Today known as Smithfield Meat Market, this site has been the location of the butchery of both animals and humans since the Middle Ages. It was the favorite site for the executions ordered by Bloody Mary. However, arguably the most famous execution was of William Wallace, and Sinead will take you there.

One of the most successful groups of body snatchers in London were called "The London Burkers" Named after the Burke, of Burke & Hare. Amongst the London Burkers was named James May. Wonder if a certain other James May (Ex-Top Gear / Grand Tour) is a descendant?

I love these tours. I will never get to London to see for myself, so this is wonderful. I am so appalled at how cruel human beings can be to other people and every living thing. The torturers and executioners are no worse than the crowds that watched and cheered these horrific and barbaric exections.

Drawn was not dragging through the streets. It refers to the act of drawing his intestines out of his body. In England this act whether practiced on humans or animals has always been known as drawing

I have just stumbled upon this channel today, and as a lifelong Anglophile and British history nerd, I am loving it! Subscribed. As for video ideas, I have a few: 1) I am quite the Arthurian fanatic, so any videos around that topic would be wonderful. 2) I would love to see a tour of the remnants of Roman London (Londinium). 3) A Tudor tour would be fantastic as well, as it is a very popular topic. It’s amazing how much of the Tudor reign is still with us today. 4) A tour of King’s Road (with its history of birthing the punk movement). 5) And finally, a tour of the Great Fire would be nice, as you have touched on it in videos here and there. Throw in a little of Nell Gwyn and you have yourself quite the story! Thanks again for making all of these videos for those of us who live vicariously through them. Keep up the good work!

Years ago I lived In London and toured some of these streets not knowing enough about the places I was seeing. Now I’m in my late eighties and have great difficulty walking : that’s where your well informed tours are such a benefit and interesting to take part in.

Just discovered this channel. This was far and beyond the best presentation of Smithfield I've ever seen. The walking tour is the next best thing to actually visiting the area in person. The William Wallace execution site is clearly placed in context with the historical accounts. The location view of the executions of protestants by Queen Mary is amazing. Job well done. Thank you!

@@leary210275 ERIN GO BRAGH. Looking forward to the Irish Vids. My family is originally from Mallow north of Cork. They came to the US in the early 1900's. I went to Dublin for work in 2013 but didn't have time to visit south. Can't way to see what you will show us.

Hi, I had a hand in the renovations of Smithfield which I think was in the late 90’s, early 2000’s (?). The first phase was opened by the Queen’s Mother upon completion. If I remember rightly there is at least three underground levels to Smithfield which had its own railway station once I was told and there is a winding road by that park for access to these levels. I’m a welder and we fitted the new steelwork, some of the original cast ironwork was removed and I believe one of the managers ended up with some of the columns which he used at his home (?). A very fascinating building of which I’m proud to have had a hand in its history.

Hello, Fantastic video! My gosh I didn't know that men could sell their wives at Smithfield Market, what a horror, poor women. Ooh, how very grim and grisly and sadistic bloody Queen Mary was and burning kittens with the poor Protestants as well 😢 What with the horror of Wallace's torture to death and the burnings of living souls, I am not surprised it's haunted. I visited London for the last time in january 2020 and i've walked in front of the Smithfield market gate on my way to St Bartholomew the great. ( wonderful church btw)it was during the day between 10 and 10:30 am and the entrance gave me chills. In winter, in a gloomy day it looks like the dark open mouth of sinister creature. It is a very strange building from outside I didn't have the courage to walk inside. And I didn't know anything about what you taught us today. I am sure that i will no go there if i am able to visit the city again. Excellent tour . From a person who miss London with every fiber of her heart thank you very much
