I do steel cable ziplines as well for permanent installations. But for single day social events like scout camps in remote areas, or a one weekend zipline in the back yard for the kids. Cement poles and steel cables are not practical. All of the equipment used in the video is rated for life support working at height. But different scenarios definitely call for different ziplines. Free Fallin Chad Brey and Timmy Womack do a thing called tree circus I volunteer at Sacramento State fair every year and their motto is if you can walk you can climb it was a 70-year-old blind lady who is send it 10 feet in the air since then that is the story that I stick to true story I didn’t take any photos due to respect of the woman and her company they later told me that please share the story LOL I said no it’s better for people to get a visual on their mind because she is blind so they have to see things from her eyes to.

That's fantastic! Some people don't need trees, but those that do can get a tremendous amount of benefits from programs like that. I would love to open a climbing center someday that sponsors fee based and charity climbs.

Free Fallin i’ve seen videos in the UK where they have tree climbing parties for kids and they do things like put 45 kids in a big tree and then tie balloons to their feet and they get to basically kick each other and pop the balloons without seriously injure each other.

Brian Trudeau thanks for commenting! For the least damage to the trees I like doing temporary ziplines for a day or an event, and using rope. There is usually no need to protect the bark since rope doesn't cut like cable, and there is no movement against the tree. For more permanent installations, yes cable is best. Using blocks is fine for a short term solution but bolting through a trunk will put less stress on the tree for ziplines that are going to get left in place.

Thanks for replying so quickly. If I am installing a permanent zip line however, would you recommend steel cables and blocks to protect the bark if they are trees I care about ?

Keep in mind that the only living part of the tree is that cambium layer and bark around the outside. The wood inside is all dead and can't really be hurt. So even with blocks you are risking damage to that outer layer. For a permanent installation the best way is a large eye bolt all the way through the trunk with a good sized washer and double nut on the back. That way it touches as little of the bark as possible and can be loosened as the tree grows. Blocks are better than strapping to the tree directly, they would be a decent second choice.

Arborist rope is harder to cut than hardware store rope, and is abrasion resistant, but it is still made from similar material and can be cut with a blade.

TreeCraft by Andrew I used to do graphic design so I have Adobe Fireworks, the real images just came from google, and i just saved it several times as i drew the picture and added the still shots to the video. you could do the same with Ms paint or any graphics program.

Hi Sara, 300 feet is a long run, that should make for a happy dog. It's hard to give advice without more info, but - You will want a line that does not stretch, I would use a steel cable, fastened with at least two cable clamps on each end. If you are fastening the ends to trees, it depends on how long this run will be there, if less than a year, you might be able to use axle straps from an auto store, if longer I would bolt into the tree trunk. Hopefully this gets you started.

Chee Kay great observation! The system in the video is a 4:1 IDEAL mechanical advantage system. People use ideal to describe them because the actual calculation is next to impossible to predict and can only be found out by testing the system under load, and even then the actual MA changes as tension changes. To reach ideal MA a system would need to have 0 friction in all parts, 0 stretch, and exact angles. This would make my system actual 4:1 MA. People generally speak in ideal MA for convenience. If we were to ignore friction and stretch in the calculation and just look at the rope angles on that one pulley, you would still have 2:1 MA on one leg. Then the question becomes the angle coming off the main pulley, guessing let's say 45°. Guessing again, let's say that only gives us 1.75:1 actual MA. Multiply that by the 2:1 we already know about and the system would be 3.5:1 actual MA, throw back in friction, stretch, tension, gravity, earth rotation, etc. And you wind up with some actual number lower than that. But ain't nobody but NASA got time for that, so we have to say it's a sloppy 4:1 ideally. Hope this helps, climb on!

This is actually a 6:1 theoretical MA by counting points of tension. Obviously you will not achieve this. As far as forces go at 120 degrees in this configuration each anchor will receive 100% of the load

Hi Germano thank you for watching! To keep kids safe you should install a brake on the steel cable to slow people down at the end. Then set the height so that the kids do not hit the ground, or get stuck in the air. I usually put the end at around 2 5m. Steel cable is great for permanent installations, I've used it a lot. Rope is better for temporary ziplines and remote locations.

Thanks, "log him up" is killing me 🤣 I use rope for ziplines if it is temporary, like 1-3 days for an event because it can weaken with long term UV exposure. Steel cables are best for seasonal or longer term ziplines. There are a couple things to think about with cables. 1. Buy one that can handle 3,000+ lbs at a minimum for adults to use, the longer or higher it is, the stronger you need to cover added forces and increase risk. 2. Trees are only "alive" around the outside inch or 2 of the trunk. It is better to put a large eye bolt through a tree with a big washer on the back, than it is to wrap the outside if it will be installed for more than a few weeks. If it IS going to be short term, use a piece of garden hose on the wire to protect the cambi layer of the tree. 3. Steel does not stretch to give you a slow landing. It goes fast and you will stop when you hit the end 😵. Plan on making a braking system at the end of the line to slow people down. A large block on the line with bungee cords to let it slide and slow works great. Have fun!

I highly recommend strapping at least 2-3 chihuahuas into the harness to get enough mass, you can also consider altering the diet of your 1 chihuahua to include at least 10 tacos al carbon each day. You couldn't even make it right without running into the ground and you really beat a dead horse when talking about what tree is good or not. To use a big sizable tree is all that matters.
