Join me on a short winter hike and camp to Roos Tor on Dartmoor, where things didn't go as planned. With low visibility, I got lost and ended up walking in circles. To make things worse, I got cold and soaked to the bone as my waterproofs failed.
While I managed to find my way to Great Staple Tor, the heavy rain, wind, and thick fog proved too much for me. I struggled to pitch my 3F UL Gear ZhengTu 2 tent in the wind, and disaster struck twice. First, my new Sierra Designs Flex Capacitor had an issue that affected my Flames Creed Ice Flame Quilt. Then, I realised I left my sleep pad at home, which led to me bailing on the camp. I was absolutely gutted.
Join me on this adventure and learn from my mistakes to ensure your safety and comfort in the outdoors.

Good effort mate even though it didn't go to plan. As you said it's better to be safe than sorry and cut your losses in those situations. At least you got out and enjoyed yourself that's the main thing 😁👍

Absolutely! I had a blast, despite feeling like I was up against everything. I got home and was in a surprisingly good mood about it all. Usually when I've had to bail on a camp I go home in a rotten mood and get stuck that way for a good few days (or longer). Not this time! Thanks for watching buddy

Feel guilty for laughing but that struggle with your tent in that annoying wind was incredibly entertaining. After all that heroic effort shame you didn't have sleep mat to complete this challenging adventure. Although it was a 'fail' that was a great vid to watch. 😃

I was getting so darned frustrated, and knew have daft I must have looked on video that I had to chuckle at myself. While editing there was a huge part of me that wanted to edit all the stuff out that made me look stupid, but then I'd have had not video left!

Oh mate, what a mare! I have to say though watching you pitch did have me in stitches, I had Trev’s comic music playing in my head! Definitely best call to call it quits, it would have been a very uncomfortable night at the least.

Glad it made you smile meet, I hoped leaving that in would amuse a few folk! So now I've had one good camp at Great Staple Tor (first one), one cold, windy Christmas one, and two failed ones (the first was with you!). Not the best track record for me at Great Staple Tor... I'll be back

Hey Steve, thanks for watching (again)! I keep a foil backed foam roll mat in my boot, and I suppose I could have walked back to the car for it, but the quilt being wet, as well as all my clothes (the ones I was wearing and my spares) being wet really had me on edge about it. I think I made the right choice and really enjoyed the adventure none-the-less.

Well bro we live and learn for sure. I've been out in May at 750 meters before now with no mat and survived the night in a shit bag. Yeah, cold but I'm here. The Jungle blanket is a good bit of kit. I've used it lots of times but in more favorable conditions. I think you made the right choice. You could have survived the night maybe but it's whether or not you were up for the discomfort. Next time then eh? Well, good going for the march in. All the best. Mark

If i had a quilt had been wet, I would have gone back to the car for the foil backed foam roll mat that I have in the boot and tried to tough it out, I really didn't want to go home again. But everything was against me, it seemed, so I took it all as a sign I wasn't meant to sleep on the tor that night! Cheers for watching Mark!

I teach under water nav for divers , one thing i tell divers , dont think you know better than your compass .. I have also said " compass is wrong " .. No , I was wrong.. Still all very good advice mate .. I have become a little "geographically confused" on the Moor once or twice .. Alway better safe than sorry !

I trust my compass, but not the one built into my iPhone, particularly in this area. I've had to walk back from Roos Tor once in the middle of the night when Dave was worryingly cold and frightened by fireworks nearby. Visibility was pretty poor due to heavy rain coming in sideways. OS Maps on my iPhone had me changing direction every 3-5 steps. I was watching as the arrow was doing some kind of break dance on the screen. I stopped, found my compass in my pack and it was bang-on, got back to the car in near no time, safe and sound. I think something in the granite maybe screws with the tech, dunno, but I don't "trust" the tech. Definitely better safe than sorry! 😬

@@KernowCamps It is dependant on what you are using iphone /android... I just googled my S21.. I also some times check in goole maps on my phoe if it is showing me in the correct place .. All that aside , I have a Garmin 66i and rely on that most of the time .. I record my tack and if push comes to shove , I can switch to back track and it will take me back the way I came. Also I download my OS mape route for "offline" viewing , so I dont need a signal.
