A traditional guitar player, I'm just starting the lap steel and had decided to use C6 tuning because of it's association with Western Swing. These eleven minutes felt like being in a car at night and having someone turn on the headlights. A real boost in being confident to move forward.

@@jerbear7952 Dad was really happy to get the lap steel. Played with it a few times and I was able to help him tune it. He still messes with it from time to time, but hasn't developed the ear. I think the best thing is that I got to give it to him and tell him that he was my first "guitar hero." That was cool. Thanks for asking.

Very nice. I used to play steel in C6 tuning many years ago (around 58 to be exact) and am picking it up again after a straight-guitar hiatus. I believe it important to see the minor/major configuration in the C6 tuning and I like your explanation of it.

I am just starting on lap steel. I am a long time guitarist. OK what tuning would you use to play along with most guitarists that play in standard 440? Can you just tune it like a standard guitar, E A D G B E, in 440 and play it like that with all the notes in same places? Otherwise, how would you play along with a standard band or jam session when everyone is in standard A 440?

Great video and explaination of the tuning without slants bar techniques. The C6th came from the Late Great Mr. Jerry Byrd the master of touch and tone. I play C6th all the time at my gigs more then the E9th tuning. There are a lot of great players out there who cant play C6th I amagine there is no instruction on it in years past. The only instruction there was at the Time was Mel Bray He more centered his instruction on the Fender 400 cable model or the 2000 all 8 string necks. rendering the instruction useless with the modern day pedal steel guitar. Great videoFrankie Day

Hi! Thanks for your informative videos! I wonder what to do if the lap steel one can find to buy is sold with open D tuning. Must one buy other strings? Is it really common with open D when buying a lap steel? I thought C6 or other 6 tuning was the most common. I want to play 30's type of stuff with the sound of early western swing bands.

If you play a song where the 6th is not appropriate, is there a quick adjustment to get to a regular major open tuning? Like maybe the band has 1 rock song or something, IDK. Would you try to mute the A string, or would you just play the 3 lower strings for major chords, and the 3 higher ones for minor?

I have 2 cheap electric guitars I’m considering converting to lap steels. One is 24.75” Gibson scale length and other is an Epiphone les Paul made for kids. It’s at my sons place right now and I’m unsure the scale length on it. Maybe 18”??? If I’m dead set on C6 which would be better to convert? I play guitar and have owned lap steel in past but didn’t know anything more than open e tuning and had no idea what a scale length was back then I was so young and naive. I really want to try again and C6. Could I just install lap steel C6 strings, or should I go heavier and use the very short scale Epiphone les Paul kids guitar. You know it’s one of those Christmas specials with battery powered amp and vinyl case for kids.

The standard guitar tuning gives you fewer options, but I believe there’s one that’s similar with a G# that I’ve heard of people using.

@LearningWithPat5 жыл бұрын
there is no "better" tuning, it depends on the type of music you want to play. open E is great for blues, c6 is great for country and western swing.

No disrespect. But for those who don't want to learn theory, it might be better to use the "Nashville number system"; rather than note system. Most musicians that play steel guitar use it (knowingly or not). IE: (Common laptop tunings) Do Re Me Fa Sol La Ti Do=1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 (octave) C6: C E G A C E=1 3 5 6 1 3 (EVERY fret regardless of the note and below also) D: D A D F# A D=1 5 1 3 5 1 G: G D B G B D=1 3 5 1 3 5 A6: F# A C# E F# A C# E=6 1 3 5 6 1 3 5 E7: B D E G# B E=5 ♭7 1 3 5 1 E13: B D E F# G# B C# E=5 ♭7 1 9 3 5 13 1 B11: A C# E B D# F#=1 3 5 ♭7 9 11
