Pretty standard song composition, he's following every other instrument. They all started to mute so he did as well, especially since he's following the bass line. The same reason he stopped playing at the end. They all stopped playing, so he stopped playing.

Yes! That’s exactly what I thought. I never realized how different a song sounds when it’s not played exactly how I know it.

Yeah, people really underestimate how impactful drummers can be for a band. There are some bands, and songs, that I listen to just for the drummer. It's one of those things where you probably won't notice a "bad" drummer, but you can definitely tell when there's a good drummer.

@@amandalee4778 There's a Japanese band called Toe (post-rock) who has my favorite drummer. You can check out their song "Goodbye" which has, in my opinion, one of the best drum parts recorded for a song of any genre. Hyakkei is another band which was founded by that drummer. Saosin's first EP album is another one that I like the drumming on. They're an emo, post-hardcore band that hired a session drummer for their first EP but he absolutely kills. "Seven Years" is a good song that really shows his chops. Of course, there's a variety of metal bands with insane drumming. I like Animals as Leaders just to hear how Matt's drumming keeps up with Tosin's guitar-work.

Be like Dirk, keep your mind open and try to leave your comfort zone as much as you can, thats really one of the easiest way to improve your playing. Its also much more fun that constantly sticking to the same set of skills and styles

I studied classical music, then was the singer in a couple of metal bands in the 90's, then grunge, then another pop-rock band in the mid 2000's, then a jazz/bossa nova band about 10 years ago. I'm a couple of years younger than this guy. I love Paramore, but I have no clue what some very VERY famous pop acts are. I've never (knowingly) listened to Kanye West (even though I know who he is), until a couple of months ago I thought Olivia Rodrigo was the girl who sang "My Heart is In Havana" and I missed the whole emo-core scene, except Paramore, which I first heard of when they weren't even calling themselves "emo" anymore. He's not american, neither am I. It's pretty easy to miss american pop culture if you don't live there, even if you're a musician, and especially if you work in another segment of the industry. Anyway, just my 2 cents. :)

The scenario of hearing about paramore and not their biggest song, I don't think it's too farfetched that it couldn't happen. Normally, there is a fairly straight-forward pattern to most songs with few exceptions (looking at you, Tool). Once you pick up where music tends to drop out and pick up, it gets easier to play. Now, I am certainly not downplaying Dirk's abilities. He is awesome. That's why he and the others that do this on Drumeo are professionals, and I'm a basement drummer.

He's great but he far from nailed the part. He just played a standard rock beat over the tune. He missed all the 8th note hits etc that kind of make the drum part.

4/4 Hi-hat, snare, bass drum is hardly nailing it. I love Dirk, but he could have used the rest of the drum kit and not just keep it "keyboard 4/4 pop drum preset".

I mean, how the hell could you fault him for playing the most basic pop/rock drums over this song when that's just exactly what the song is? If you'd never heard it, would you do it any different, really? He crushed it. Nice little fills here and there, a bit of his personal shenanigan with the blast beats, it was incredibly good for a one time - one play situation. Didn't like the snare sound with the song, but that's really not his fault or anyones, just a matter of taste. I would have loved to hear a second or third playthrough of his where he experiments a bit more, but for what it is it is insanely good.

He seems like such a chill dude. I'm jealous of his vibe.

GOD, I love that quote. It reminds me of Freddie Mercury while they were recording The Show Must Go On. Brian May was worried that he wouldn't be able to pull it off- the vocals would be tough for Mercury at his best, let alone when he was dying of AIDS. Freddie did a shot of vodka, said "I'll fucking do it, darling", and did it... perfectly. One take.

Even the great Neil Peart from Rush never considered himself the finished article, and always strived to improve and be better. I always admired his humility as a drummer, despite him being total god-tier at the instrument. Dirk has the right idea, and his head screwed on right. He's a superb drummer though, to be sure!

No not mature. Playing and technically proficiency? Absolutely. Zac and Josh and Hayley were amazing together - this song is basically all of them doing their best to be the main focus of the song at all times and all of them succeeding. But behind the scenes was nothing but drama. Josh and Hayley dating, Hayley's manager father trying to cut the Farro's out of the band and making them like contractors, the addition of Taylor York and the drama that caused with Josh and accusations of Taylor's drug abuse IIRC, the break up and ensuing relationship strains, Josh's religious over-compensation and broaching in to unfair entitlement and bitterness. It's honestly a wonder they barely got through Brand New Eyes before splintering. The band without the brothers Farro was no where near as good or strong. Zac's return was great. I understand why they keep their distance from Josh though.

@@amfam100I think it’s still the case to this day. I know of a few death metal bands that have classically trained members. I heard a long time ago that metal is reminiscent of classical music. A lot of classical pieces are really intense so it kind of makes sense that they would gravitate to equally or more intense music.

To be fair emopunk and megadeth arnt really thaaat far apart. I was full blown emo in the 2000s and megadeth was one of my favourite bands whilst I also listened paramore, parkway drive and afi ect

I would say they are adjacent in terms of genres. Metal and punk (emo or not) are similar.

How I heard it explained is that people that are great at something aren't choosing it just because they love it, they choose it because they believe that they can do better.

He played in Scarve, and did incredible stuff with Soilwork. So the OP is correct. Also "technically" Megadeth are "Thrash Metal, " not "Classic Metal." If you are going to attempt to correct someone, make sure you are right.

Chads version of The Kill is awesome and it’s amazing watching him listen for a few seconds then jumping straight into it; However, it does sound like pretty much spot on to the original track.

The only part I feel most technical drummers miss, and that drummers from punk and hardcore use and abuse is open hihat vs crashing the ride. Sometimes you have to bang those cymbals.

Megadeth's style is derived from punk music.
