2021's Free Guy is new Deadpool as Ryan Reynolds original movie that amazingly didn't flop at the box office but actually got a good enough reception and made enough money for Disney to greenlight a sequel -- which for an original film not based on any kind of IP, that's incredible. And it might've smartly cheated a bit to achieve that, borrowing stuff from other properties like Grand Theft Auto Online and The Lego Movie and even Marvel and Star Wars to sell itself to Hollywood and the audiences. So in today's Film Perfection, let's identify exactly how Free Guy utilized things from successful IP franchises like GTA to become a success story of its own.

To be fair, the reason the game company in the movie was the portrayed as the big bad was not because they wanted to make a sequel, but because they had promised the sequel would be backwards-compatible with the original, when in reality they were planning on taking the original offline as soon as the sequel dropped and every player would have to start from scratch.

He's not even portrayed as a "bad" guy (well, he's an asshole, and he stole the initial conxept code, but that's it). People want the sequel. He's only "bad" because the sequel will erase our protagonist.

Another thing I noticed, the name of the company is Soonami which is a portmanteau of Konami and Bethesda Softworks. The "So" part is from Bethesda Softworks and "onami" comes from Konami. In addition, the name sounds vaguely similar to "tsunami", a type of natural disaster. Blizzard Entertainment is also named after a type of natural disaster. So three large gaming companies who are widely hated are featured in the title of a seemingly large villainous fictional game company, quite a cool detail.

Honestly I feel like Ryan Reynolds played a huge part in the movie's success, I know myself and a lot of my friends only knew about the movie because of Ryan, and if the character was played by someone else (say another big actor like Gosling), we mostly likely wouldn't have been so excited for the movie. Ryan Reynolds himself is a marketing cheat code.
@OnionChoppingNinja
@OnionChoppingNinja 2 жыл бұрын
True that. it may not have been based on an existing IP, it may not have been a sequel. But in Ryan Reynolds it still had one of the hottest properties of Hollywood at the moment associated with it. Now having a big Hollywood name associated with your project is no guarantee for success (looking at you doolittle) but it sure helps in gaining momentum.

Also the fact Ryan didn't stop creating new add-ons that got added to the movie after completion, Dude, was one of the post editing additions. And in my opinion a master stroke of an addition. @HazmatPyro
@HazmatPyro 2 жыл бұрын
Disney is interested in a sequel but I don't think it has actually been greenlit. I have no idea where to take the film in a sequel. Antwan traded free guy 1 in in exchange for the lawsuit against him being dropped and now Guy and the npcs are stuck in a virtual world seeming content with the state of it. Nobody can access the servers of free guy 1 because it's not publicly accessible due to the deal with Antwan so nobody can really ruin anything for guy. So we have a main character stuck in a perfect world with nobody to serve as an antagonist. Meanwhile Antwan is not going to make the same mistake again and will use a less complex ai that won't go sentient. (Correction: I looked up the plot and apparently Antwan launched a catastrophic flop and got arrested for theft so he's pretty much fucked. I can't see him working in the games industry anymore.) Millie and Keys are likely to live a happy life either as indie game devs or working at some other studio. So there's nowhere to take the film in a sequel that will add anything. There's nothing more to explore and any future events are likely going to be quite boring. In addition, I see little point in making a Free Guy 2 with different characters as we already have the first film and while it is a fun film idea, seeing the same film again with some variations is boring. A spin-off would be very different from Free Guy and then you're better off making a separate ip if you want to explore whatever plot you can come up with for Keys , Mouser , ans Millie. TL;DR: a sequel is pointless.

@jakeand9020
@jakeand9020 2 жыл бұрын
Most of them could. I take that back. Almost all of them could. Provided if by "independent" you mean not with their parents specifically. They would still be stuck living with other people, in many cases worse people than their parents. They also wouldn't have time for silly things like "hobbies" or "fun." Like playing video games or making KZfaq (or similar platform) videos. Unless they somehow already had enough of a following for that to be their primary source of income that equaled an actual 9-5 job (which ironically, is almost never 9-5, it would have to be more like 9-9 or longer.)
@winns35
@winns35 2 жыл бұрын
Almost every 22 year old should be able to live independently. It's called living within your means. My son just graduated high school is 18 and is about to be living on his own because he knows he can't waste his money and live within his means. Shoot when I was 18 me and his mother just had his older sister, we had our own apartment while still finishing our last year of high school even.

You do know some kid have to move in to their parents house to buy a house or the parent followed the whole I moved out so you have to move out. My mom moved out like 15 was not easy by any means. I never moved out you got to find a job to do that or go to college but it is possible to leave the house alot of runaways found that out. Some kids still live with their parents after 18. So I think it is a more individual thing.

Of all things to love about this movie, and there’s a lot of things, I absolutely loved how much shade it threw at Rockstar. Especially after the disaster that was the Definitive GTA Trilogy. There’s no denying they’re a scummy company, and this movie portrayed that perfectly, especially in the little details. Throwing Dude in to stop Guy when he was only about 60% done. Shutting out the entire player base to stop one bad apple from playing. The entire plot point where they’re just abandoning their old titles to make infinite money off the sequel through microtransactions. And how their intentionally rushed game was rightfully panned for being buggy and unplayable. At this point, it’s not even shade, it’s just blatant criticism. And even when they’re not bashing Rockstar, they’re being very faithful to the gaming industry. The little guys got their work stollen by the big studio with all the resources. Gamers are beginning to drift away from the big shooter sequels and take in the smaller, more thought out titles of indie devs. And honestly just the studio environment as a whole, what with all the allegations being thrown out at basically every other studio for having a toxic work environment. It’s all really faithful except the streamers, the world caring at all, and all the shenanigans they pull in the final act. But I’m willing to look past that because of how god dang fun this movie was.

Which in darker ones leads to many life long crippling injuries or death as having a broken arm or leg and being left to hang upside down in Gotham at night... isn't the best way to stay healthy.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the concept of creating your own twist on an IP without using that IP by using its already-established components and values. I have to say I think one undersold aspect of Free Guy's ultimate success was the promotional efforts of Ryan Reynolds. He picks passion projects, stuff he really believes in with really talented writers and then he makes sure everyone knows about them through his social media and online presence. I mean if you go back and look he did the media work of an entire cast by himself appearing in most major media outlets, youtube channels and late night shows and promoting the shit out of the movie on his instagram. It's the kind of work ethic and dedication to a craft that makes someone a permanent mark in the history books, truly one of best all around actors, producers and writers in Hollywood, mad respect.

Disney acquiring the property gave them access to Disney IP, like the Marvel elements and such to include in the movie.

I can't seem to catch this movie in full when it comes on but so want to see it. From what parts I did see I think they are self-aware at the parody of it all. I feel like "The News" is following Guy's story because it's like the real world and the game world are somehow just aware of each other and if viewers can accept that fantasy element then it works. I get it that it isn't the Matrix but maybe a little closer to Wreck It Ralph that each being, real or computer kinda knows the other exist. I get what Filmento is saying about the NPCs but it is so funny that I like it. Guy seems likeable so I wouldn't want to kill him with a laser sword. lol.

Just the fact that they brought in Pokimane, Jacksepticeye and many other media personalities is hilarious because they add nothing to the film except being a famous face. There were so many things it got wrong about programming, game design, gaming culture and Taika Waititis villain is probably one of the worst villains I've ever seen and I love all of it. 10/10 movie, might never watch it again but happy I did.

I feel like every time Ryan Reynolds is in something people say something like " oh it's deadpool, but X". It's not a hot take anymore and at best it has maybe one or two jokes you could classify as deadpool jokes with this movie at the very least. I think this movie already getting a announced sequel is definitely a mistake since where do you go from this movie to another. Also i feel like the content creators they chose to show apart from maybe like one of them are quite toxic in some ways
@GBDupree
@GBDupree 2 жыл бұрын
The real life Content Creators were definitely the worst part, whereas the fake one, despite being a stereotype, wasn't that bad and can be enjoyed. The idea was doomed to fail anyways because those who are familiar with them would most certainly cringe because its obviously forced and fake because they know they wouldn't say or do that, or because it is *them* and they are already cringy and people avoid them anyways. Like I would never expect them to put in really good content creators that don't get enough love, but you know they'll put in the people who are super popular, despite how little people you would know in real life that can enjoy them without cringing. Like they have to be popular because young children aren't allowed to watch things with "bad words" in them, but are allowed to freely watch Twitch, so they get to giggle at the "silly person" yelling and swearing a lot, right? So its clearly a bunch of executives who don't know what most people will like, because not everyone will like the same stuff anyways, but pick whatever are the biggest names. Which, unlike some other media like films, KZfaqrs/streamers/TikTok-ers (and also music industry """stars""") who are the biggest names in the industry are typically disliked by people who are fans of the genre and like quality, but are popular through other methods, typically people who are just getting into the medium and don't know who to pick and aren't too bothered by quality so take whoever paid for the best advertising. They think that by including these people we will go "Woah, they got him? I need to see this show now!", when the more likely reply would be "yeah, we all knew they were a sellout", or "well good for him, glad he got paid to do that, but I wasn't interested in the show". There's no winning here, but there is losing, both the studio wasting their money on something that won't gain them more, and the viewers who have suffer with seeing someone they already try to avoid despite KZfaq's best efforts. Especially when so often these massive "stars" tend to end up revealed as terrible people in some way or another (which, to be fair just about no one is immune to that, but all the more reason not to play with fire). Like I'm pretty sure that the girl streamer (Forgot the name, started with an A?) got in trouble because she likes to poison and torture her cat for fun on streams, and then when people tried to stop her she got Twitch to defend her and remove the comments and then boost her content, which is why she suddenly got super popular. If that is her and not someone else, then that makes her involvement in the movie really bad, and rewatching will be rough if you even want to bother.

@@GBDupree You sound like one of those people who just don't like big youtubers, just because they're big, yeah Ninja, and Pokimane can be a little toxic, but they also had Danddtm( don't watch him, but recognize him), and Jacksepticeye, and people really enjoy their content. Jack has also done dozens of charities, not sure about Dan, the point is, just because a youtuber is big, doesn't mean they're cringe, and just because a youtuber is small, doesn't mean their content is suddenly worth while, both big, and small content creators have merit. About the controversies, yes, they're have been a sad amount of creators that have turned out to be manipulators, or trying to sleep with minors, but their have also been a bunch of content creators that have had false, or just plain stupid controversies flown their way, some even cancelled for a stupid mistake they made years ago, meanwhile people like Mini Ladd are still making content despite being a piece of shit, people are all just attacking the wrong people, while defending the worst people, or focusing on the dumbest shit. I do, however, think it's a little dumb that gamers would actually defend an NPC, when NPC's revolting in an online multiplayer game would ruin the enjoyment for the players.

@@themightycongueror8383 It would have been cringe even if it was small youtubers I like. It wouldn't have been great if it was just actors. It just didn't fit well but whatever, it didn't destroy the movie. Possibly it was just a bit overdone.

I've recently heard this line, in a video about a McDonald's restaurant in Hamburg, where you can drive-through in a boat (you can order through an intercom on a pier and they bring you your food), that it works, where many other similar restaurant startups had failed, because it's McDonald's drive-through. Because people don't want different. They want the same, but with a minor twist, so that it feels like something new, while overly feeling safely familiar.

Not related to the movie, but sort of related to the stereotypes around gaming you mentioned. I would love to see a movie set in a future with a powerful AI where the said AI is just a tool or maybe even a character (although that's not so interesting because it's just like a human then), and not a villain. It's pathetic seeing a final villain reveal in such movies when it's the same plot twist in 99% of movies featuring AI. Both that problems and problems with this movie would be solved if there were directors who are not technophobe.

You should watch Detroit: Become Human. it's an interactive choose-your-adventure game about AI forming their own civil rights movement because they're tired of being slaves to humans and (depending on your choice) they're not technically the bad guys, they're just seen that way by humans cuz of them going against their code, and the characters in the game are well-written and have their own arcs as well. There are no-commentary letsplays on KZfaq so you can watch it like a movie.

Interesting video and how it may or may not apply IRL. Here I am 4 months after this was published watching it for the first time. I haven’t seen The Batman, other than GTA Vice City I haven’t played that in years, of course I have seen all the MCU movies. I’ve watched and rewatched Free Guy several times since seeing it once in the theaters based solely on the Shield seen in the movie, catching things in the movie I missed previously. I sat with my 88 year old father who watched Jeopardy religiously and had him watch Free Guy. He recognized Alex Trebek but didn’t know his name or even “see” the Jeopardy segment; just knowing there was this guy in the movie he knew he had seen before. He didn’t pick up on any of the references in the movie and this was after explaining the concept of an NPC before watching it. My mother has watched all the MCU movies with me but can’t remember any specifics about them. She enjoyed Free Guy, though the animated violence put her to sleep. She also didn’t pick up on most references except those relating to MCU movies; she didn’t recognize Chris Evans though. I, by and large, had no clue that the featured gamers were actual gamers since I don’t follow online games, however I did understand what they represented in the movie. I may have seen the Lego movie, but wasn’t impressed with it at the time enough to even remember the similarities to Free Guy. It’s interesting that someone picked up on it. I don’t sign up for free trials often, but when I do I cancel long before the trial period is up (unless I plan to stick with them). Privacy sounds interesting but seems like it’s nothing more than a phishing attempt at getting my personal information.

Not gonna lie, the suggestion you made about seeing a movie from a criminal's perspective being hunted by Batman sounds dope AF. They're making a new Batman Animated Series soon that is heavily inspired from Batman TAS so maybe it's a possibility we'd see something like that.
