Omega Protocol - how to make charcoal at home for free. Don't throw out those limbs you trimmed. Turn them into charcoal briquets fast and easy by using a charcoal maker. We show you how to make one from an old can and you can make as much charcoal as you like for cooking and or use in a metal forge. The one thing to keep in mind is that you should only use natural wood for creating charcoal for cooking. So limbs that you trim from a tree would be ideal for making cooking charcoal. If you want to make charcoal for use in a metal forge to either heat or melt metal or steel, you can use charcoal made from any old wood. Say wood from an old deck or something like that. Making charcoal is simple and fun and its a great skill to have and pass on to others.

Thanks for showing your charcoal kiln. I did want to correct you on something; Pine actually makes some of the best charcoal especially if you know WHY and how to make the best use of it. There are a few reasons this is: It stays light in the forge and creates airspace and insulation. This is very important because nearly all hardwood charcoal breaks into really small pieces as it burns. When these small pieces collapse and divide over and over the charcoal compacts, severely restricting airflow which of course is necessary heat metal Take a baseball size piece of charcoal from say oak or maple and that same size from a pine species and the pine charcoal wont collapse into smaller and smaller pieces as quickly. These larger more insulative chunks are invaluable for creating a variety of pocket sizes for a well managed fire. Yes it does burn fast but in an open air charcoal forge if you want to get even near welding temps you want that heat plus if you manage your fire well it its really not a huge difference. Red pine specifically is the most desirable forging charcoal for Japanese Smiths so that should tell us all something.

Ben Griswold , pine charcoal strictly as a heat source is in fact good; grilling or smoking with it is not good at all

Is there a part 2 for the forge? I don't see it.

you can take a pipe weld in on the lid and lead these gases towards the fire underneath

You didn't leave it burning long enough to be considered charcoal. that is basically just partially burnt and dried out. If it were hardwood coal you would have been able to break it up in to small peices by hand after it was done, and wouldn't still be brown and recognizable as wood. Also if it isn't fully turned into charcoal when forging it still has alot of impuities to put into your metal and produces a good bit of smoke. Overall a good way to make wood coal. Keep up what you are doing we should all know how to be self sufficient and how to use the old ways of getting things done.

is Mahagoni also good for that

It will work the same but I wouldn't waste it on charcoal. Mahogany is expensive and I'd make something out of it before I burnt it. IMHO.

Honestly I do not like the way the coal is made. The process itself is great but here it was a complete waste of enrgy and the wood gas was just given to the atmosphere. I would recomemmend to combine that with a secondary ignition of the gases used for cooking or heating, so that no smoke will be produced and you use it efficiently

Sure...if you can use it for something you should absolutely do so!

@@GuysLikeUs If you turn the kiln upside down, so the holes are in the flames of the fire below, the flames will ignite the syngas, helping to heat your charcoal. The oxygen would still be unable to get to the charcoal, so you would get a cleaner, hotter burn of material. Best of luck.

and you say sth like balsa isn't good for that. because i have some balsa and want to use it for sth but don't know for what

Balsa burns very quickly. Its got a lot of air in it. Very porous. If you don't have anything better to do with it, sure you can use it, but it won't burn long, but it will burn hot.

So not all the wood is black dose it make a difference?
@GuysLikeUs
@GuysLikeUs 7 жыл бұрын
No not really. I could have put it back on for a while if I wanted it to all be blackened. I mainly use it for my forge, but when you cook with it the browned wood seems to give it a bit more flavor. Like adding oak chips to your barbecue.
