Make With Tech (MakeWithTech)

Күн бұрын

In the first two videos of this series, I introduced my viewers to the basics of FreeCAD. In this video, I demonstrate how to produce a practical 3d printed solution to a common home office problem.
Learn how to model a 3d printed cable holder in FreeCAD.
You can download FreeCAD at freecadweb.org/
Please join the discussion at the free MakeWithTech community discussion group located at forum.drvax.com.
Let's continue to learn together.

Dr. Vax, you are a well spoken man who enunciates very clearly.. Your step by step instructions do not skip out any details.Your videos are well edited. You can take a software program like FreeCAD and make something that looks quite daunting and strip it down into its basic components. Well done. I took note of the different mouse designs and tried different kinds (wired, wireless) and they really make a difference. One thing I noticed is that most of my icons are grayed out compared with your toolbars. Maybe a quick lesson on that would be beneficial. To add a new sketch I had to go the long way around. I hope you will carry on your FreeCAD tutorials to include drawing with curves ,arcs, and circles.

I really like these tutorials, and always learn something from them. Your presentation style is very good, well laid out and paced very well. The introduction of background material is also very effective, digging into the "why" rather than just saying "click here." Working toward a prestated objective helps us focus on the end product and see all of our actions as leading toward that end. i have experienced a number of very poorly done videos on FreeCad, and I wish every one of those producers of ineffective content would take a moment to learn how to do it right from Mr Shapiro.

Oh your trick with the plastic container and that rechargeable dehumidifier thing, works really well, cuts humidity in the box to the mid 20's within a few hours, nice for storing a few spools or doing a slow dry on them. Once I make the mesh to a solid, then refine the image, I end up with a nice solid, but I can't figure out how to make it so that I can constraint the lines to add the dimensions and end up with a working sketch. This way I can put the dimensions into a spreadsheet and make the part parametric. Can you help?

Thanks so much for your great videos. I've watched 5 or 6 now and have been impressed by each one. You thoroughly teach each one at just the right pace, at least for me. As a retired Industrial Arts and math teacher and also a Technology Director for the last 15 years of my educational career, I've attended and taught a lot of workshops . Yours are always spot on! Please keep up your wonderful mission! I just got started with 3D printing about 3 weeks ago because I needed a way to put my arduino projects in something useful. After watching your 3 videos on FreeCAD, I designed a bearing support block incorporating a counterbored bearing hole with another 2 holes along the bottom for mounting. Couldn't have done it without you. BTW, I'm probably one of your worst students. You know the guy that never waited for the teacher to stop teaching before they started the project - and then needed help? Well, that's me. Replaying the video is great for me. Thanks again!

I’m german and first of all I want to thank you not only for this very helpful tutorials, but also for speaking slowly and clearly. I can understand you very well and yes, I learned a lot. I will give freeCAD a 2nd try. I think it needs a lot of practice to deal with the patterns. I would be totally confused to see the wholes far away. And I would have tried to define the 2nd whole instead of the last one. But you showed the right way, thanks! But one thing in my opinion is a bit annoying: after giving the hint, that this video is part of a series which should be watched one after the other, you repeat parts of the former episodes. Keep on teaching please and stay healthy!

I usually do the testing stuff at the end, when the design is done. It is fairly easy as you just create a sketch and cut away the obsolete stuff. Then I export the leftover. When I am done I simply remove the pocket and have final design again. This is very handy, when you have multiple elements you need to test. In your case if you want to test the cable slots I would cut them from the model and print them standalone, too. Since there are no measurements or constrains involved the cutting sketches are quick and easy done. Just draw freehand lines and done.

Yep. You will need supports inside and between the cable clips but set the support density down to about 5% -- since they do not have to be perfect and you want them to be easy to remove.
