ERRATA: At 1:23 I said 'static routes by default have an administrative distance of 5'. The actual default AD of static routes is 1 (I mixed it up with Juniper devices, in which static routes have an AD of 5).

awesome work as always. just to recap for my own sake, the floating static route could be use as a backup route in case an interface goes down or something happens with ospf but in order to make sure that we dont break ospf, as the primary routing protocol configured, we configure floating static route the same as a static route but then add at the end of the command a metric higher than ospf of 110. thanks again Jeremy!

Hi Jeremy, I have a question about STP I'm seeing in the simulation just to make sure I understand that that concept (If not, I need to revisit) STP is happening even though they are in two separate networks because the switches Layer 2 are the root bridge? Or does STP happens on every frame? This is something I'll need to review.

I spent half a hour trying to do the lab, watching the video i figure out that i had done all configurations correctly, but I was trying to ping into 10.0.2.1 via R1 or R2 to save time (quickly ignoring PC1), and ending up in a loop between these routers and the ISPBR1/2 ones, that i was only able to discover when in Simulation Mode, until now i didn't understand why this happened, probably because of the excessive thinking, but i understand that making mistakes is a part of the learning process hahaha Anyway, thanks for the Course Jeremy, its being my main resource to the CCNA until now, going after Neil Anderson's course on Udemy when I finish here, greetings from Brazil PS: Sorry if there is any English errors up there, still learning the language =)

At the end of Jeremy's lab, if we bring the R1--R2 connection back up, then after a brief delay (presumably for the OSPF process to converge) the OSPF-learned route between PC1 and SRV1 (more precisely, between networks 10.0.1.0/24 and 10.0.2.0/24) automatically replaces our floating static route in R1's and R2's routing table. Floating static routes are cool! Even though the floating static route isn't added to the routing table when the R1--R2 connection is up, the routers must be storing that route somewhere, because they do add it to their routing table when the connection goes down. Where? Check the running configuration... Is it correct to say the following? Because the dynamic routing protocol(s) used internally by an autonomous system (AS) will automatically update routes within the AS, the only floating static routes we configure are on border routers (connected to a network outside the AS) to a network outside the AS.

Quick question!! How did SPR1 and SPR2 learn the routes to 10.0.1.0/24 and 10.0.2.0/24 networks. We only configured a static route on R1 and R2. Looking at the routing table of SPR1 and SPR2 they are not configured with dynamic routing protocols. They only have got static routes.
@MarshallPetit
@MarshallPetit 4 ай бұрын
Hi, 5 months later but answering for both you and others who might've had the same question if you've already figured it out. SPR1 and SPR2 each already had a static route on them, SPR1 to 10.0.1.0/24 and SPR2 to 10.0.2.0/24, so that explains how they are able to get to those networks. However, they do not have static routes configured directly to the other network, 10.0.2.0/254 for SPR1 and 10.0.1.0/24 for SPR2. The way those routers get to those networks is through their default routes. The default route for SPR1 goes to SPR2, and vice-versa, so between their static routes and their default routes they are able to route to both the 10.0.1.0/24 and the 10.0.2.0/24 networks.

Hi Jeremy, when I shutdown the g0/2/0 int on R1 and attempted to ping SRV1 from PC1 the request timed out. I then added static routes on SPR1 and SPR2 and then the ping worked. How come you didn't need to do this in the video or have I missed something?
@Girax93
@Girax93 15 күн бұрын
I was confused for a bit. In my lab day 24, there is no route with OSPF marked with "O" as it is on yours at 2:34. This made it so that I could not answer the first questions. When I ping I could see the message going from R1 to R2, but the route via 10.0.2.0/24 is not in the routing table. The fix was to wait for quite a while, before the route would show. All of a sudden it popped up. I guess it had to be populated dynamically first, and that it really may take a while for that to happen.

Hi Jeremy thanks you for all your videos. Had a query. While trying this lab - point #2 where we had to configure floating static route if the link between routes R1and R2 fails. The configuration was to set the AD # higher than the existing OSPF (IGP), but instead i set the AD # lower just to check in the IP route table and later I increased it back to 111 but this time when checked the "IP route table" it still showed me the static route (having AD#111) and not the pre configured OSPF (IGP), can you explain why???

This might be a silly question but is there a way to verify the floating static route was configured correctly without shutting down my OSPF route interface?

I would do 'show running-config | include ip route' and make sure the config is correct.

Don't we have to configure the floating static route on SPR1 and SPR2 ?
@JeremysITLab
@JeremysITLab 4 жыл бұрын
You're configuring this from the perspective of a network engineer working for Enterprise A, it's not your responsibility to configure the ISP's equipment. I didn't put passwords on them though, so you can see I just configured a couple static routes to take care of things.

There is a difference in the lab from the video. SPR1 and SPR2 didn't have 10.0.2.0 and 10.0.1.0 routes configured. I had to configure them manually.

That's odd, did you get the file from the Google drive? I just downloaded it and checked, the necessary routes are there (SPR1 has a route to 10.0.1.0 and a default route via SPR2. SPR2 has a route to 10.0.2.0 and a default route via SPR1).

There isn't any convention that I'm aware of. As long as it's higher than the dynamic routing protocol's AD it's fine!

I configured the static route and I can ping SRV1 from PC1 but why ping fails SPR1 to SRV1? Can anybody please explain?
@RatHeadxxx
@RatHeadxxx 5 ай бұрын
Look at the routing table of R2. It has a static default route to 203.0.113.13 (ISPBR2). When PC1 ping SRV1, the ICMP REQUEST packet hits SRV1 with the L3 header having the SOURCE IP of PC1, and so SRV1 sends an ICMP echo REPLY to the router (default gateway) with a header now having PC1 IP in its destination. The router R2 can route this packet back because it has a route to PC1's network. However,, when SPR1 sends an ICMP request to SRV1, SRV1 indeed receives it... But it will send an ICMP echo reply with SPR1 IP as its destination. Now, this reply hits the router, and the router looks in its routing table to look for where to route this packet. It can't find any good routes, so it sends it to the default route. The default route of R2 is ISPBR2 ip address. The packets then go back and forth from ISPBR2 and R2, never coming back to SPR1. This is not really a flaw in the lab, as the point of the ISP routers in this lab are to simulate the internet. And because of the limited scope of packet tracer and the actual point of this lab and what knowledge it is trying to test you on, this configuration is made as a compromise.
