travel tips Frederique. When I was last in Europe I followed many of the tips you mention. I wore minimal to no jewellery, no visible camera and wore a cross body bag which I kept in front of me with my hands resting on it the whole time. I never had any problems with theft. Dressing with respect to other cultures is also very important.

As an European living in Canada (tomorrow will mark 20 years here), I could not agree more. If we could take the best of both cultures and implement it somewhere, it would be the perfect place on earth. ❤❤ I just got a reminder today that 5 years ago I was in Paris and just looked at some pictures on my phone. Without glasses and knowing it was me, I looked pretty Parisian lol. Great video, as always, Frederique! Love you.

I must say that athleisure is pretty common in Dutch cities these days, but I appreciated the rest of your advice. Just returned from Tuscany, we only speak guidebook Italian but even that is enough to delight people and make them treat you well. Thank you for the travel tips, Frederique! Paris is a city that is on my "bucket list" to visit. I realize that Americans seem to be more casual than our European friends, especially when it comes to athletic wear and logos, so we must stick out like the proverbial "sore thumbs" to scammers and pickpockets. As far as backpacks are concerned, I could never understand why people use them for anything except hiking in the woods. So easy to steal out of! I will remember these tips, plus learn a little conversational French, whenever I'm lucky enough to visit France!

Thanks for another great video Frederique. My husband and I are leaving on Wednesday for a month on the Italian/French Riviera and a month in the UK so I would have loved your video on what to take to Europe. We are going with carryon luggage only, which as you know is only 7kg from Australia- which is like nothing. Anyway, I am taking navy linen pants, white linen pants, black leggings (for exercise, not to wear in public!), 5 or 6 tops, a light denim jacket, 1 dress, a tankini, a hat, 1 pair of sandals and not much else. I’m already at my limit and haven’t ruled out wearing all my clothes onto the plane. I think going through security dressed as the Michelin Man definitely screams “tourist”!

Oh Frédérique😃 You made me laugh a lot 🤣 I am Northern European who lives in Australia.. 2 years I spent with Italian in Barcelona and Rome and learnt from him how to detect tourists from all over the world. It was funny but also useful. Italians are extremely fashionable but a bit too flashy for me. 😃 I prefer French way.. When I lived in Rome and my daughter attended Italian school near Vatican, we used to go after her lessons to Cafés for snack (Italian school lunches are just amazing). So I spoke Italian (not very good but ok) and in one café poor waiter 🤣 tried very hard to speak with me in French. I didn't understand French back then 😅 I told him that I am not French (even though I look like). So I spoke Italian he speaks back in French and my daughter laughs. About tips and tricks you are absolutely right. Last time I was in Paris while having long waiting hours to go back to Australia via Singapore. I went to city centre to enjoy. Again fun fun 😄 I was wearing silk dress, ballerinas and linen summer coat - all in beige/camel tones.. So tourists stopped me and in basic French asked for directions.. I felt very bad that my French is so extremely limited 🤣 Only real French man understood that I am not French and we had small chat in English and coffee and goodbye kiss 😘 Love Paris 💖 In 6 hours I got everything, including Opera Garnier visit

I'm into photography and one of the things that always makes me wonder about these kind of tips is how do local photographers carry their cameras :). I love Paris and have been several times. Having a crossbody bag in front of you is key, i always wore it like that and i used subway and walked lots. There was only once that people did try to scam me asking to sign a petition. they literally shove that in your hands but my bag was crossbody in front of me and i refused firmly, plus a couple of very helpful gendarmes came to my aid. I am not an American and my style is quite European so usually i manage to blend in, but being vigilant is very important to enjoy your stay. Thanks for the video.

My partner and I were in Paris at the beginning of April and the biggest compliment we got was being asked twice for directions by French people. We were wearing smart casual clothes and trench coats both times. Also we learnt some French before we went there and in the two weeks we were in Paris only once did we have one grumpy waiter but he was rushed off his feet so it was understandable. We used the metro regularly and just like every big citykeep an eye on your bag.

Whenever I am in France people ask me for directions! Especially Germans and other Northern Europeans and Asians of all types. Unfortunately unlike you I am a complete slob, but I guess a French-looking slob =). It gets to the point that when I see Japanese people or Germans making any sort of eye contact I run away! The punchline is that I have the worst sense of direction ever - I can get lost in my home city.

I agree Years ago my sister in law wanted to renew her wedding vows in Rome. I had traveled to Italy several b times before this, and was well aware of the cultural expectations. Plus I took 4 years of Italian in high school I advised her to make sure to be appropriately covered up, specifically her arm and chest We’ll, she wore a sleeveless v neck, cleavage showing dress to the church bi could tell from the priest’s face that he was none too pleased. I tried to tell her to save the cleavage for my brother in law, but she didn’t listen. Dince there were others in tge church I think the priest kinda gave them the hurry up abbreviated version of a vow renewal. She felt usher, snd slighted, snd tbh she was because she wasn’t dressed properly I wore a bling sleeved wrap dress with a hemline below my knees. She actually told me I looked silly dressed like that, because it was warm outside

I love your style. Very good advice. I got similar advice some 30 years ago when traveling to Italy and it served me well. One scam involved small children showing you a piece a of paper. It did happen and just being prepared and taking certain measures to not become a victim kept me safe from any scams. I don’t like looking like a tourist so I blend in well most of the time when in Europe, No matter what country you travel from or too, everyone needs to be respectful of the customs and culture of that country.

I discovered your channel a few days ago and have been marathoning your videos. You are a breath of fresh air, so genuine... a true inspiration ✨ Your content is excellent. I am delighted, and it has been a lot of fun watching you. In two weeks, I will travel to Provence (my first time in France). Let's see if I can pull off some of your tips (not having the camera around my neck will be difficult, I carry it even on my day to day - love photography). Much love from Portugal 🤍

My Francophile friends who have traveled to France tell me even when they try to speak French the response is in English. When ever I have traveled to France, including Paris, I always speak as much French as I know or can and I am well received. I usually say very politely that I am learning French and would like to practice my french and all but one time others were happy to speak with me in French. I adore learning in France. I am going to Paris to stay with a friend for a few weeks this month. Scared and excited, she speaks NO English. Wish me luck. 😊

I toured Europe in 2007 with a group made up of many nationalities. I am from the United States (Texas to be exact) and was warned by the travel agency not to wear ANYTHING that would identify me as an American. My first thought was that I could not say anything on the entire trip as I have a very readily identifiable Texas accent 🤣! Everywhere I went, though, I found the people of Europe very friendly and helpful. The one phrase I learned in French, German, and Italian was “Excuse me, do you speak English?” as well as the typical good morning (or day or evening), thank you, excuse me, please. Your tips are always so useful! Thank you for teaching us how to dress appropriately, and watch to watch for. Blessings to you ♥️

Bonjour, Frederique. Thanks soooo much for this video. God willing -- I hope to travel to Paris next year. I already subscribe to Babel-- so that I can learn a few conversational words in French. I also watch What are they wearing in London, Paris, or Italy. You have confirmed how an American should present themselves when abroad. Looking forward to my vacation. Thanks again. God Bless you.
