The fastest way to get faster on drums:
►Drumeo.com/faster/
Growing up playing drums in the church, Rashid Williams wasn’t allowed to have a double pedal. So he had to learn how to play quickly using just one foot. Watch this short video to pick up some of Rashid’s tips to playing crazy fast on a single pedal!
His technique involves playing with his toes (or ‘heel up’) and a higher pedal tension so the pedal moves with him and achieves better rebound when he’s playing at higher speeds. Rashid describes the motion for a triple stroke as similar to what you’d do with a double stroke, but getting your foot to ‘throw’ the third hit by using the pedal’s rebound.
So play a double stroke, and instead of pushing the beater into the head at the end of the second hit (‘burying the beater’), let the beater bounce back naturally. Then hit it again.
Once you get the motion down, practice this foot technique with just a kick, snare, and hi-hat. You can try exercises like repeating triplets on your foot (RRR RRR or RRR RRR RRR RRRRRR) while keeping the snare going on the 2 and 4. Don’t forget your metronome!

I grew up in church music but came to the drumming party late…I was lucky enough to have a DW 5000 double pedal at my last church (!) but I rarely got to use both pedals because of the context of the music (mostly pop-like CCM stuff). Also, I wasn't really able to play grooves that didn't involve hi-hat because certain others in the band relied on it to stay in time and it would throw them off if I changed things. Every now and then I could sneak in some hard/alt rock/metal or hip-hop/funk playing, or throw in double pedal on a big cymbal ending. I agree with some of the other comments that the condition of the pedal makes a difference…that DW 5000 made fast single-foot playing a breeze! But a light touch on the foot always makes playing quick doubles easier.

You have perfected a technique that I thought was impossible. I just immediately readjusted my pedal to single and tried it. After about twenty minutes of adjusting from double to single....I have to admit (no disrespect intended ), it works. Really. I've been drumming some 30+ years and I'd like to think I've got some skills and have made a pretty penny doing so but I ALWAYS want to be a student of music so good sir, I'm on board. Thank you for your insights!

what stands out to me that i find interesting, is that theres no mention of " Slide" technique", where some teach the tap first near midpoint of pedal with ball of foot, and then slide up and stomp down with the whole foot. trying to learn it that way is rather awkward for me, and I find myself wanting to just play both notes with the ball of my foot near the top of pedal; almost like quick hopping motion, and thats what you appear to do here. does that make any sense? ty.
