I remember I watch this video before that because the truck is leaking from the EGR cooler but now there’s another truck keep missing coolant like what you say in the beginning , coolant, keep missing, but couldn’t see anywhere from outside,thank you for your video. I love it I learn a lot.

Thank you for your videos..I got freightliner cascadia dd15 2016...my coolent temperature going too low ..it doesn't stay at 200 temp.go down all the way to 100 temp. Just happen today.

Thanks for watching. If your driving and coolant temp doesn’t get past 185 than I’d be leaning towards a thermostat. If it gets to 200 and drops low randomly I’d be looking at the wiring/ garage/ or coolant temp sensors. Hope that helps.

If there's no coolant in the hot pipe on the passenger side or when you pull the elbow off the sgr cooler and there's not any coolant then if you have a thermoking tripac apu look at the coolant hoses that run from the cutoff valves to the apu bc the coolant isn't separated. The coolant from the truck always run continuously from the truck to the tripac. NOT THE THERMOKING EVOLUTION. Separate coolant system from the truck. Tripac is the same. Come to find out after all the work the thermoking dealership found out where the coolant was going. The tripac had a bad head gasket causing lost of coolant. That was the problem the whole time. If you don't have a apu be sure to ck your coolant lines that runs to your def tank. Hope some of this will help after changing every coolant line you can think of 😅😅😅

Just curious as to what led you down this path to begin with? Excessive pressure in the cooling system? Loss of coolant (I know this is likely)? What were the symptoms? Yeah, I know the loss of coolant was one but are there other symptoms?

Great question and thanks for asking. Loss of coolant and nothing external let me down this path. Sometimes driver will complain of excessive smoke from the tailpipe but not always as the DPF seems to collect most of it. And a simple check inspection of the EGR crossover pipe and you’ll be able to see if there’s a lot of coolant passing through. Hope that helps

Thanks for reaching out and watching. If your loosing coolant the best thing to do is have the system tested under pressure. Never just assume it’s one part or another. And always ask to see the part intill you trust the shop just to build that relationship.

This is what might be wrong with my truck i have a 2006 freightliner Century with a rebuild engine was installed summer of 2011 I'm losing coolant don't see a leak can smell it and engine running ruff going up hills engine sound lot louder than it should be I'm taking my truck to freightliner shop in Valley, Alabama tomorrow to work on it its 30 minutes from my home

dealer said that if EGR cooler fails than also good practice to replace the DPF filters since now they have been possibly contaminated with coolant. Is that right? started loosing about 1 gallon of coolant per hour. Drove truck all of 40-50 miles to get to dealer. Now they want to charge $1200 to troubleshoot since this requires tear down, 1700 to change EGR cooler, and another 1400 to change both DPFs. These are just labor numbers. doesnt include oil, filters, coolant, EGR cooler, DPFs. Total quote is for 13k. smell a ripoff?

@@AkashG334 thanks for reaching out. I usually don’t replace dpf filters intill after the repair, if the regen fails for high temps out of range. I warn the customer before hand it may come down to replacing them. But majority of the time they pass. The safest and most expensive bet is to replace them but I don’t like to over repair. And egr cooler is 4 hrs to replace and dpfs are 4 hrs as well. Of course this doesn’t include any diag. But parts pricing would be the huge amount here.

Absolutely, along with many other possible leaks. There are so many areas that could cause coolant leaks on these engines. But egr cooler failures are very common on both detroits and Cummins.

Good information just one question after changing egr cooler, I have exhaust leak. You can’t really smell it but under load you can definitely hear it and when engine break is on you can also hear it. Would changing egr cooler have anything to do with it?

Great question and thanks for watching. Where the cooler mounts to either side pipes , one of those might not be lined up properly. Clamps may be secure and tight but if the pipes aren’t set perfect it’ll make that noise occur. I would go though and check all those first.

Great question. I’m normal operation you’ll get small traces of EGR in the cooling system. But sometime to much will go into the system and show itself on that surge tank. I would have you EGR cooler checked for internal leakage. If it passes than change your surge tank and put new coolant.

My dd13 is quite different. Looks like I need to remove quite a bit to check inside the cooler for moisture. I want to remove the front cap of the cooler to see inside. The torx bit size needed must be an oddball size.. any idea the size bit needed?

What if it’s leaking externally. Mine has a small leak at the bottom of EGR cooler. Can it we wielded or go ahead get the whole part replaced? Thanks for your help.

Great question, if it’s leaking external than I would just know for sure nothing else is leaking on to it. There a few hoses or fittings that usually leak on it and could look like the cooler is leaking. If it’s just the cooler, than there are companies that clean or repair them. Since the cost Isn’t to bad for a new one I usually just get new instead of that route.

Thanks for reaching out. When it comes to batteries becoming weak I would start with checking connections and for excessive resistance such as corrosion. Those will cause you many issues. All the other tests would need a multimeter to start checking alternator voltage and excessive draws on the truck. It helps to be handy with electrical for these tests.

Please answer if the truck it’s deleted and this start failing can you cover the holes where the coolant come from? Please help it’s leaking a lot of coolant out of the end of the EGR the connects to the hot pipe on back. Thanks in advance I’m on road so need to know if that will fix my problem or if I can disconnect the hose from coolant reservoir that connect to the EGR again hope u can reply and thanks in advance.

If your truck has deleted EGR/aftertreatment than you can remove/block off that EGR cooler or lines. If it’s leaking plug it off as it’s not needed. They do make block of plates for all the ports of you do decide to remove the EGR components.

And Man U just save my ass thanks and do I need to drained the coolant? What I did was I notice once the coolant got low I bypass the sensor and it wasn’t leaking no more do you think coolant is low enough where I don’t need to drain it don’t have no where to drain it into. Great question yes there is. Although I’m a little confused on the back pressure in the reservoir as there should be a good amount of pressure 18psi ish. sometimes it’s too full and it has to find a way to leak out to the ground. If there’s fuel in the coolant then I would consider testing the injector cups. And if there’s no EGR gas or fuel in there I wouldn’t worry about anything contaminating it. Hope that helps some

A lot of times excessive cooling system pressure will be caused by your air compressor very common in older trucks or your head gasket failed more common in newer trucks.

@@kepasakolegi8871 if ur engine was cold and you had that much pressure built up. I’m starting to think your pressure relief coolant pressure ports in your coolant reservoir is plugged. That pressure should be going down through there. So if it’s plugged it’ll never escape.

Hey diesel Dr, can you give me some insight on why my dd13 Freightliner will show 1-2” below the minimum mark on the coolant, but it will also have a faint ring of coolant around where it needs to be inside the reservoir, and I don’t add anything but when I run it at idle for about 20 minutes and then shut it off and then check the reservoir my coolant level is back at the minimum. I’m not seeing any leaks on the ground. I have no clue what it would be because I’m not adding anything but it magically goes back up to normal when I run it.

Great question. In your surge tank there are extra pressure sections built in. Coolant will be kept on these sections and flow to the main area where the level is and cause the level to read correctly. I would fill coolant to max mark cold and not worry about it till you start loosing coolant. Great quest though and thanks for reaching out.

Did you the coolant has to be drained? I can't quite hear what you said right there. Also was it difficult getting the old part off after everything was loosened?

I drain the coolant from the block and that was good enough. Once everything is loosened the cooler is kind of stuck on there so I use a prybar to pry it away from the block. Some coolant will come out of the cooler but not to much.

If you keep loosing coolant I’d pressure check the system and check everywhere. Even on dash floor or sleeper floor. Those heater core like to leak. If there is nothing external at all it’s will be going in either the exhaust or the oil.

Hi bro great video question for you , since their is no sensor between engine and EGR cooler , just a thought build a hosing from engine to easily removable single def filter to EGR cooler ,that def filter will pick most of the soott and EGR and engine will run cleaner .and def filter can be easily removable and gets cleaned every 5 to 10 thousand miles with water and air , engine to def to EGR just an extra def filter thought?

Thanks for reaching man. I could Deff see where your coming from here. But you Gta remember cars, trucks and semi trucks all were made to recycle exhaust gas. These semi trucks take the EGR and use it to there advantage and great power out of it. The only downside to the entire system is the aftertreatment which as well all know always have some type of sensor issues. The engine itself runs great with a combined mixture of fresh air and recycled air which infact brings up the temps for combustion and create more power. So I believe they stayed away from an Eng side def filter because they used this current method to the engines benifit. Hopefully that doesn’t sound to confusing. But. To clear it up the Eng we made to run as powerful and as dirty as it can and it’ll just get cleaned later in the aftertreatment so there not worried about soot issues.

Great video quick question. I am abt to buy a truck 07 freightliner and the guys rebuild the engine but now the coolant is leaking from the hose by the resvoir any ideas could it be the egr valve

With a coolant leak they should be able to fix fairly quickly. Guessing where it’s coming from could lead us in so many directions so my best advise is take it to the ones who did the rebuild or a mechanic you trust to put the system under pressure and see where all the leaks are coming from. There might even be more we can’t see without being under pressure. Those are great year trucks and I hope it brings you no issues and lots of $$$ in return.

Great question. If your losing that much coolant and your certain there is nothing external. Than it will either be a leaking egr cooler back into your intake or a leaking head into your oil pan. Check your oil level and see if it’s to high.

Great question. Either something is cutting the hose causing it to leak or the clamps are crap, or clamps need better positioning on the pipe.

Hey buddy have an issue with 2018 Cascadia DD15 with Black spots at bottom of radiator reservoir. New 50/50 fluid, new reservoir and radiator installed because of crack on plastic radiator left upper corner. Ran 400 miles and those spots developed. I do remember seeing the old fluid with a darker red than usual but no sign of oil on top just brown sugar looking particles floating. Any help suggestions as to what it could be?

I have a question, I have a D13 Volvo engine! If I Eliminate the DEF system I don’t need EGR Cooler? Because I mine eliminated and my mecanic is saying that I need a new ERG Cooland because that one I have is pumping a little bit of water??? What does that truck do when the ERG is Pumping water???

Great question man. I’m actually a little confused myself. If the def system is eliminated than I’m assuming you have a custom tune to stop EGR system from being used. If that is infact the case than you can block off your EGR cooler just incase it starts to leak and pushes coolant into your intake like in this video. I think that may be what he means by pumping water. But save your money and find a block off for it, that would be the best bet.

Thanks for watching and reaching out. A diag computer will be needed for this troubleshooting. Basically you’d be checking sensors to see if there reading wrong. Than check for any intake or exh leaks. If that’s good it would take you to the turbo and run a few tests on it to see if it’s keeping up. A lot of the time I’m finding the turbo is the issue. Hope that helps some.

On a Dd13 the cooler comes in two models. One like this which will add about 3 hrs and one even bigger model that incorporates the egr coolant collector which needs the exh manifold to be removed. This one adds about 10 hrs. What a pain.

I would say replace it once a year. That’s long enough and under may be to soon. At a year mark is just right.

So far I'm losing about a gallon of coolant week (team truck) question is do you think I can go 4 more weeks without internal damage. Or have you ever seen cylinder wall damage or hydro lock do to a failed EGR cooler. And last question, how much coolant should I expect to come out of the EGR cooler if not draining the radiator. If I do it out on the road I plan on just putting a couple drain pans under the EGR cooler and catching what falls.

Just pulled the hot pipe off. Didn't see any coolant but saw some leaking around the reservoir cap. Gonna try the $15 fix before I try the $1500 fix. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for watching and great question. You know I can’t honestly recommend going any longer losing that much coolant. It is quite a bit. A failed cooler won’t cause hydro lock but if you start noticing your oil level rising due to coolant contamination than I’d stop running it right away. Than you’ll get locked up. When I do drain the system I drain it from the block so most of the cooler would be empty upon removal. When you do go to remove it maybe a 2 liters worth will come out. Not much. If you don’t drain the system than expect around 3 gallons to come out. Being the highest point shouldn’t be much more than that. Failed coolers usually lead to coolant just being burnt up in the intake but long term effects will definitely weaken the valve seats and cylinders. So sooner the better. @@anonymoustrucker1782 it ended up being the reservoir cap. Leaking and not holding the proper pressures. Just when I see coolant loss and it's not on the ground or not going in my oil pan my mind goes straight to worst case scenarios.

Well that would be very strange. That color would be oil getting into your exhaust unburnt. Shouldn’t happen with your heater , should be happening all the time.

Hello. I recently had to change my radiator at a rest area. I hitched a ride to a dealership bought the radiator and changed the radiator at the rest stop. Once completed I filled up the system with water intending to change it out with antifreeze once I got back home. This happened in Pennsylvania, well I went from Pennsylvania to Kentucky and now I am in Montana, twice while driving the low coolant warning comes on and each time the reservoir has been slightly below the low mark, in total I have had to put about a gallon of coolant into the system. No signs of outside leaks, could this be due to me just having water in the system and it just evaporating? Also, never had a coolant leak prior to this situation.

I Gta say damn. That took initiative doing it at a rest area. A radiator is no quick and easy job. If your reservoir keeps getting low than for sure your leaking somewhere. Either external or internal. A quick check for internal would be checking the EGR crossover pipe going to your intake. If it’s really wet you most likely found your answer. If not wet than something on the outside is not sealing. Usually those radiator hoses don’t seal well after so many miles once touched.

I was driving last night and my truck started stuttering made some metal noise when I hit the gas , had it towed in town , looked today that egr Venturi pipe has oil or coolant inside of it coolant tank is low , and I have a code 1636 FMI 2 . Any help would be great , checked the turbo also the ring around turbine by the air filter hose is rattling moving around the turbine is fine spins

Well couple of options. If there’s coolant in the pipe than your cooler gave out. If it’s fuel than your injectors are failing open. If it’s oil than get ready for a big bill, could be a head issue. Smart thinking just towing it, don’t want to hurt it worse.

@@bustedknucklebydieseldr3228 had it towed to freightliner they inspected the oil and it has coolant in it , they told me cylinder 1 is damaged and the crankshaft is damaged and also couple of bearings and both mains also damaged ,my psi for oil was right under the 60/or 70 psi I took it to freightliner a month ago and did the pick up tube for oil before it went out my brothers trucks engine just went like that so I wanted to prevented it happening to me and they also did bearings and mains and also a adjustment on top of the engine I was wondering is there any way they could of caused the damage with their work something they didn’t do right and now a month later this happens to me , also the egr went out also ,any help would be appreciated I’m trying to see see if they caused it at all

@@Wolfci man oh man I’m sry to her that. So it could just be bad luck and it’s time to give out. Or. They could of not primed the oil system after they did the oil suction manifold and that caused the bearings on the crank to prematurely wear out. That would be very hard to prove though but Atleast you have some knowledge to combat them with if you were to bring that up. With the the of the truck they will most likely just say it’s time.

@@Wolfci if cyl 1 was the failure than one of a few things could of happened with it. And I get that , but I don’t see why other bearings would of been affected unless something went wrong with install. You were smart and got them replaced as a precaution. I would Deff ask to speak with a shop mgr to open an investigation as you were being safe on ur part. The end result my be the tech that touched it last.

Pretty good question man. I would lean towards no because when the cooler leaks the coolant goes through the intake and gets burnt up with combustion and goes through to the exhaust. I bet there is a cold water leak somewhere, you would just need a pressure tester and let it sit. After some time it’s bound to show itself.

Labor is usually 4 hrs for just this repair. But an oil change is recommended and a cooling system flush would be a good time.

Great question. Both those answers work because with cold water leaks the engine can’t be running and with hot water leaks Eng has to be running so depending on which kind of leak you end up with. And then you Gotta be careful looking at it and making sure it’s not just condensation but actually coolant in there.

If you deleted your EGR system/DEF system then you can go ahead and block off the EGR cooler and go ahead and take it off because that’s just extra weight you don’t need.

Thanks for reaching out. If those would be the gaskets that go behind the cooler to the water manifold or collector than yes. I would recommend replacing them. They are forgiving but if you have many Miles than it’s best to change them out.

Great question,, yes. When the cooler leaks it usually leaks internally and goes through the intake and gets burned up in the cylinder. Anything that doesn’t get burnt up will go through the exhaust and to the dpf. Hope that helps.

I wouldn't mind you know if it only cost maybe 1,000 or two here and there but when you start getting 5 to $10,000 bills every couple weeks to couple of months plus the down time it gets kind of aggravating

@@dexterzacharie8668 thanks for watching. Any exhaust leak on the truck could cause the smell to get inside the cab. Especially at an idle where the vapors just go up. With this repair coolant was getting pushed into the intake. So the only thing you might notice is low coolant level, sweet smell in the exhaust , or smoke out the exh pipe. I would just start looking for soot signs on all the clamps.

All good man and thanks for reaching out. Sometimes they does occur and usually relates to a fuel issue. A lot of times I’ll find the fuel doser after the turbo plugged up and not delivering fuel to get temps up or the fuel shut off valve in the hydrocarbon doser block isn’t switching on. Both these should throw codes and lead you to part. When they don’t throw codes il run a low temp regen and watch the numbers. Usually will have a onebox sensor far off from the rest and there’s your problem. Hopefully one of these will be your answer.

@@cristoperodriguezgil8075 so I don’t believe I have any videos on it. Showing numbers and understanding them is very difficult to teach. If that’s the only code than it’s a bit strange it wouldn’t throw one for low temp or regen failed to get to temp. But either way looking at a log file of a regen would be best to figure out what’s going on. Those few options are most likely cause of failure but just as easy sensors go out all the time. @Busted knuckle by diesel dr I pulled the hot pipe and had trace amounts of coolant it looks like. Replaced the delta sensor and it fixed my problem of low power for now. Gonna delete it soon before it bankrupts me lol.

Man nice video bro.. hey quick question.. 2016 dd15 my antifreeze changed colors.. it’s very dark.. it’s not oil or fuel.. but I am seeing black floating particles in the antifreeze and my reservoir tank is dark.. is there any chance that I could be getting soot from my egr cooler into my antifreeze and reservoir tank? Or could that be radiator hoses breaking down from the inside!! Man any advice will help.. I’m taking a sample of the antifreeze to Detroit to see if I could get an analysis!! Thanks

Great question my man. This usually occurres when the EGR combustion gas is going into the coolant by means of the EGR cooler. Usually not a head issue but I would Deff take off the hot pipe going to the cold boost intake and see if it’s wet in there. If it is you found your problem.

Great question. Cust stated he was using coolant and no leaks were present. When that’s the case we always press test cooling system and see if any external leaks are present. After that we take a peek inside

Great question and thanks for watching. You should never have oil in that pipe. When failures occur it’s usually injectors with fuel in that pipe which could look like oil mixed with soot. Or coolant mixed with soot which could also look like very runny oil. If it’s infact oil then I’d be concerned with some type of head failure. Hope that helps. Good morning boss man, 2015 cascadia started to smoke bad it’s burning or leaking radiator fluid a little. Today check engine light came on smoking more than usual or may I say normal. Fluid is bubbling hot. Also it looses pressure driving and wants to cut off pull over because speed slows down makes me pull over. Cools down 10 to 15 min later turns back on, I assume it’s because coolant is cooled let’s me go about another 10 min driving before same thing occurs. I’m bummed just got the truck 744400 miles just got license as well can’t get on a roll at all. Any suggestions big bro?

Seems like something like air might be leaking because every time I turn off I have to re gain secondary tank air pressure back up. Primary air tank stays at 125psi. I’m heading to the mountains but scared to even keep heading there till I figure it out. I have port haul to smock pa. 42000lbs on time schedule am I looking at major fix?

@@ricosantana100 thanks for reaching out man. Sounds like you Deff need to take it in for service. The air leaks will only get worse and you will have a hard time maintaining you pressure after a while As for the smoking you may of got someone else’s problem and they better offer you some good will repairs to help you out. If there’s any type of coolant leaks on the Eng than they’ll be smoke from up front. If it’s smoking from your tail pipe than either coolant from your EGR cooler is getting past, burning oil pst your piston rings, or dpfs are contaminated and need inspecting. But it’s hard to say without digging in. Congrats on the new truck and license and I hope things turn around for the better.

Good question, a leaking EGR cooler will saturate the dpf filters and possibly contaminate them to the point of failure. For the most part they can be burnt out in a regen but in the even a regen fails than they would need to be replaced. As for the doc’s there shouldnt be an issue with smoking them out in a regen. But in rare cases yes it might cause docs to push out and not filter properly. Hope that helps.

If your missing this much oil and your sure it’s not on the out side of engine. I would suspect it’s going out your exhaust. So failed head or head gasket.

If your asking of the EGR cooler is a warranty job, it can be. Usuall extended warranty is 500 k miles for these engines.

@@Mertusa I know, just seeing if your paying attention. Last I got one it was around $700. Im sure it’s slightly higher now due to parts shortages.

Thanks for checking out my videos. Coolers don’t have a maintenance timeframe so only really replace them when they fail.

This would be an egr flow code and will set with an loss of egr pressure.I would check cac for cracks or loss of boost,egr boost leaks,failed egr sensors,or turbo issues..On eof these will lead you to your issue

Thank you for the reply so it wouldn’t have to do with the Delta Pressure sensor ? I change it out it hasn’t been calibrated since I don’t have the software. I do feel the truck sputter when I accelerate and the truck will lose power to kick in the gear.

@@RecioTransportInc. if your delta p sensor was reading incorrectly than this could affect it as well but if you replaced it and you know the ports in the pipe are clear than I wouldn’t lean towards this one.
