French carpenters craft off-grid hamlet of tiny dwellings

A few years ago, a group of carpenters (and friends) began building tiny homes on a property in southwest France using material from the woods, tools from the past (and present), and the freedom afforded by relying on their own labor.
Today the forested land looks straight out of a fairy tale. There's a tiny mud house with a living roof, a handcrafted caravan home perched above wagon wheels, a wood-heated bathtub (and a jacuzzi run off timber scraps), a bicycled-powered wood carving machine, an earthen bread/pizza oven, an underground wine and cheese cellar (AKA the "hobbit-ière"), experimental gardens and a chicken coop treehouse.
Menthé was one of the original homesteaders, who along with his friend Yogan (the landowner), built the original mud cabin for winter; they created large doors on both sides of the structure so their cars could be connected as heated bedrooms.
Now the property is peppered with tiny shelters and the independent carpenters (AKA copeauXcabana) are building themselves a workshop with hand-milled beams from the surrounding woods.

It is possible that some of you did not catch it, or the translation was not there but the young man mentioned all of them having jobs as carpenters and working on their land after hours and on days off. They aren't parasites or hobos. They are manuals. Hard, physical artisans on somebody's payroll. They live their passion for freedom and purity. And that's noble. Now many of us fear losing jobs, create a city style, inhale fumes all day, stress our lives away for a better paycheck. Did you see the peace on his face?

UPDATE: Apparently they are indeed young carpenters. However, this was not clear enough for me at least from the youtube video, but became more convincingly obvious from their blog: copeauxcabana.over-blog.com/tag/rencontre/ --- At what time does he mention that they are carpenters having jobs and working after hours and on days off? I checked the video after reading your comment, and at the beginning he mentions that "last winter" they had decided to build a clay cabin, when they were there "for work". And at the end of the video he states that he "used to work alone", (subtitled as 'along'), but that he now works with friends. To me he seems to suggest that at least he used to work (for a boss?), alone, but that now he is quite happy - I did see the peace on his face - to enjoy life without electricity, without a hot bath, (the bath tub "needed to be cleaned"), and without a hot shower, (shower under construction), and without hot water in his home. For those viewers who do not know how the French society works: one can perfectly live off state benefits without having to work, especially when one does not have to pay a rent, nor pay electricity bills, and who knows where they get their drink water from - if from a spring, they don't pay water tax either. So my thought is that they are enjoying life, good for them. My question all along the viewing of this video, and the question I have with every eco village is: how do they see the future, when they grow old and need medical care, or, more practically put: how will they climb the stairs to get into their fairy tale home, and get out at night, to go to the unlit toilet building, (the video did not show any sanitary building). Will a 70-year old Damien, or Nicolas, or Stéphanie, be equally enthusiastic to light the fire under the bath tub, climb up and take a bath in the open air, on a rainy day?

Hello, I gonna try to answer to your questions; I guess the first thing is there are young - and as Menthé said, they don't want "the normal life" - so they live in "the present time"... For example, first they made the bathtub, and now they're building showers, probably because the bathtub is funny, but not so practical? - and so on... The second thing is that they seems to be very adaptative, creative, they have the skills to build and fix things, and last but not least they are not alone... So if, later, they need or want more confort (like, for example, personal toilet - composting toilet, of course - or a "real" bedroom) I think they gonna make it, that's all! They have the room and they live "a bit out of the law". They don't need permit to enlarge the shelters, for example... or build another one :)

The more of these kinds of videos I watch the more I realize this is the sort of life I want but have always been told I couldn't have, and shouldn't want. Seems so simple... and isn't that a better avenue to happiness than material things? I think so.

@Marco Siebel 2016 Thank you for adding the other site the pic of them working on the Tiny Houses was great. That is what he did say he came to work and was still working is the way I take it. I do wonder about the later in life problems that do at times come. Because I deal with knee problems. One very big reason I would not be able to live in the hills with a Tiny House. But they do look like they enjoy there lives. So good for them.

Something I learned from some students doing like these guys did is that you can have hot water at all times by making compost piles on top of hoses of water, winding the hose in circles (Big and bigger as u need) and the temp of the compost gets too hot to touch even but mixed with the cold water they were able to shower each day (10 people) and wash dishes, all they needed hot water for in one day and every day by keeping the water filled hoses under the composting..pretty cool idea

+Ima Speck There are more and more each year. Working in a cubicle under florescent lights only to be taxed to death is becoming less and less appealing. Look up Mr. Chickadee on this channel. His house rivals these people. I have 43 acres that my wife and I are working on ourselves, though she still wants a big, traditional house. Except for a steel quonset hut I got on sale, all my out buildings were built by me with some friends helping, mostly using rough cut lumber from our place. A nice place to have horses and a few birds and a pig or two.

That's why I feel we should all learn about natural herbs and plant life. One day we won't have modern "cures" for sickness. I think something is going to happen fairly soon enough that we will be forced to leave our homes and be in nature. With that being said, I think we need to really study nature and it's patterns it provides for us. After all, it never hurts to be prepared.

First of all, I love all of the videos you put up Kirsten. You truly have a rewarding job and for you to share this information, I thank you. It fascinates me to see how other people live and how they construct. This particular video is very interesting to me. Making their own tools to build their own dwellings. This is the way to live. Why people buy expensive homes and have all of the newest gadgets is beyond me. Reverting back to a simpler time is what needs to be done. It seems to me that most have lost their roots. Our heads have swollen and we have gotten too big for our britches, so to speak. Comfortable but more modest living is a welcomed change. I truly believe less is more and makes a person happier overall. Thanks again for sharing dear friend.

To the trolls who think this is a waste of time, just keep watching youtube videos that you think are a waste of time, and then look up 'ironic'. to the trolls who think these guys are parasites, go eat your mcdonalds, suck the life out of the ground to produce your sweatshop made goods, then look up 'ironic'. to the commenter who wondered why the chickens were so high up, chickens are domesticated from red junglefowl, who live in the trees to avoid predators, this is more normal than a big dark shed!
