Between 1976 and 2003, 14 Concorde aircraft jointly developed by France and England epitomized aerodynamic elegance and aviation luxury, allowing passengers to cross the Atlantic in a mere three hours, at twice the speed of sound. Then on July 25, 2000, Air France Flight 4590 crashed shirtly after take off from Charles de Gaulle airport, in Paris, killing all 109 people aboard and another four people in a hotel hit during the fiery crash. Both British Airways and Air France grounded their Concordes in 2003. The main factors: too expensive too loud. A ticket on the Concorde: $12,000 or € 10,000 (at that time) Maintenance time after each flight: It required 22 hours of maintenance for every hour in the air, compared with eight hours for a 747 and six and a quarter for a 777. And according to a recent study, it cost $1,814 per seat to break even on the Concorde, as opposed to $357 on a 400-seat 747 and $390 on a 275-seat Airbus A340. The Concorde carried a cockpit crew of three instead of two, and it lacked cargo capacity. Crew members worked fewer hours than on subsonic planes and their training was almost twice as long as that of other pilots, and hence more costly. Not allowed to fly over land because of the noise. Check in tomorrow and I’ll introduce you to a new supersonic jet in the works, testing underway now ish

Idk why people say that. Concorde was such a magnificent thing. It was like no other. It was an ERA. And even the A380 has more than 2 people in its crew. God. If u can bring back boom overture I don't see why concorde was banned in the first place. And tf, bruh. Go ask those pilots who trained for concorde they simply describe it as marvelous. America and not just America but every other nation was just jealous that they didn't have a supersonic plane of their own.

You can really see clearly from the actual footage taken by an observer of the doomed Concorde just how large the flames trailing the aircraft were. There is also the final striking photo of her, apparently taken from the side of the runway, in a nose-up attitude just after takeoff, also illustrating the scale of the problem the crew had to deal with. Very sad.

A piece of metal from a DC-10 fell onto the runway and then was kicked up into the fuel tank of the Concorde later. The resulting fire and crash doomed the Concorde program for good. The DC-10 is such a cursed aircraft that it destroys other aircraft types. The fortune tellers in Macbeth said that one day a DC-10 would drop a piece of metal onto the runway at takeoff, and the resulting crashed airplane would cause the end of that type forever.

2 tons of fuel just to taxi to the runway? That's crazy. Makes you wonder why they didn't just tow it to the runway... but I'm sure there are reasons.

It is a lot of fuel and they made a mistake I believe. The actual figure was three tons. He was gonna use the fuel to get to new york as quick as he could. He just topped off the entire airplane. Every single drop he could get.

He also filled the tanks to 100% capacity when the standard operating procedure is to top them up to 83% he overrode that protection. So if the tank had airspace, it would not have blown from inside out To make things worse fuel pumps and valves were on. They knew centre of gravity was too far rearward so wanted the COG to move forward ASAP

He was in for the struggle of his life due to his own Deceit. You just can't throw on two thousand pounds of extra bags in the back and always get away With it. That's one reason that the plane rose nose high first before crashing. But most importantly he needed to turn it around and go into the wind. He had a 10 knot tail wind... The limiting Factor Was ironically the gear retraction speed. You knew we could get away with that one but the trash on the runway made it otherwise.

40:25 for me this is what I think caused that terrible accident. I fully blame those in the Air traffic control for not signaling to the pilot as early as possible about the visible huge flames, so that he cannot take off. Pure carelessness and negligence.

I thought they stopped using them , didn't know they still used them in France and England I I remember one of those flying over my house ,it was the only way they could come in , it was the first and last time one landed there. I also remember hearing a load boom at some point , I can't remember if during landing or take off What I do remember is my house shaking like it was a tumor happening,a couple of windows cracked I had watched planes take off or land depending on weather. I lived on the flight path , other planes their tail section didn't look so low to the ground,the Concord had a strange angle to me and it looked like it was going to fall from the sky , all I could think of was "don't fall on my dang house ! " I thought they were to big and made to much noise myself

4:18 that retired Concorde pilot John Hutchinson obviously has a soft spot for the Concorde and rightfully so. But the facts are that there were design compromises made with the Concorde that made it too sensitive to damage from blown tires and this had happened previously and was very nearly the same result. A weakness had been identified, measures should have been taken to increase robustness and they were not. The crash was the result.

Although I tend to agree that that the fuel tank lining and bullet proof cable wiring etc made Concorde safer it was the wheel shrapnel or the water deflector that caused the damage in Washington. BA then updated their water deflectors by tethering them internally so they wouldn't fly up and puncture the wing. Air France never did this. New specification of tyres were then fitted after Washington also. Piece of the water deflector was found on the runway in CDG if it made contact with another fuel tank has not been discussed. But had the spacer not been missing forcing the plane of the runway then the crew could have used all the available runway gaining valuable speed. I really want to find the Washington incident report. I've read that the crew also couldn't retract the landing gear so it would be worthwhile to compare the two incidents

Until I watched this particular documentary, I had been under the impression that this was the very last flight of any Concorde. I thought the others had already been decommissioned and this was the last one left in service.

No, just 1 had been decommissioned some years earlier, the rest were still in service. Also, the accident aircraft was actually the very Concorde used in the filming of Airport '79.

The Seattle Boeing Museum of Flight has one of the concordes on exhibit. You can board it and see the cabin and cockpit. It is very small inside, seats very small. Pretty cool. They have a lot of cool planes you can board. Including a former airforce 1. And a space shuttle simulator. Great place to visit in Seattle if you are into aviation history.

I went there a couple years ago, I remember as comment that my cousin made to me after seeing the Concord seating area, she said " I don't think Grandpa can fit in these seats." I know what she means that my grandpa is a very chubby guy that wouldn't be stuck in it.

The Concorde was way ahead of its time. The technology required to make it economically viable just wasn't available at the time. If there was the technology to fit it with more fuel efficient engines and reduce the noise of the sonicboom then it might have worked. I don't think the excess fuel and weight contributed to the accident. The foreign debris strike was bad enough that the airplane would have gone down no matter what. The plane would have been OK if it hadn't hit the debris, even though it was overweight.

Everything went wrong in a microsecond, what a terrible tragedy, that plane was absolutely doomed. Beautiful plane, unforgettable, 50's nuclear-fueled utopias powers had at the time pushing time technology to the very literal limits.

One of the most beautiful airplanes that have ever graced the skies. Sure, it was expensive to fly on and Sure also it flew way faster than almost every plane in the air, but just look at the experience that could be enjoyed and also look at all the bragging rites One could accumulate from saying they've flew on such an awesome plane. I can assure you that I would have almost sold my soul just to get a ride on this beauty.

@@nataliemscrzysxycoolharris All jokes aside, the airport allowed it. All airport runways should be checked between flights bc it's actually common for there to be debris. Accidents like this prove that runways must be kept clean. They can take a few minutes between planes to look. I live near an airbase. They share runways with a large airport. There are employees hired specifically to watch the runways between flights to keep them clear.

The excess taxi fuel and the extra baggage weren't really a factor in this accident. Once that fuel caught fire, there was no saving this plane. It was a blowtorch cutting its way through the control systems and surfaces. If they had not been there, it would not have mattered. It was the overfilled fuel tanks and that strip of metal that are the key factors in this. Remove one or the other, and this accident likely doesn't happen.

Perhaps, but the weakness of the design to tolerate blown tire debris is the root cause engineering failure. It's possible that removing any of the three would have prevented this accident, but the design weakness meant that anytime that the tanks were overfilled and/or they hit debris on a runway it would happen. Better for the airframe to tolerate a blown tire then to expect a blown tire to never happen.

For me I see no reason why the pilot had to take her off the ground. It's clear the flames started when the plane had not yet really reached takeoff speed. What were those on the Air traffic control doing and not tell the pilot to avoid takeoff??

@@billrussells2521 Because they had passed V-1, which means they couldn't stop the plane before it ran off the tarmac even if they took the engines back to idle.

It resulted in the centre of gravity becoming too rearward which is why they left the fuel transfer valves on during the take off. Against standard operating procedure. Furthermore Concorde was over its maximum structural take off weight

@jameshisself9324 you can call it a design flaw but I think that's up for discussion. This aircraft was designed for mach2 speed. The wing needed to be very thin. Every design has its pros and cons. Don't forget the airplane flew for 24 years without an accident. On British Airways side the risk of blown tires and subsequent damage to the wing was mitigated by making sure no re treated tires were used. As far as I understand AF didn't follow BA in that decision.

Why is it too late to stop (I know their speed dictates, but the plane is on fire…)? Is it not better to at least try to stop / crash while on the ground versus taking off knowing. it is going to crash? I think the people in the hotel they crashed into would agree with me

He didn’t know. He likely thought it was just an engine issue and decided to take off. I’m sure if he knew he was ablaze he wouldn’t have taken off. If I have 4 Rolls Royce engines at my disposal and I believe that only one has failed, I’d continue my take off as well. However if I KNOW I’m on fire, no way in hell do I take off. Just depends on what’s known to me.

If you watch carefully the video, you wouldn't ask that question.After they reach V1 ( Velocity 1) about 140knot, they can no longer abort take off. If they abort the take off the plane would be crash anyway because they had too short runway ahead of them to stop in time due to V1 speed and exceeding the runway will end up crashing against the trees of house/building around the airport. By the way, if the pilot willing to force to abort the take off,it will damage and blast the wheel, either way they will end up crashing if they choose to abort the take off after V1.

Exactly my point. The moment the flame ignited, they were not yet at takeoff speed, so why did the Air traffic control not tell the pilot about the gravity of the flame so he doesn't takeoff?? crashing on the ground is way better than taking off while knowing you are still going to crash.

@@billrussells2521 It is not as cut and dry as “plane has issue. Pilot knows exactly what the issue is. Pilot reacts with the correct evasive action”. Similar to the miracle on the Hudson, all “experts” say that he could have made it back to the airport, which is true IF he had turned back immediately. But as we all know, that simply wasn’t the case. ATC controls air traffic and keeps planes from hitting each other. They have zero jurisdiction on what pilots do in the cockpit. Just because an engine is on fire does not mean the plane will crash. 99% of planes that are forced to take off with one non operable engine return back to the airport safely. Therefore as the Pilot of this particular flight, there was no reason to believe that after a flameout of just 1 of 4 engines that they couldn’t just take off and return to back to the airport to sort things out. Edit: keeping in mind that they were on fire. If they abort that takeoff and crash on the ground, at 183 knots (roughly 210 mph) they most certainly crash in a twisted ball of fire and everyone perishes as a result. Taking off were their BEST course of action. The only lives that likely would have been spared were those innocent soles in the hotel. The whole thing was just simply a tragedy.

To say the pilot took off not knowing he had a blow torch of a fire trailing his left wing is incorrect, there is ATC audio of the tower controller advising AF4590 you have fire/flame from your left wing and advising him of return to field options or alternate options.

There's a point during take at which the aircraft is going too fast and there's too little runway left that the aircraft must take off. The pilots had no option.

I've never understood why the pilot didn't try to land on that highway which was right under them? Yeah, I know it probably would have hit and killed some people in cars but chances were much better that the 100 people on the plane would have had a better chance of survival.

In this case, they never got the chance to try. The moment they became aware of the problem, it was too late to abandon takeoff safely. And by then, the plane already so badly damaged that they didn’t have enough control to bring it down safely.

Thats a very definitive statement. U cant know that. Quite possibly not. Quite possibly the crash wouldnt have happened, if any1 of the many tiny links in the chain had been changed. Thats the thing about these accidents. Unless it is something like very definitive like a bomb, its never just 1 cause, its the Swiss cheese model of many many many tiny little holes, that all have to line up for it to happen. In this case, sadly it did. But claiming that it happened just due to the direction of takeoff is completely missing the point.

1) Frank Lorenzo 2) Lorenzo’s shoddy maintenance on Continental Air. 3) A part of a Continental plane falling off and landing on the runway in front of Concorde 4) Concorde hitting said part, flew up, hitting fuel tank, causing fire and crash 5) Frank Lorenzo Is a murderer. Did he pay……..NO. Is he dead? NO! Should he be? God yes!

You expect us to believe tires designed or in this case for concorde over designed could have a piece cut off by some metal loose on the runway from another plane ... if that were the case then i would have to change my car's tires every time I went up the road and back. This was 100 percent down to captain error and pressure from the renting company.
