Shelstone Tor, Dartmoor is a stunning place to camp, but freezing winds drove us down into the valley below.
Si (@rialobran)and I instead headed to a valley we could see from atop the tor for a bit of exploration and to see if we could find a suitably sheltered spot for our overnight wild camp. Si with his new OneTigris Smokey HUT and me with my 3F UL Gear ZhengTu 2, found ourselves with a stunning sheltered spot for the night.
While Si hunkered down, I got to try out my new Naturehike Down Trousers and a new headtorch, the H11 from Sunblesa.

Looked like a great camp, what a lovely spot, yet another one for the list! This week’s episode of what has Daniel forgotten…. 😂🤣 jeez you need a pack list lol!! I might buy some down trousers… I keep looking lol! So glad you had a great camp! What a frosty old morning! Twas bloody freezing Saturday night, I barely slept lol!!

During the late Spring I reckon it’ll be a 5* pitch. Definitely probably maybe gonna go back there again. I have a packing list, I packed the pillow. Kind of. It rolled out of my pack. Found it on the bedroom floor when I got home 😂 The trousers are awesome Karen. Even if they’re not long enough for you, you could cinch the bottom around your leg and pull some socks over the top? I don’t envy you (or anyone else) bivvying that night. Was bitter enough for me.

It was a great camp. The Smokey HUT is massive, can’t believe how much space there is. I was happily sat inside on my Big Agnes stool too, the vertical space is amazing

@KernowCamps yeah I used to sit in my full blown chair in mine with an inner inside. Great for wet weather. Shame I put a hole through the roof 😂

I like it, but no tent envy here... I can only see "hole through the roof" complications arising from it, at least if it were in my hands. I reckon Si might be a bit smarter with it

@KernowCamps it was partially my fault. I always use a half tennis ball to spread the stress point but forgot it in high winds and due the the high winds the pole tip moved out ofnthe reinforced section and went straight through. Luckily though I had a full flame alcohol stove on the go inside that nearly set the tent on fire as it collapsed around me and it was also snowing just to add to the drama 🤣

Camped 2 weeks ago in snowdonia Park. didn't take a thermometer but it was bloody cold... Didn't take the mongar 2, used my smaller eurohike tunnel tent. Too big a space to keep warm... Great video, cheers

Bet that was proper chilly! Also, aside from the space to warm up, the Mongar 2 is a poor option for winter camps. Far too much ventilation on all sides. Glad you survived the night meht!

Si is an absolute top bloke meht. You and I ought to arrange something for late May onwards bud! We were supposed to do one last summer i think, never got round to it. Can't remember how I described the teens now, probably something derogatory knowing me!

Hoping to be down and around Roos tor 18th March overnight, however they are reports of a very cold March on the way ! Still, keeps the "part timers" away ? Always love the vids and now also subscribed to Si's channel .

Reckon you should be good bud, mid March should still be cold enough to keep the “part timer” away, even if the weather is mild for March. Si won’t be happy, he doesn’t like it when people sub to his channel 😂

I' till looking at another tent; I have this hot tent one tigriss for 3 years, it weights less than 0.5kg, and i get too the inside mesh for summer... Only thing is the big ground print needed but even set up on non flat grounds, the multi pitching points make it easy to set up and adjust... Natural air convection, but nightmare when you set it pu and all bugs and flies are trapped at the top inside the tent and you can't open a small window to let them escape. the only bad point which makes me bad.. have to wait evening not to hear them crazy hitting and turning until they are dead... It is really hard to find spacious tents under 1kg. the said to be ultralight are coffins of more than one kg...Still chasing unicorn, allowing too to put inside all enduro bike gears ...
