Washington “allegedly” turned his back on him when he was imprisoned in France by ignoring Paine’s request for a letter of clemency because he didn’t want to upset negotiations with the british crown. Hopefully his statue is placed somewhere he can keep a watchful eye on George this time around.

"Dirty little athiest?" I always regarded Teddy Roosvelt as one of our better presidents. His comment about Thomas Paine was definitely not to his credit, however.

$2,500,000.00 to put up a statue? I wonder how many people are enriching themselves in this effort.

@@mikewiitala9462 perhaps we could ask for an accounting of this. The land might be one expense. The materials, the labor for the workers and artist, cost of the administration associated with government regulations and such.

@@mikewiitala9462 I think it would be fair to have an itemized list of the costs up front. It would help in my decision. Without it, well... I see the point of the skepticism.

I don't like the idea of spending that much for a statue. Can't we think of any other way of honoring him that won't cost that much? True he helped that much but earth's resources are for the living. Many mouths can be fed with that amount, house many homeless, pay school fees of deserving poor kids. I can think of thousand ideas where to put that money but statue wont make it to the list

Deism seems to be far from Atheist maybe I'm wrong but I don't like most of the founding fathers 🤷🏿‍♂️

The critical difference is the vision the founding fathers had for this nation didn't involve the promotion of sectarian faith. No establishment of any official religious body, or sect. This even in its lofty purpose was seen as something to push against. Religion, particularly doctrine alienates, isolates and separates us into factions. It goes nowhere. The right to believe in one's own doctrine or not to believe is endangered by the assertions of various sectarian views.

I hear you! Some of them were deplorable, but a lot of their ideas and motivations were solid (despite their lifestyles). Now, Atheism and Deism are both positions one can take in America without immediately being killed for blasphemy. I'm not saying that all Deists were secretly Atheists, but long ago, Deism was a position an Atheist could claim and still be (at least somewhat) socially accepted! Think of the vast number of atheists who for social reasons claim they are agnostic - just so they aren't condemned or abused by their neighbors. Deism was cool like that back in the day!
