I picked up one of these for $21.50 shipped to my door. It looks like it will be perfect with the Coughlans folding stove.

I've used the Coghlan's folding stoves for backpacking since the 80's- I think they are the cheapest, lightest, cleanest, easiest way to boil up while you're hiking. For a mess kit I usually use a stainless steel chinese lunchbox, just big enough to boil about a quart of water.

They really work pretty well and are not expensive at all. A much overlooked item...

The French and the Serbian/Yugo kits are my "go to" kits. They're rectangular, so they pack well, and they're versatile. The Serb/Yugo kit has the advantage of the canteen and cup. But I find I take the French kit with me more.

Have you seen the Trangia ones? Come in two sizes? The Japanese use them to cook rice in. Several armies used this style kit during WW2.

I like the Czech mess kit also but the French kit fits in my light rig better. I am reserving the Czech kit for my medium ALICE pack.

You got a rare one there. I've tried finding the 1984 vintage one with the D ring and can NOT find it. I've googled it and checked other websites and can't find it. mega bummer. Looks like you could put some serious stuff in that kit. Stove, holder, bit of food all in one. Nice find!

The number of penny stoves that have exploded and injured the user is frightening. Nothing about them is safe. Nothing about any homemade stove is safe, but the penny stove is the worst of the bunch. Turn the Coughlan's stove on its side, and it closes right around a Trangia alcohol burner. or an Esbit, of course. A pan sits on top easily, and you're a whole lot safer.

I agree, I hate the penny stoves and have since thrown this one away. You can use the Coughlan's with a number of different heat sources...

Yes hard to find. Only place I found in stock was Suplus place in France. Ordered 2 ... the shipping to USA basically doubled the cost of the kit. Roughly €40 shipped for 2 kits. www.stock-americain.com/en/mess-tin-3-aluminum-plates-french-army Good luck!

That same French mess kit doubles for a survival kit. If you've ever looked at the SAS survival literature, you'll see they recommend the same type of cooking container with pouch to store all your necessities in. But this way.. you have a serving bowl and two pots. I was curious, did it come with a pouch? There are few current MOLLE systems where this item will also slip into nicely. Thanks for the vid.

It could be a great survival kit. It did not come with the pouch but it fits perfectly in the ALICE radio pouch or the 200 round small arms pouch. I think there are a few MOLLE pouches that would be perfect for it also.
